The metaverse could be our key to making real progress in the fight against climate change, says engineer Cedrik Neike. Examining how AI-powered modeling eliminates the trial and error of wasteful industries, he explores how this emerging technology is already improving everything from the gigafactories that churn out electric car batteries to the fuel efficiency of your home. Learn more about how these "digital twins" are transforming the world - and not a moment too soon.
Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at countdown.ted.com/sign-up

Why need the metaverse to run some simulation or recycle? What is the efficiency gain of designing everything in the metaverse as well? if you have good communication and competent builders, electricians and leaders that think for the future, you can design Houses energy efficiently and weelchair accessable today? ye here is a lot you can do but what has it to do with the metaverse??

Climate activist Greta Thunberg then shared a tweet that misquoted the professor. But recent social media posts have distorted Thunberg’s tweet to falsely claim she predicted human extinction by 2023.

Of course computer modeling is less expensive and more efficient than iterating designs in the physical world, which is why it is used for most engineering already. What will turbocharge this not-new technology is AI, which can not only do it competently, given adequate training and supervision, but many orders of magnitude faster, thus saving energy as well as labor. So the real headline is that the metaverse will help with _absolutely everything,_ not just Climate Change.

The speaker proposes we "simulate the world" inside a "metaverse", to fine-tune & flesh out climate change problems. This is unrealistic, because our capabilities to simulate the lowest levels of physics & matter are not sufficient to do this. Simulations today have errors, which scale into large errors when you try to simulate "everything". This doesn't help us.

I was thinking the same, his idea isn't new and i don't belive he understands how much processing power it takes and flushing out a simulation software to actually di what he says. Doing this stuff in the metaverse, now? No way, if i remember correctly the metaverse is build for low performance hardware so more ppl can join and it lacks basic physics.

00:38 🌍 We're facing an urgency in climate change, reaching the World Overshoot Day demonstrates the depletion of renewable resources. 01:42 🕹 The digital world offers a million times faster learning without the limitations of physics, presenting an opportunity to solve real-world problems efficiently. 02:47 🔋 Battery manufacturing investments, aiming for 10 billion batteries/year in 2030, push for an industrial metaverse to perfect, simulate, and recycle batteries efficiently. 04:16 ♻ Simulation in the metaverse accelerates battery cooling innovations, saving time and resources. Digital factories prevent wastage in traditional manufacturing methods. 05:48 💡 Building gigafactories in the metaverse and creating digital twins of batteries allows for efficient recycling and reusing, reducing battery wastage significantly. 07:21 ✈ Innovating air travel, improving agriculture through vertical farms, and optimizing buildings using digital tools demonstrate diverse applications of the metaverse for sustainable progress. 08:57 🏙 The metaverse aids in pre-building urban spaces, optimizing resources, and ensuring sustainable development, contributing to achieving environmental goals like the Paris Accords.

The speaker makes a compelling case for utilizing the digital world to address urgent environmental issues, presenting practical examples in various industries. However, a critical consideration would be the potential challenges and risks associated with relying heavily on digital simulations, such as the accuracy of predictions and the need for real-world validation. It's essential to ensure that solutions developed in the digital realm effectively translate into tangible, sustainable outcomes in the physical world.

@@Silverlined_69 I appreciate your concern about the environmental impact of building the necessary machines. It's a valid point that we must consider. My focus in critiquing the video's content is to highlight the importance of ensuring the accuracy and realism of the simulations proposed. @@Dez083 My "yes" on points one and two supported your thesis. Maybe you assumed the opposite? On the third point, if you don't understand or believe that psychopathy is real, I can suggest you get access to the DSM-V (in which it's described under ASPD). Maybe learn, before you dismiss? Most psychiatrists & psychologists understand psychopathy to be factors in a recent former president's violent anti-social behaviors (hint: the term "malignant narcissism" is a professional term that includes two psychopathy-related disorders). In that matter, the topic is well understood & documented (plenty of behavioral evidence including the individual's own public words, admissions, and mindset). Duterte is another clear example, of psychopathy causing social "evil" (I use quotes for this word, to distance from its unhelpful religious & supernatural connotations).
