Nice job, thanks for making the video. I will be making one soon, 16x36. I think a ledger board that is properly secured is mandatory, a very important component. I also will cut the rafters together, then mark them at 24" for the purlins. 2x4 purlins are easier and maybe stronger, also wider target for screws. Also, I will pre-drill the steel on the ground, much easier. I'm using 6x6 posts are 2x8 rafters on 16" centers. 2x12 double beam, 2x12 girder.

i were to upload vid, it would have to be this. I've tried to work and narrate at the same time. NOPE. One or the other!! Anyway, Great job ! Love using thae 🚜. I often have to find ways to do a two-man job by myself. Never underestimate creativity when its feuled by survival! One thing for sure, add diagonals ro the front for lateral bracing! About 1/3 the way down the post is a sweet spot. Or gentle racking back and forth over the years (or one well-placed windstorm) will loosen it to unsafe levels! Cheers!

I didn't flash it. I do get some water through there but it's the side of the barn which was getting rained on before. Flashing it would be the correct way to do it though.

how far apart did you space everything? the posts, the rafters the 2x4's?
@chuckpechan5 жыл бұрын
What about diagonal bracing from the roof to the posts? Also, what about flashing on the top where the new roof meets the barn? And one more question, why didn't you use a nailer against the barn to fasten the rafters to? I am going to be building a 20' lean to that is 40' long and am trying to see how other people do things and why. Thanks for the video.
@jameswalker5905 жыл бұрын
@ieatyomama I think it's the slope of the ground playing tricks with your eyes. Notice how the barn is raised up off the ground on the right side? He used a laser level to make sure the posts are level, so I'd bet what we're seeing is just the slope of the ground vs his roof
@alabastardmasterson5 жыл бұрын
@@jameswalker590 it's definitely not level. Not 2' out but it's out, unless the camera is playing tricks
@Graysail0r5 жыл бұрын
@@alabastardmasterson Nope I'm his neighbor -and Brother in law - it's flat. Must be the tripod the camera was on. If you look at where the rafters are connected to the barn they hit at the same spot. The ground isn't very level at all so maybe that's it.

Did you use brackets at the barn and of the rafters? And did you notch the post end of the rafters? Also what is the distance between each post?
@SoatMon4 жыл бұрын
I did use brackets at the barn ends and notched (bird mouth) the post end. The posts are 8 feet apart. That distance worked out evenly but I wish I had done a couple at 10 feet, 8 feet is kind of tight if you are backing a trailer into it.

@@SoatMon My husband is building something similar off the side of our house. (14' x 35') Although, it will have a rear and exterior sidewall. It is for our RV. He did his rafters 16" OC. I thought 24" would be sufficient as we are doing a straight metal roof - no decking - and we don't get snow here in CenTex. (well, as long as you don't include LAST WEEK! LOL) Anyway, you seem to have proven 16" was a bit overkill for our purposes. Oh well....

Yeah...I remember when eyelashes first came out i was like "hell yeah finally SOMETHIN to help catch a little dust when i do the safety squint" it was centuries before anyone thought of a physical barrier you could see thru. The ones you cantt see thru are for welding. And safety glasses actually made of glass kinda defeats the purpose. Imma start calling them safety plastics. I bought a work light today and on the box, in large print: WARNING: ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES. Always? Really?? Its a fuckin light for gods sake. No wonder noone takes it serious when glasses would actually be in your best interest. I cant wear em all the time they fog up, fall off, drip sweat, and i dare you to wear them with a dust mask. I always ask..." Am i safer blind but protected, or witnessing but vulnerable? Yup. Im bored

building a lean too roof for small 8x8 need to know how to do rafters every vid i seen kinda skips over this most important detail. using 2x4s with 2ft drop. Anyone that recommend a vid thank You
@SoatMon4 жыл бұрын
I used joist hangers at the top of the rafter to attach to the building. You have to cut a angle on the end of the rafter to match the pitch of the roof. You can just hold the board up to the building and draw a line to match the pitch. Then secure in the joist hanger. You can use rafter ties at the lower end to hold it in place. Both are available from home depot or lowes. Good luck.
