Good to see I am doing the right thing. My mare objects at first when I put water on her but I just went ahead and did it anyways and she quieted and enjoyed it. Especially during our recent heat wave and they were drenched in sweat just standing around. It had to feel good.

I just bathed my horse but he seems so tense High headed and keeps his head high and sometimes moves side to side… how should I help him relax more to this? When I kept the constant pressure on him it seems he won’t settle down escalates what should I do?

Don't stop the water until he relaxes. Grab a chair and a 6 pack and wait. Work him first and get him good and hot and tired. I can put a sprinkler in my pasture and they will go stand in it.

Hello Tim how do I get on and off a horse with spurs? I'm afraid I will spur him on accident and take off or start bucking.

If you are getting on and off correctly the spur shouldn't be close to the horse. Think about where your heels are the next time you ride.

Hmm… I’m no horse expert, but…. is that cold water? FWIW, I have a similar “startle” reaction when sprayed with cold water - even if I’m expecting it and/or I’m the one doing the spraying. Although I’m sure confidence, uncertainty, and leadership are part of the equation; I’m wondering how much of a factor reflex is here? 🤔

It's 100 degrees, there is no cold water. Lol. Reflex maybe the first time but not after that. Either way the point of the training is to discourage undesired behavior and encourage desired behavior so spook or reflex, reason doesn't matter.

@@timandersonhorsetraining I guess I’m a little bit spoiled having a 400 foot deep well (yeah - when they built this place back in the ‘80s they had to go that far to hit water, as we’re on a 1200 foot hill here) so it’s always cold coming out of the ground, even when it’s 110+ during a heatwave. 🥵 Well - I’m certainly not suggesting that training is a bad idea or disagreeing with your methodology (as mentioned, I’m no horse expert 😉) …but… FWIW, a reflex can’t be trained out because it’s a “hardwired” phenomenon that occurs well before the impulse gets to the conscious & cognitive parts of the brain… so, it’ll always be there, just as your leg is always going to twitch when somebody (usually your doctor) taps on your knee with that little rubber hammer (unless, of course, you have something wrong with your peripheral nerves or brain stem - which, of course, is what your doctor is checking for). However, training and repetition with proper feedback would - generally speaking for most animals, so I would tend to think horses also - keep that unavoidable startle from progressing into a larger reaction or even a full blown panic, and for something as large and powerful as a horse that’s pretty important. 🙂
