I’m on my third week of orientation and never got to experience a preceptorship in school due to covid. I’m struggling with feeling inadequate. I fear the nurses I work with all think I’m an idiot and must talk about me when I’m not there. Definitely feeling discouraged but I am going to keep on going.

I’ve been working as a new nurse for 3 months and I’m still getting used to it.Things have definitely gotten easier as I’m getting used to the facility but things take time. Good luck to all the new nurses out there ❤️

Thank u sara... Newly joined RN here. During my job hunt i started watching ur videos and tried ur drug calculation methods. I practiced on a daily basis. First time ever i handled iv calculations with ease. And i cracked my interview with dat drug calculation skill which was my last qn infront of the panel they hav asked me to solve a qn i did it well and they hired me. After joining to new firm which is totally diffrent from my home country, all of a sudden one day after a month they asked me to attend a drug competency test i wasnt prepered but i atteneded it and i was scared to be frank but i could score 9/10. Thanks for the lessons. Now about the current video. Its been my second month here and i cry almost everyday. Feel like quitting. So relatable. But thanks for reminding that its ok to cry and feel overwhelmed. I hope i will pass through all these hurdles and become an efficient RN like u

Really depends on your unit... on my unit there's tremendous burn out. It doesn't matter how many years you've worked, if you're working short-staffed it's going to be a bad time.

Hi, I watched your videos while I was still in nursing school. Everything is true about being the new grad nurse. I was anxious and very scared when I started and still nervous when I was on my own. I did not want to harm any patients, I wanted to practice with great care and be a kind and good nurse. The reality is I had two of the worst preceptors ever and the patients noticed also. I never felt comfortable or secure in asking questions or for any help. Yes there is so much to learn on top of providing nursing care. I eventually left that unit and the facility. Nursing needs to change for the better, but I think presently, it never will. It's sad to know that a large percentage of nurses leave the profession all together. What does that tell you? Some nurses are so miserable just as people and it's compounded by heavy workloads, etc. It's shameful that there are articles on-line about bullying on hospital units across the country. I don't even want to be a patient, even though I have many friends who are kind, caring, smart nurses. I wish good luck to all new nurses. :)

Can you give advice on how to talk to the doctors/surgeons in hospitals? A neurologist called me yesterday saying he wanted to talk to me about a patient, and I freaked out. I've been a nurse for 2 weeks and have never had someone so high up want to talk to me Also, how do you remember/keep straight all the facts about your patients? All these people (Doctors, PT/OT/Speech, etc.) come to me asking questions about patients, as if i should know their whole life story. it's so hard to be an expert on everyone's story when I have 5 patients...I always end up getting them confused

I needed this video! I've been a nurse for seven months now and some days I still get that overwhelming feeling of anxiety before going in and then some other days I feel totally fine. Sometimes I really want to quit nursing and get a brand new job but I'm gonna try to stick it out and see how it goes but thank you for this video it definitely helped and it made me feel better knowing I'm not the only one that feels this way!

Merline L nursing school was hard but I feel like it definitely prepared me for nclex. Nclex was pretty tricky but I studied a lot for it and I felt prepared for it. as far as nursing goes I think what's been challenging is time management and mastering skills and just feeling confident overall. it just takes time but I'm hoping that I just keep getting more confident as I work. Also having difficult pts or really sick pts and being able to know what to do can be challenging at times

It’s so dependent on the nursing culture where you end up. They scared us half to death during nursing school saying that once we were off of orientation, we would be on our own completely. That, thankfully, was not the case with me. I always had, and still have, my senior nurses to lean on and ask 1000 questions if I need it, and they’ve been so supportive. I’ve been practicing for 2 years now and comfortable still isn’t a word I’m comfortable using. Still riding that new nurse wave. But I’ve gotten tremendous feedback from my patients which tells me I’m doing something right. I know it just takes time.

I’ve been orienting in ICU as a new grad for the past month and a half... I have been feeling so so overwhelmed. I’m scared to mess up everything. I can’t even flush and IV without thinking I’m gonna hurt my patient. I hope it gets better. I have really been feeling like giving up everyday. All my preceptors have told me that I’m doing great and I don’t give myself enough credit, but I just feel so slow and like I’m not taking actual care of the patients bc I’m so worried about getting things done. Ugh. I hope it gets better. I went into nursing to care for people, and right now it’s like nursing is more about charting and there’s so many hoops to jump thru to even get Tylenol for your patient if it’s not ordered. I feel like I’m gonna forget to chart something super important and get sued or in the rush of trying to care for my patient, chart something incorrectly and not catch my own error. The first couple weeks were spent being excited to go to work because I knew I would learn, now I dread going to work. I work in an amazingly positive environment with so many awesome people who are always willing and ready to answer my questions and help me if I need it. I’m trying to remain positive but it’s so hard!! I really really hope it gets better. I told myself in the beginning this was going to be hard at first because that’s what everyone says about new nursing let alone in a critical care environment, but it’s like all the flew out of my brain once I actually started to experience those doubts. I truly care about the safety of my patients and sometimes I feel like nursing school just does not prepare you for actual nursing and that’s why it’s so overwhelming when you first start. Ugh! Hang in there everyone. You are not alone!!

Awhhh hang in there! I’d say in 6 months to a year you’re going to feel so much more comfortable in your role as a nurse. The beginning is tough.

Coming up on my first year it’s been rough and a great experience at the same time. I’ve made mistakes and I’ve caught things before thing went south and I’ve had pt’s code and not make it. I feel better but still nervous, not as scared but need confidence still. Getting there and much better than my first 6 months. Hoping I keep growing and learning.

Thank you for making this video! I initially watch it right before I left my orientation period and your learning and sharing how there is always someone to ask questions to (e.g. other nurses in that care setting, the charge nurse, et cetera) was such a relief. I'm now, 3 months out of orientation, and I recently worked 4 nights in a row for the first time (I usually have only done 3 night shifts in a row at the most in a week) and between that additional shift and having most of the same patients all 4 nights who had pain, anxiety and needing some IV antibiotics that some of the basic nursing needs of some patients fell off (e.g. making sure to turn some patients every so many hours that can't turn themselves to prevent them from getting a pressure sore) that I felt so inadequate as a nurse, but now I know the best thing I can do is to learn what I can from that experience that caused that feeling of inadequacy and use that to be a better nurse with each new encounter with the patients I get to take care of. :)

Im an international nurse for 7 yrs but I moved to the UK. So its like starting over . Its very hard because everyone makes u feel inadequate, incompetent and they question your ability. Im on a surgical high dependency unit and its very hard to manage. Im here 3 mths and I still feel overwhelmed. Sometimes my mentore is giving me 3 mins per pt with medications. Its so hard . I pray it gets better becuz im really struggling and im highly stressed

I can relate so much to this right now !! I'm in my third week at the hospital and I was only given 6 orientation shifts on the floor with a buddy nurse and I'm a new grad so I'm also trying to study for the nclex at the same time... its overwhelming but it is getting better! And yes you're so right about the physician groups and knowing who to call for what hahah it's so confusing at first!
