This story seems to be more dialogue and less action than some of Piper's others. I love Four Day Planet and Little Fuzzy. This one is great to fall asleep to.

Short stories: "Last Enemy"; "Time Crime" in two parts; "Temple Trouble"; "Police Operation"; and according to some, "Genesis". "He Walked Around The Horses" is referenced in "Police Operation" so that is a sidebar story to the tale.

@@fraymond3 why would you assume that was the reason? The reason I posited that is because we have a vernacular after many years of Star Trek, Dr. Who, Back to the Future, Bill & Ted, etc. When Back to the Future came out, some people couldn't follow it as I recall. This story was sophisticated.

It is quite possible that temporal probability wave pirates plant literature at key times and places that alters probability curves that were creations of higher dimensional temporal colonisation engineers/artisans. Parasites on temporal infrastructure would create a requirement for a counter defence to keep the whole structure from fracturing along the scars from the temporal boring that these critters leave in the matrix. A denser reality echo of this activity is the battle for virtual reality and the diminishing returns on the costs of trying to keep the whole enterprise from being hijacked and then systematically siphoned dry of liquid assets.

Apparently Mr. Piper was needing a novel from his publishers, this story could have easily been condensed down to a couple hours without losing any of it's vital information, it was filled with a whole lot of filler that had nothing to do with it's primary story.

Authors were paid by the word. Piper never got rich. He was reduced to eating urban pigeons that he shot from his apartment window. In despair he committed suicide rather than accept charity. The irony is one of his best stories was sold the same week he killed himself, and if he had known, might have saved his life, and launched a lucrative career. I would loved to have been able to read, “Only the Arquebus,” but he destroyed numerous manuscripts before committing suicide. The “Terro-Human Future History” was one of the high points of 20th Century Science Fiction. He created monumental characters including Lucas Trask, Calvin “Kalvan” Morrison, Verkan Vall, Carlos von Schlicten, and “Old Man Holloway”and many of his female characters were ahead of their time as well: Rylla and Dalla being the “best men around” capturing Sarrask of Sask, Paula Quinton as adjutant in Uller Uprising, and Federation agent Ruth Otheris on Zarathustra. Most of it is out of print now, and I treasure my collection.

I haven't mentioned anyone else so why should you. If "A" has a opponent "B", making stupid remarks aimed at "B" does nothing to make "A" look any better. Like I have already said Trump is a clown trying to run a three ring circus but his assistants keep quitting and cronies convicted of crimes. Trump isn't cleaning a swamp he is stocking it. I think people who support Trump either do it because they are naïve and stupid or they don't care about the country but only themselves and personal benefit. I am a veteran of the US Army and did not defend the country we have today. We have a man sitting in the Presidents chair who constantly lies about even the smallest things. Did you hear what he said about crowds at his El Paso rally. He multiplied the truth by 10 as he did for his inauguration attendance. I guess Trump just has to wait for Mexico to build they wall because Trump isn't going to do it.
