i read the book before i saw this movie, and i loved the book, but after watching the 1963 film it felt more as if that was a documentary and the book was written afterwards. Simon is my favorite character of the story; I would argue he was the wise one, but he had a hard time saying things in a way others would understand.

I studied this book in class 9 for Eng literature. The part of Simon talking to the pig,s head and the scene of the parachuter is still hunting me till now. The murder scenes too. I have to say I loved the story and watching the movie after all these years ..it is just a wow!!!

This documentary is amazing. The book I thought was pretty frightening. The movie was good too. It showed that kids are not as innocent as they appear. Only thing is that the guy who played Roger didn't show up. I thought his character was pretty cool. I'll never forget the smile on his face after he killed piggy. Roger was a true sadist.

I really enjoyed this, however I do think that Simon (who played the twin 'Eric') brought up a great point about being abandoned all over again after the documentary was over, and I wish the director and other crew members would have acknowledged the courage it would have taken for him to admit that. As children, i'm sure it felt so amazing to be plucked from wherever you were from to be in this film, and when filming ended, I would imagine they all felt some degrees of isolation and abandonment. The director says he wanted to discover what happened to the children who became men, but it seems like he just wants to discover if filming gave them nightmares, as opposed to responding to any criticism they have of how they were treated, before or after filming. It made the whole exercise of bringing them back seem a little redundant? Why go to the trouble and egg on confessions, only to totally turn away from them? Thank you for uploading though, it was a great watch!

It's incredible to see the boys all grown up, especially Ralph! I read the book in 10th grade and had to do a project on it. I thought the story was too dark, but I had a liking to one of the boys in the novel and movie, Ralph. I liked his leadership qualities. If I had to rescue one of the boys on the island, I would pick Ralph to take back to civilization.

I love how James Aubrey and Tom Chapin got to kind of be friends for this reunion. I was always really drawn to their friendship and growing up I had a crush on both of them, so it was like noticing the same way friendship impacted me in someone else and two people I guess I kind of cared about because the characters resonated with me that much.

I saw this classic many years ago, never forgot the story and wondered what happened to the "boys" as adults. This documentary answered those questions! How Brooks managed to film such an unforgettable film without any professional actors is truly remarkable. It's nice to know that their lives were pretty much successful. Does anyone see some similarities in the story, and what is happening today? I mean the disregard for rules needed for a law and order society? Thanks for sharing!

I saw the film on TV in 1979 and recognized the Aguadilla shots as an obscure beach near my former Coast Guard duty station....today known as Survival Beach. I live in Aguadilla to this day and kayaked to the scene of Simon and Piggy's demise just yesterday May 15th, 2021.

Yes that's tragic, the young James Aubrey is my image of "Ralph". I first read "Lord of the flies" with 12 and was deeply impressed - "Ralph" being a real hero and role model for me. I never lost this respect: While his position as chief was gradually undermined by his ambitious and ruthless opponent Jack, Ralph stayed fair and decent to the very end. You can't demand more of people. While I've no "hate" at all for Tom Chapin, the actor of Jack; someone had to play him, and he did a really good job. I think the book is an excellent allegory how a dictatorship may develop. The majority was drawn to Jack by a mixture of both fascination and intimidation, Roger representing the oppressive "secret police" to create fear.

I was also deeply moved by this segment. Such a poignant reminder that all these people are human beings with often intense feelings. I loved James' portrayal of Ralph so much ... and now, seeing him talk about his difficult childhood, I have infinitely more respect for what a fantastic job he did. As another post said, Ralph for me will always be the kid in this movie. I loved him and Simon the most (which is exactly what Golding intended). And I love those two actors the most as well. Just brilliant performances by both.

A true classic! But I also wonder what kind of trauma a brought to the boys when I first saw the movie but now watching the reunion it seems like everybody turned out to be all right. And piggies accent was so heavy back then that when I watch the movie it reminding me of pippi longstocking with their characters. You guys did a phenomenal job and it's always going to be a true classic thank you so much.

