H. Beam Piper is the sci fi goat in my book. Nobody can tell such full stories in so few words as him.

Loved it particularly the joy with which the hero and dumb blonde had such a great time slaughtering the Bison, sorry superbeef. So many could never be made rare.

The last remarks suggest that the Solar League department of State is running a program to generate and disperse people who are brilliant and not necessarily devoted (off the job) to follow &aid Solar League machinations around the galaxy.

Refreshing to find sci-fi with a discernable story line! The general slant on things probably reflects "accepted" US values of the time, but some things don't fit together very well. Don't understand why the canine interlopers would align themselves exclusively with marginalized plebs rather than courting factions within the oligarchy. Also, don't at all understand why, if the canine plan was to seize the Giant Cow Planet by force in a surprise attack, they would stage a strategically irrelevant assassination of the ambassador of a competing hegemon before making the move.

This story basically glorifies the way people think Texas used to be. I can't tell what the author felt about it, but the story itself seems very proud of its wild planet with it's ineffectual government. Each civilian has to keep a small army on hand (that it must bow to) to provide their own safety! And gee, why would the "dogs" want to cause trouble on Texas planet? Could it have anything to do with the way people seem to treat them. I didn't dislike the story; well written and very interesting, it's just crazy to think about how the time you live in affects the way you present things in your fiction. Aspects of some westerns seem really silly now, but they were all the rage a few decades ago. xD
