Tell me about it! I've had the incra for about 15 years I think, it was great when I first started using it. Now it gathers dust, the novelty wore off and I prefer cutting dovetails by hand instead. Especially with the flexibility it gives me with spacing, working in metric, various timber thicknesses etc. Way too much thinking involved to get the Incra set up in my opinion, and the timber has to be EXACT thickness or you will be chasing your tail for hours. Woodworking should be relaxing.

Great vid. I notice in the Incra manual they suggest 3/8" material for the sides and 3/4' for the accents as you alluded to. Why couldn't I just use 3/4" everywhere?

I think the main reason is _probably_ aesthetics, for a smaller box that you can pick up and move around 3/4' is pretty thick and might look a little clunky. You'd have to change the depth of cut as well, which means your fingers would be taller/longer and skinnier on the thicker workpiece. Wouldn't be a major issue I don't think, but you'd probably want to do some test cuts beforehand to see how it comes out. 👍

Fabulous box, way outside my equipment and ability level. Imagine having three teenagers with zero interest in woodwork! I did it briefly in high school but chose metalwork because of the dust in the woodworking workshops. Played around with wood when my job and lifestyle allowed, mainly making hifi speakers. I'd love to have a speaker box with these joins!

Was there some kind of cutting error on the dark side? The light side looks excellent with dark border contrast but dark side looks thin and not as uniform of contrast. You must have noticed cause u do a good job of quickly flipping to good ends while showing final product, wondering if the 2nd box came out better or if that's why u didn't assemble and show due to ur "tight deadline"? Not trying to tear u down i know ur highly skilled and enjoy ur videos it just didn't look right compared to the video i watched from another guy right before that looked much cleaner. Were the cuts slightly proud of the board thickness perhaps?

Hi Derek, it was a while ago to be honest, but no issues that I can remember from this one. The inlay section has face grain and edge grain that shows, and the face grain definitely pops 100% better than the edge grain does, so perhaps that is making it look a little off? There actually is a technique to cut these so that you have face & side grain showing for the inlays, (essentially you cut the grooves _across_ the grain, instead of with), but I've not tried that one yet. 👍

@@michaelsheehan4121 The Incra itself comes in Metric and Imperial versions, I have the Metric version from Timbecon. When you follow Incra's instructions in their guidebooks, they use metric for cuts but tend to still refer to board thicknesses and a couple other incidental measurements in imperial. It's trivial for you to actually work in metric everywhere, but it would have added an extra explanation (ie, more of me talking lol) in the video, making it longer for little benefit. Don't let that put you off, very enjoyable tool once you know what you're doing. 👍
