There's little I could add to many of the excellent comments, save that Dewey speaks volumes....and not by barking. It says a huge amount about the company and the work environment when there's a well-behaved and happy dog being part of the team. Give him a hug from me!

I'd love to see a video about the different foundations and the situations in which you would use certain foundations for timber frame builds. I see allot of concrete pads but no explanation of what's beneath. And are concrete post feet acceptable? I've done a lot of research and the opinions on this are so differential that it's overwhelming.

I wouldn't close off a single thing if I built one of these homes. Maybe the bathrooms. I might close off a bathroom. Or, even better, build a timber frame outhouse and connect it to the house via the zipline for the winter months.

Have you planned/built any earth bag, timber frame, sip hybrids? Keep up the good work! I love those cheeks, they really expand the volumetric experience of the space 😂 👍😎 STOC

Great job, really enjoyed the series! How will the exterior be waterproofed?…im assuming a typical home wrap and taped seems. I’m also assuming you guys can order the sips panels with Huber zip sheathing which would make waterproofing faster. Also curious if you have ever done a blower door test on a build? Thanks.
@ShelterInstitute
@ShelterInstitute Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Unfortunately Zip System sheathing is only available in 8' lengths, and we often need seamless panels up to 24' so it is not an option. It would be great if it were available! We don't blower door test because there is still so much work to do after we leave that involves roof and wall penetrations, the results would not be very accurate........and in this case we did not install windows!

What happens with the moisture that is accumulated inside the walls as the house heats up and cools down? Doesnt the insulation you choose trap that inside the wall?

Gotta hate OSB's and all that foam. A house should not be a plastic bag. Glue and foam has no place in a healthy house made from pure breathable materials. Maybe even the US will realise that someday ;-) Kudos on the series though, very well made.

Very beautiful home, congratulations on your work here. Can you tell me, if cutting all of the beams for the home took about six worker months, about what would it have taken if it had been done in pine?
@ShelterInstitute

Pine timbers shave about 15% of the cutting time compared to hemlock.

why dont you leave a 1 inch gab between the house and deck ,so moisture can drain down between rather than a 6 inch step ,it would flow better at same level ,and not be a trip hazard ,

Hi Gaius, Any video on youtube don't shoot the timber frame post details attachment to OSB floor or Concrete floor since there are different ways of doing this. Some of them are using sill plates some of them are directly attaching to concrete . Can you please kindly shoot some details of this . How can we attach a timber post to concrete block stem wall foundation ? Everything is clear but not the post connection to any type of floor structure. :( I appreciate your efforts and very happy to watch your videos . Thanks
@ShelterInstitute
@ShelterInstitute Жыл бұрын
Hi Tora-we have two videos on this topic-'How to Attach a Timber Frame to a Concrete Foundation (Part 1&2). Link here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3i6lIaAjbSthrc. These videos just show a few ways, there many more. In your case, (in very generic terms) if you are using a block wall, you would run rebar from the footing up through the block core, then fill the block cores with concrete and install one of the post bases shown in the video. Hope this is helpful/useful.

@@ShelterInstitute thanks for your answer , i had seen these videos already , you say in a video that it can change if the weather is hurricane and by code needs fastening the post to floor , then if it is raised floor and needs hurricane(or earthquake) how then you connect post to floor ? with metal fsteners to raised wood osb floor ? and how ? with concrete floor it is ok with metal fasteners to concrete but with osb floor ? thanks a lot

With the garage what kind of garage doors can you install since the corners are being obstructed by the supports?
@ShelterInstitute
@ShelterInstitute Жыл бұрын
A 7'x9' overhead door will just fit in there. Some of our customer also install sliders or swinging doors in uninsulated buildings like this garage-gives a more barn like appearance.

What are the green sip panels? Why are there a couple of them?
@ShelterInstitute
@ShelterInstitute Жыл бұрын
When OSB is manufactured, it often sits outside for a while before shipping; the entire outside of the stack is sprayed with paint to give it some protection-the green sheets happened to be on top of the stack when it got sprayed.
