The Bulwark

Күн бұрын

Sam Stein and Will Saletan discuss the third day of the Democratic National Convention, which ended in a dynamic, emotional speech from Tim Walz. His family stole the show and tugged on all of our heart strings.
Plus, it looks like RFK Jr. is dropping out of the presidential race. What does this mean for Kamala Harris and Donald Trump?

He's great, I certainly like him, I do worry we might be getting ahead of ourselves with all the enthusiasm. I hate the term "cautiously Optimistic" but that's what I'm leaning into these days. Vibes don't win elections, votes do, and we've got a lot of crackpot voters thanks to our SM landscape now.

I think there is good reason for optimism. I think there are a lot of progressives who would not have been very enthusiastic about a Harris-Shapiro ticket, but who are going to turn out to vote just to see Tim Walz (hopefully) given some real power.

I lost my dad to complications from Covid two years ago. That scene where Tim's son stood up, pointed, and shouted "That's my dad!" really hit me hard. If your dad is still with you, call him tonight and just say "I'm proud of you dad". You never know how much time you have.

What else do we pay taxes for? So the people we elect to represent us can spend it where it is most needed. Jasmine Crocket, in response to someone criticizing Democrats for spending the people's money, said something to the effect of, "That's our job! That's ALL we do." Criticizing someone for doing their job - trying to find the best way to spend the money they are given to spend? Why?

My mom was a nurse and had to work 12-14 hr shifts to make money to pay bills. She did EVERYTHING for me and my brother. Tim Walz is the dad i wish mine would have been. When i look at the candidates... it's a choice between someone like my conman father or my champion mother.

My father-in-law, God-rest-his-soul, was a virile man's man . . . who also cried not infrequently when he was passionate about, or deeply touched by something. It was actually an endearing trait that softened him and validated his integrity. Anyone who rips a young man or family or VP candidate for showing tears in an incredibly powerful personal and family moment . . . I'm sorry, but, y'all need to see a counselor, and get a clue on what true manhood is.

But the message , and perhaps the lesson of this campaign, is to make Trump small - not big, Ineffective - not a threat, Impotent - not virile, a mere annoyance - not a strongman. That will drive him crazy and make him seem weak which is opposite to what he is trying to project to voters.

and honestly, I think the real issue is that it's rarely talked about AND then taken seriously by those who cover it being said. It it was talked about seriously in the main stream of right sided discourse, and the WH talked a lot about it, I'd totally agree with their point here. But I think the inverse is true, so I agree fully with you.

Many of us appreciated hearing from Bill Clinton. He quoted the 50 million jobs that Dem admits have created compared to just 1 million by GOP leadership. I left the Democratic Party several years ago over frustrations about how they were campaigning, the poor messaging, their seeming elitism and disconnect with working class America. I consistently voted Dem for the top of the ticket but was registered unaffiliated and considered myself an Independent. When the Harris campaign kicked off something broke open in my stony heart and I came home with such a fervor it astounded me. I changed my affiliation back to Democrat and have been all in. Watching the convention it hit me that what I am a “Born Again Dem” and this DNC has been my tent revival.

I am hopeful and feel this moment and in my heart and logically I just know Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are the right people for the job, but my level of joy really ebbs and flows because in this area of the country the mood is sour and being a liberal Democrat in this environment, I kind of get the point, even though I am using the rallys and the DNC to keep my hopes up and feel the joy.

We need regulation and taxation more than ever. People don’t like those words but they’re sure gonna like fair wages, affordable housing, honest food, and good educational opportunities - not scams. If the republicans fail to steal this election, we’re going far left and I don’t think the Overton window will move back to the extreme right for the rest of my life.