This is GREAT! In the states in the circa 80s & 90s. Lord of the Flies was required reading near the end of Grammar/Middle School to early High School (Freshman Year). I had seen the film and taped on the old VCR not knowing we'd be reading the book in one of my Freshman English classes when I 1st started high school. I was very fond of the film, and didn't mention that I had it at home on VHS. I did very well that quarter while reading the book out loud, & answering the teachers questions. At the end of the book, we had to do a report and I aced it naturally. Finally.. Our teacher mentioned there was a film version of the book, but it was quite rare and she said that she must've called a dozen video stores in the area trying to hunt it down. I raised my hand and said "if I were to find it? Would she be willing to let us watch the film in class?" She said of course. Now the 1990 version had yet to be realeased on hime video, but was in the process. I brought in the 63 black and white orignal the next day to a shocked teacher & class. I was never a very good student, and that was the ONLY time I ever received an A+ on a report card. It's obviously a good memory from high school.👍

Interesting documentary because I watched this film on Criterion and was really curious about this cast. The director seems to use this opportunity to relieve his guilty conscience, which he immediately does when the men tell him they’re fine. The only problem: the actor who could’ve potentially suffered greatest from his role isn’t even here. It’s telling that Roger who played Roger has apparently never had anything to do with this film. The director makes it no secret that the kid had behavioral issues that prompted him put Roger in that role, so even if Roger wasn’t a bad kid, he was certainly told he was. He had the same name as the character, so could he separate the two at that young of an age? I’m really curious as to how he turned out after this experiment.

Interesting point. The only online mention of a Roger Elwin points to Lord of the Flies. If he survived into adulthood and was alive at the time this filmed, he chose not to participate. Maybe it really was a bad experience for him, or maybe he just wasn’t alive.

Goes to show how perfectly he cast the film. This is simultaneously wonderful and hard to watch. Brook is such an observer of life. He is right "the small boy is still in them" - give me a child by the time they are 7 and I will give you the man.

I also am fascinated by the moment that James Audrey says he has had his successes and failures as an artist and "dont we all" - the camera cuts to Brook. He has never failed, his career has always been considered the best of the best. James is not the kind of actor he would cast now, in his work, so its quite a sad moment as any thought that this reconnection would lead to further opportunity with Brook is gone in that moment. I am probably reading too much in it. To be a jobbing actor in the UK is a great thing and something to be celebrated, even if you are not a household name. Good on him. He is incredibly good in the film so its no wonder he went on to have that career.

3:33 OH MY FUCKING DAYS PIGGY'S CORPSE 😵😵😵 That clip wasn't in the movie but it's still disturbing as fuck. The movie does show Piggy's body being collected by the sea but then this scene here must have been an unused extension of it. There was probably blood there too that you can't see in Black and White footage, so that could explain why the boys even the hunters all look so perturbed. Except Roger, if you watch the movie he grins at what he did

Maybe we are savages. Their privileged upbringing didn't spare them their innate nature from surfacing.... again... are we just savages in suits and ties? I read this book at 13. My mom recommended it. Then my English teacher had the class read it. I was grateful to have a mother that was smart enough to love reading and taught my siblings and I to start thinking.

Only Ralph has the courage to face the truth after Simon's death. The greatness of Peter Brook was to get the children enter in the spirit of the film/novel to the point that the film proceeds by itself, life has taken precedence on fiction !

Just found this in the Wikipedia article about the film: ... cuts necessitated that new audio transitions and some dialog changes be dubbed into the film more than a year after shooting. The voice of James Aubrey, who played Ralph, had dropped three octaves and was electronically manipulated to better approximate his earlier voice, but it is still significantly different.

They should remake this film….with an ‘older’ feeling to the film-set in the ‘WWII’ times….because by the looks of the 1st film, those were the times they were in, & maybe make a series of it….showing (like in Lost), how their individual lives were back at school & with their parents/teachers & peers….. So that there is more of a Relationship with them as people & the lives that were left behind & what they face now…. They make new films of old films all the time, why not this….& this is a Classic that could be detailingly improved… (The 1990’s version seems too tame….& not at all realistic in the beginning)…..

I Just heard Paul Di Rienzo say on his radio show, that there was a true story behind this book but the kids in the real story after being abandoned, build a self- made egalitarian society. Different parental influences I guess. I know no details of the original story but its worth looking it up.

How come they (the boys), not know each others names in this 1st version-how come they don’t know who each other are….??? Didn’t they all go to school together? Was it one plane or many…? Ralph was calm, Piggy was reason, Jack order - fascists, like US police in fact - and the entire cause and background of the story was war in the rest of the world. The boys were being evacuated in the first place and they were rescued by a warship
