His show was great for hip hop in the 90s, it actually played some dope music, I must have listened to it nearly every weekend for a few years straight. Crazy that he's 63 years old and still active in the hip hop scene.

Nobody who chooses to focus on how westwood presents himself will ever know, understand or appreciate what the guy has done. He pretty much stands alone on this side of the Atlantic and is deeper in rap culture than most from UK ever could hope to be. He was right there in the golden era and the whole 90s/east coast/west coast thing and was broadcasting it back to us in the UK while being tight and drinking and partying with legends and hall of famers and getting them all on his show. What he did is so much more important than how he talks, the guy is so legit he doesn't even care if you know it.
@Wally-H
@Wally-H 2 жыл бұрын
"he doesn't even care if you know it." Man, you cannot be serious. He has spent decades convincing generations of hip hop fans that he single-handedly brought hip hop to the UK. The man has an ego the size of a planet and has bullshitted his way to this so-called legendary status. Only the fans from my generation know the truth. Westwood is a faker of epic proportions.
@KillerDiaguR
@KillerDiaguR 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wally-H what is your generation? He is more like a legit guy wrapped up in a faker wrapped up in a wannabe legit guy. He was right there in the 90s when it was all going off. You can't replace that kind of experience. Only the actual rappers, producers and industry players have one up on this guy. I'm not even saying I like him, he's a very questionable dude, but he has earned his credentials imo and I was born in 83 and was listening to rap and hip-hop all through the 90s and stopped in the early 00s when it started to tank/I grew up. He didn't just have big names he had real underground heads too who ppl in the UK back before the Internet never would have been exposed to, and like I said they would be on his show chilling, taking, drinking with him etc. Guy was very legit in his own way
@Wally-H
@Wally-H 2 жыл бұрын
@@KillerDiaguR I'm talking 80's bro, not 90's. I am 55 years old and I got into hip hop around '85. Westwood was barely on my radar. The brilliant Mike Allen hip hop show, plus the Hip Hop Electro series of albums, got me into it, then I listened to Dave Pearce's Fresh Start to the Week, which was Radio One's first hip hop show and aired on a Monday night in the late 80's. Westwood was around, sure, and he was known but far from the God he makes himself out to be, and people think he was. In the 90's he became the most important hip hop DJ in Britain, that is certainly true but I'm fed up with him making out he started it all, like he was some sort of one-man Rambo character, bringing hip hop to the masses for the first time through his pirate station work. It is all bullshit.
@KillerDiaguR
@KillerDiaguR 2 жыл бұрын
@@Wally-H yeh I'm not saying he's the hip hop emperor, just that he did put a lot of legitimate work into the scene in his own way, and a lot of ppl can't see past the exterior and see it, that's all. I'll never forget having the Westwood rap show blaring on my old Sony tape deck radio in 1997 and him and OC were chatting about OC's new album and Westwood dropped "my world" and the second I heard it I was like WTF is this!?! Ran straight over to press record on whatever tape was in there and got like half a track with the beginning missing 🤣 but I'll never forget it. He used to broadcast live from parties where he was drinking with the wu tang clan and stuff like this. In the 90s. That's pretty fkn legit. But anyway. I agree he's not the rap messiah, and can come across as (and in all fairness probably is) a bellend, but yeh, he's put in some legit work is alls I'm saying :)
