In salsa music the timbalero often gives the cue to go from one part to the next part. There are of course lots of possibilities to do this. In this tutorial I give some examples.

Excellent video! If you can, please, could you do a lesson dealing with the proper technique for timbale abanicos? (paradiddles, etc.) I am learning how to play timbales and I have not seen ANYONE explain techniques as extensively and as patiently as you do, Michael. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent!

You are right, normally your left hand is on the hembra. The reason I play the clave is to show that it is a 2/3 clave and where the transitions are in the clave. For the explanation it is good to know how it fits in the clave. But normally the transitions are on the same place but the left hand is on the hembra.

Well, both ways are valid. I think playing the rimshot on the three is done a lot in cha-cha-cha and also slower tempi. Playing it on the two-and is not a modern cuban way. It is done a lot in latin-jazz, salsa ect. So you can use both ways.

Question: I thought normally the timbalero would only play clave with the cascara during the verse and during the coro & mambo when he plays the mambo bell pattern he would play notes with his free hand on the hembra. Yet you play the clave with the mambo bell pattern. Am I right? And is there any special reason for you playing it differently?
@Unitysam
@Unitysam 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael thanks for the video! I have been taught by various people (all latin percussionists from USA) to play the rim shot before the abanico on the third beat of the three side bar of the clave rather than the two-and. I read in changuito's book to do it the same way you taught so i was wondering is this a fairly modern cuban variation? are both ways valid?
@branmar
@branmar 2 жыл бұрын
Read those books again a bit more carefully. When playing in 3-2 clave, the rim shot is played on the third beat (of the TWO side) and then the abanico is played on the fourth beat. When playing in 2-3 clave, the rim shot is played on the and of 2 (of the THREE side) and then the abanico is played on the fourth beat. An easy way to remember this is to think about the logic of the clave. The two side of the clave has its most important hits on the downbeats. The three side of the clave has its most important hits on the upbeats. Think about the piano guajeo. On the two side of the clave the piano plays primarily on the downbeats. On the three side of the clave the piano plays primarily on the upbeats. Even though you are a drummer in order to understand the music as a whole it is essential that you understand the piano guajeo. So if you are playing in 2-3 clave, your transition happens in the three side of the clave. The three side is where the piano guajeo plays primarily upbeats; and so your rimshot before the abanico will happen on the and of 2 (an upbeat). If you are playing in 3-2 clave, then your transition happens in the two side of the clave. The two side is where the piano guajeo plays primarily on the downbeats; and so your rimshot before the abanico will happen right on that third downbeat. I hope that this clears up any confusion, and gives you an easy way to remember.
