Former ab/bosun. Love you content on both channels back in my day pilots always gave helm commands as port or starboard and the degrees required I sailed under Singapore flag on routes in Caribbean. Sth & Central America the reason for not using right and left was explained to me by a Chilean pilot. The term all right for a British person means Ok so if given as a helm command it would no be acted upon

👍✅ Makes perfect sense in international settings, just as pilots on international flights normally don't say "to" as in descend to 5000 as it can be confused with the number 2 i.e. 25000

Tim, with the expanse of the British Empire at it's height the language spread around the world. Add the political decision post WWII that US English will be the language for International trade, communications and politics in recognition of the American contribution to the Allied Victory in WWII, that you can go anywhere and be able to communicate in English is intentional. Those people who do not need to communicate internationally most likely still learn English because of the agreement to use it for communications.

Your comment regarding English being the common language internationally, reminds me: When i was working the north Gulf of MX including ports adjacent to the Miss delta, I would frequently have to ask a local crew member to interpret vhf transmissions of Cajun accented english coupled with the southern accent. 😮😅
@TimBatSea
@TimBatSea 10 ай бұрын
😂😂😂😂😂 You are not alone in that. It took me working for this company almost 10 years to start to understand the Mid-Atlantic drawl, and Cajun can be even harder to understand. CUOTO
@martijnm4905
@martijnm4905 10 ай бұрын
After years sailing worldwide , I assure you, the Cajun accent is nothing 😉 I ve come about some memorable ways to mishandle the English language: Try this... Helms order from a Chinese inland pilot "Yellow Yellow Yellow" 😵‍💫😖and that in the middle of the night on a river without any light and no chart we knew off and plenty unlit barges. Eventually we manage to make "Zero Zero Zero" out of it (the Chinese pronounce the "R" as "L"). Or this pilot in a remote small port in Estonia.. as there was no BA chart existing of the place, he brought his own Russian one. It looked like quite a long buoyed channel on paper. With the pilot's only English at each pair of buoys that was "Red to port, green to starboard" (Note: in Europe, it's inbound red on portside, as in opposite to America where it is green inbound on portside). This worked till we got to berth and plenty shallow water around. Then he uttered something without any warning and speed reduction that was to mean that we had arrived at our destination... Two days later, when outbound with the same pilot, we put him on the bridge wing and closed the door while he was like a parrot "Green to port Red to starboard" Not to forget: the Philippine sailors that always pronounce the F (or ph) as a P, there is also the odd one that pronounce the P as a F. It gives this... "chiep, chiep, I want to go ashore for a telepone call, it is very cheaf here"😂😂😂😂.