I’m glad it’s not just me. This discussion was hit or miss for me; so much so that I subbed then unsubbed then unsubscribed within the discussion! I will need to watch a few more Bulwark vids before I decide whether to subscribe. Tired of Jan6? As if how tired you are about it is relevant! Trump and his inner circle need to be prosecuted for this! As for the “coach fetish” comment, that was out of line. Just because you don’t understand something doesn’t mean it’s unimportant. I have never been interested in spirts - playing or watching - yet I understand how important a good coach is. You almost hit on it when you mentioned teachers - coaching is a form of teaching, but it’s also more. A coach can be a cross between a teacher and a drill sergeant. If Parents put a great deal of trust in a sports coach. There’s the obvious: they have to trust the coach knows how to teach the sport so the child won’t be disappointed and will enjoy the sport. They also need to believe their child won’t be needlessly hurt because of training or when playing. This is especially important if the child wants to play professionally. If there are games that require travel, they need to trust nothing dangerous or “untoward” happens in addition to their child making it home safely. This isn’t even touching on how much the public adores sports. I believe the main point is that it is a point of connection and camaraderie bridging the POTUS and VPOTUS with their constituents, especially the younger generations.

As a father of a 24-year-old son who is on the spectrum, the Gus stuff not only got me all emotional at the time, but also again this morning hearing you guys talk about it. I'm a lifelong Democrat, and after seeing Shapiro's speak last night, I'm so thankful that she did not choose him. We do not need a bargain bin Obama at this point. We need somebody who will develop that permission structure for people, especially men, who may have voted for Trump once or twice to see how it's okay to vote for the other side this time around. I think Tim Walz does that beautifully and effectively. I also think the coach moniker is significant because it shows service and dedication to something greater than the individual, something Trump and his family could never in a million years represent. Thank you all, and everyone at the bulwark, for what you do. A lot of us on the left appreciate you, and long for the day of normalcy and respectful political discourse.

From someone who was a coach for years, being called coach is the uktimate form of respect. My kids now have kids and when we meet now and they call me coach, it reminds me that I touched lives in a good way. I made a difference. They gave me way more than i gave them and that lives on forever. It says a LOT about the man. They are reaching the younger generation and it’s what we need! It’s time to pass the torch and thank God for coaches like Walz for giving many a solid foundation!

When you teach others, especially kids, something you love and you teach in a way that even the least talented kids feels good about themselves, it is the greatest complement to years later be honored in such a way that they as adults, show their respect and love. It is the best feeling that you impacted their lives positively in even small ways. Everyone who has a hobby or even a craft that they excel in should consider, if possible, teaching a class at the local library or night classes at a local school. It is a good thing to add to your bucket list.

I don't mind the "coach" line. Coaching a group of teenagers requires time, patience, and selflessness that most of us aren't willing to give to other people's children! As a parent to four teenage boys, Coach WALZ has my vote!🇺🇲💙🇺🇲💙🇺🇲💙🇺🇲💙

The DNC was exactly what we (Americans) needed. You are perhaps, being over-analytical about the individual performances. Hope, Joy, Energize. That’s what we got from it.

Exactly! I am feeling a blue wave building but we must all do something to build it for the next 75 days!

I find Walz to be one of, if not the most authentic person in politics. I didnt see him as appropriating "republican" symbolism because its been who he is his whole life. As an Independent i find it refreshing that he has the ability to reach across the aisle. Its what i wish for every election or governing session and the compromise and understanding just didnt feel like it was ever going to be possible again.

Ann Coulter tweeted a pic of Gus Walz and said "Talk about weird" this is the Republicans in a nutshell.

Don't know who she is, but she must have very poor connection to her family. Love and light to that poor person

I knew it would happen. The so called party of family values is morally bankrupt.

Bill Clinton wasnt bad. I still was able to listen to the whole thing. Give him some credit, he is old, it's one of his last speeches. What's been great at the convention is there has been someone to speak to everyone- you dont have to love every speaker, but they are all decent and all have their importance in the overall picture.

isn't it depressing and horrifying that people saw Gus and thought his emotional outpouring was embarrassing and shameful?
