It was really good! I'm going to remember that night. Except for him being downstairs! I was thinking about you.

I used to make this same trip every June after winter in the Little Apple. Camped on the lake, boondocked overnight, saw the northern lights every year, best bass fishing and walleye in the world. The Trip up 61 was much less traveled with lots of less signage and construction. Will always love Grand Marais, but I liked it better before it was discovered by the world.

not at all - in fact compared to most states, they're extremely safe, well designed, well signed, appropriately well lit in certain urban/suburban sections, properly graded for the rated speed range, etc. (some states still build freeways that are perfectly flat and suck to drive on because they didn't think how physics actually works on your tires and car in a curve). Etched or grooved as appropriate so you don't go spinning out the instant a speck of snow lands. Many stretches have trees between the opposing lanes to avoid staring into headlights from opposite direction (most states are horrible about that) and of course they are widely spaced to help even more with this. The road surface conditions rarely get bad, since the plows need to work them in a hurry in the winters. The one thing you won't see as much of in MN compared to other states - endless junk for sale sitting at the edge of somebody's property adjacent to the freeway, and billboards - there are some, but far fewer than many places. We let people see nature as they buzz through - and amazing rock formations that pop up along the route between Hinckley and Duluth. Critters too - one time I had a big ass bald eagle land right near the freeway and we briefly stared at each other as I passed. You may mock MN freeways, but notice what happens when a major snowstorm hits here compared to most of the rest of the nation... we plow and shovel, and drive a bit slower than normal - but life goes on. For us, unless it snowed at least 4" overnight, we don't even consider if we might be allowed to have a "snow day" - you are not. Even after the famous Halloween Blizzard back in the day, I don't think we had any days off school. Most states have hundreds dead for a minor event. We have a few road fatalities and maybe a couple of random "heart attack while shoveling" deaths. Oh well, it's worth it.

The worst part about the Drive to Duluth from the Twin Cities IMO is the stretch between Forest Lake and Hinckley because it's literally all farms. Once you pass Hinckley the scenery changes into a mix of farms and forest so its a little more interesting. In Western Minnesota and Southern Minnesota however...it's all flat and boring.

In Duluth....one sees not a single human being. Its concert and cars. Is this the definition of inhumanity?
