Nice one captan, It’s great to see a true boater at work. Typically quiet and no fuss from a skilled mariner. “Sail the boat and not the chart” my old skipper always said. Now I’m a retired airline captains , The adage still stands ‘ 1 Aviate 2 Navigate 3 Comunicate. In that order. It’s plain to see that in operation. You give me the chance to see the working life I once nearly followed. Keep it up Dave (UK)

Hey Tim, just wanted to pop in and tell you how much we enjoy your videos. Really liked the narrated ones where you talk about points of interest along the way. We live in a tiny seaside town on the west coast of BC, Canada and watch the tugs bring barges and log booms by our place all the time. Mostly towing behind, but not always. The benefit of the narrated videos is the ability to understand the dialog without having it buried by the ambietn sound - that said though, the ambient sound is good to have. Thanks for doing what you do and opening your world up to those of us who have an interest, but would never otherwiase see it. Cheers!

Sailing past my soon to be alma mata - Marist College in Poughkeepsie NY located adjacent to the Midhudson Bridge. I found out about this college from my dad from one of his journeys as a Merchant Marine, taking the same route, many years ago. A shipmate told him "about a small college in Poughkeepsie NY right beside the Hudson". This video is very special to me and will remain so for the rest of my life. My dad passed away many years ago & won't be there to see me graduate. He was a poor kid from "the north end of the east bay (Warren RI).My dream on graduation day was to see a tug or a bulk carrier going southbound when I was given my degree. You made this dream a reality just 8 weeks before graduation through this channel. This brought me to tears, especially when you were Brooklyn bound. My grandpa was a stevedore along the waterfront. The next time you're sailing down the Hudson, and you see someone waving from the shore with an English bulldog, it's me waving thank you and be safe. Again, many thanks to you. Rainy McG.

Some interesting notes about the bridges on this trip, the northern bridge at Poughkeepsie is a former rail bridge built in 1889, since converted into a walk and bike path called Walkway Over The Hudson. The Bear Mountain Bridge you might notice, is only a suspension bridge for the section between the towers, there are no suspension cables supporting the sections between the tower and shore.

Thanks for the video...it brought back memories from my tour on the USCGC Sturgeon Bay, out of Bayonne, NJ, 2002-2004, breaking ice up the Hudson. We berthed for many a nights at the Kingston fuel dock. I usually relieved the morning watch before getting u/w so he could grab chow. Occasionally, I'd hear some tug Captains calling on the VHF to say they're fast in the ice, and just rode out the night, so I'd call back and get their location and tell them we'd be down to bust them out soon! It was always neat to feel that big Fairbanks Morse "hooked up" and crushing through the ice close aboard and wake them loose. Fair winds! Doug USCG Ret.

As a Brit l have just found your channel. Great stuff, including your cool choice of music. Fascinating to see a tug at work, especially when you are in push mode, have not seen it in the UK even though l spend a lot of time on duty in Portsmouth harbour. We have about 7 or 8 tugs but they are used to assist warships (yes, we still have a few) entering or leaving harbour. Some commercial traffic is assisted. In high winds the commercial traffic has mandatory assistance. The entrance to the harbour is only about 250 yards wide and the tidal race pretty viscous. Keep the videos coming, l learn something on each one and the views are spectacular!

The fact that pax trains run on the east side of the Hudson and freight runs on the west side is due to competition between the NY Central and the Pennsylvania Railroad, which paralleled each other's routes, each to steal traffic from the other. The Government made them stop that practice, but the bonus remained: CSX and AMTRAK have exclusive routes northbound from the NY Metro Region.

Interesting video Tim. When I go to Manhattan I enjoy entering via the Hudson River Parkway. Beautiful views. Also last Summer I watched a sailing video of a boat going from Manhattan all the way to Montreal on the Hudson and via Lake Champlain. Never knew it could be done without going thru the Erie Canal. Love this stuff. :)

I missed this one😱🤭 a few days ago... Kingston, wow a good trip for you. I have flown into Newburg 8:48. more times than I care for, I got stuck with that run out of Dayton to SWF in the late 80’sFor EMERY Air Freight a lot 😎👍✅ The Aircraft Carrier Intrepid (along with the Wasp) was at my base in the late 60’s, Quonset Point RI. PS, can do Without that Mu’Zack...!!

I used to do a lot of trucking down that way. Glad to see the new Tappan Zee Bridge got built. I'm sure you enjoy the new Goethals Bridge as well let alone the raising the Bayonne Bridge. As far as monetizing I recommend Sailing Uma as they are the Gold Standard in how to do a KZbin Channel. They are pure play whereas you have an employer so I can see the conflict tho of course too. Very much appreciate your courage in even trying this in the first place! Big Tractor Power is another pure play KZbin and maybe more like what you're trying to get at but it's all what you make of course too. Look forward to recommending your channel as such and stay safe.

Good morning Tim , thank you for the video! You get a good view of the New York skyline. When you get time could you please show us around the barge , just curious about the different buildings/ structures etc. Anyway Take Care Tim and crew and safe sailing!! 👍😎🇬🇧.

Good morning Wayne. I am working on trying to find a way to do that. There are a few security and liability concerns that are preventing me from shooting on a barge, but I'm sure we will come up with a work around.

This was fun Tom. I went to college in New Paltz, on the west side of the Hudson across from Poughkeepsie. I wanted to note that at 5:40 you were just about at the home of President Franklin Roosevelt at Hyde Park and their neighbors, the Vanderbilt's massive mansion, which I think you can see in your vid. Really enjoying your channel. Keep'em coming.

@@TimBatSea Yep, just after that little island down from Kingston, look up the hill on the left (eastern shore) and you should be able to see a massive home (Vanderbuilt's) and then next property to the south of that is Roosevelts home.

The Railroad tracks on the west Bank of the Hudson is called the River Line it runs from Selkirk Yard just south of Albany to New York. The line was built by the New York & West Shore Railroad a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad to compete with the New York Central. The NYC took the line in a merger in the early 20's and the line passed on from the New York Central to Penn Central in 1968 then to Conrail in 1976 and then CSX in 1997. The tracks on the east side were part of the New York New Haven & Hartford Railroad the line was folded into Penn Central in 1968 and offered up to Metro North commuter and Amtrak after Conrail pulled out of commuter operations in early 1976.

Hey Capt, just started watching your videos. I think I've watched them all. Very relaxing to watch. I enjoy watching your boat handling skills. I'm working over on the Comfort! Thanks for the shout out (I know you meant Comfort!). I keep a sharp eye out for you on AIS. Keep up the good work. Stay safe out there.

Victor! First!!! A big big thank you for your service not just to our country, but to all mankind! Thank you for watching. I felt so stupid when the first comments came in saying I said Mercy and not Comfort. I also had hoped that we would be the ones Bunkering you guys, but I see a different company has left a stand by bunker barge along side, so I guess I won't get that close to you. Thank you again for fighting the good fight! Be safe and stay healthy!

I was born in the Bronx, and moved to Texas when I was eleven. I've always been fascinated by tugs and towboats, and could never figure out why, but you really can't live in the City without being aware of New York harbor and all the comings and goings of shipping in the harbor, at least I couldn't. Every time I went over the bridges I had my eyes peeled looking for the tugs. Down here in Houston, you don't see many "traditional" tugs unless you go the the Port of Houston itself. Most of what you see are towboats pushing barges up and down the ICW, or the "Ditch," as some call it. Enjoyed the video, and subscribed. Be safe, both on the water and at home.
