Composite decking has got a lot better not so cheap plastic looking anymore. Living in Oz now I build a lot of decks both at ground level and high up. My timber boarded decks I still tend to stainless screw but my composite ones I use a secret fixing system. There are several on the market but all rely on using polymer adhesive to stop the walking boards you mention. The expansion and contraction is the biggest thing as you say. In our heat I have seen 5mm gaps close up and then return as they cool. Not bad stuff to work with but boy it blunts your saws.
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. Down in Aus though I bet the decking gets subjected to some extreme temperatures, and I can easily believe that a length of composite decking could grow in the heat as much as you say🥵 The adhesive sounds like a great solution to the walking/creeping issue👍Great, informative comment mate, and thanks for watching😎(it's so cool that the internet/KZbin allows you to watch my videos all way from Australia 🇦🇺👍).
@davetaylor47413 жыл бұрын
@@thetallcarpenter Often laying the boards in the heat is as big a problem. You can't touch the boards without gloves and I have had cordless tool batteries plastic weld themselves on as they lay on the deck. Had to cut them off to remove them. High 40's C will do that.

Pop the last perimeter board on with no measuring. Also tend to use ecodek. It's £££ but they custom.cut your boards upto 6m (maximum length on truck). No joints on most decks. Nice infill. As always Del, a great video. About 3 months ago I decided to cover a 30 square metre area in our garden with decking and we went for the composite type. As you say the composite boards worked out to be nearly 5 times more expensive than timber boards. The composite boards came with clips and screws, so the clips gave us the spacing between each board. The boards went down great, but now and again some of the clips (plastic) snapped, but the finished deck looks fantastic. As you say very low maintenance, if any, I was surprised how quickly the composite decking dried after the rain stops.
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын

Looking nice! The first time I did a composite deck it was very long and narrow and I automatically laid it with end to end joints but was surprised by how much the joint opened and closed as the temperature varied. Since then I've always tried to break it in to squares and rectangles using one length, or half length, of board. In your case, a square where it's undercover and a rectangle on the open part with a "perimeter" board through the centre. Gets over any expansion gaps. Takes some planning out though to, as much as possible, use roughly full and half lengths.
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard. I know exactly what you're saying, and your method of laying in smaller panels superbly gets over the movement issue. Another top notch job my friend. I was wondering if you know the fire rating of the boards and how they perform in the wet. The reason I ask is because I'm a building manager of a block of apartments and the external walkways on some of the floors have wooden decking down. We have to take this up and replace with some other product because the local Fire Brigade don't like the existing decking. Also wooden decking becomes like an ice rink when it's wet so I'm conscious of that fact too. Great job though, looks awesome 👍

Hi Ian. I'll find out from my bro what the tape was. I know it wasn't cheap😬 Thanks for watching and I'll post back here when I get the name of the tape👍 Cheers

Why did you not put an anti weed membrane under the joists ?
@thetallcarpenter3 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry. Most of the ground was covered with stone over a membrane and I think it is fairly unlikely that there will be enough light getting through the deck to the rest of the ground for anything to grow.👍 Cheers
