This is a great trick. Im by no means an experienced joiner, but ive built about 6 or 7 roofs and love watching videos on it. What a great method for the angle. I personally cut a block the size of the remaining timber after the birdsmouth and measure from top of the wall plate to top of the block ive cut. And that gives me a measurement to where my plumb cuts need to be.

Lean to, roof Mr A ! it’s leaning towards not leaning as well ! That’s enough of that. I think these builders who make vids of their work put the others to shame. Your skill, technique, quality control, site safety and cleanliness is there for all to see. Not just the end result but the hidden stuff that is so hard to see unless you are on top of every stage. One single mistake and all those that don't have the confidence to broadcast will pile in! The fact that you do this means you'll always be up at the top of the trade and customers can engage you with confidence. Thank God for KZbin!

Trying to get all the joints bang on is so dependent on so many variables ie the sole plate being dead level the outside wall being real parallel with the existing wall the nominal timber sizes being all the same size and square generally nowadays from my experience u can’t have all of them things falling in to place ( especially the timber sizes) so it’s always a compromise on a drawing it works perfectly but in reality it rarely does so u compensate as all chippies do on site and make it work but for me u still can’t beat traditional roof construction so great tutorial

@Mr_A_Builders6 ай бұрын
Hi and thanks for the comment. I’ve only ever used this method to get the plumb cut of a common rafter and therefore the degree pitch of the roof. I then use my roofing square set to the degree pitch on the hip scale to do the hip cut. However, it would be worth a go as long as you have got your height above plate off the common rafter first, transferred it onto your hip using the same batten screwed to the top. Don’t forgot to cut you wall plate corner off first to 45 degrees so you can get a full bearing of your seat cut. Hope that makes sense 👍🏻

hi, so where we are you have to bolt and dog washer your doubles/triples around roof lights plus joist hanger all openings, rafter clip the bottoms and truss clip the tops or are you doing that in the next part? great episode
@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris and thanks for watching. I will be coach bolting the doubles but I won’t be using joist hangers on the top and bottom timbers. What I do is use a large bracket at the top of each double and bolt this into the bolted wall plate and into the top of the double. I can see where the joist hangers would come into play if the rafter top and bottom were longer therefore more weight. However I’ve done 400mm centres and used 8”x2” C24 timbers so I’m more than confident that it is structurally sound. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻
@chrishyde5995 Жыл бұрын
@@Mr_A_Builders its what our building control specify we are not allowed to use coach bolts now it has to be a hi-tensile steel hex head on a square plate with dog washers rafter clips at the bottom and truss clips as they will not allow just nailing anymore as we are mostly on clay and have had a lot of movement over the years

Great vids. Thanks for posting. I have a lean to on my old 1840's stone garage. The roof is slate tile and is laid directly on the stone. The lathes are rotten and it needs replacing So I want to add a bolted wall plate and rebuild using the process you outlined in this video. The stone where the bolted wall plate will be fixed is pretty wavy. I was thinking I could use packers where needed when bolting it to the stone would that work or would you advise something different?
@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Hi Steve my first thought about the bolted wall plate would be to bolt on temporary in place and cut above and below with a grinder. Remove the plate and remove the face of the stone between these cuts with a breaker to form a flatter surface rather than packers and then fix using a two part resin you can push all thread into which you can buy from Screwfix. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 👍🏻

The are typically called 'shed-roof' here in the States. I assume this in in Great Britain as his ledger connection only works if that is a structural masonry wall. Anything in the States built after ~1940 has what they call a brick-veneer'. You can't attach a roof like that to a brick veneer as the veneer is not structural.

Nails have been used for decades so who are we to argue😁 however you can get hex head Strutural timber screws in various lengths so you could use those straight through the top of the rafter, through the birdsmouth and into the wall plate. I have really enjoyed watching the build series. This sort of thing fascinates me. But I'm a domestic gas installer and am very aware that the boiler flue terminal must not be enclosed - not even partially enclosed - and the build is reaching that critical point. What are your plans for that? A bit more info: The concentric flue is used for air inlet and products of combustion (POC) outlet. As the area becomes more enclosed, the dispersal of POC will slowly become compromised with the risk of air with greater CO2 concentrations being breathed in by the boiler. That leads to the risk of more C02 and then the dreaded carbon monoxide (CO). Now unless you have a sensor onsite continuously monitoring the CO2 and CO levels you will not have a clue as to the current situation. The typical "Oh, there isn't any risk; we will be ok" can evaporate very quickly when people begin feeling groggy. And just a bit more "food for thought" - you don't know the condition of the boiler as it is now. It may not have been serviced for years and could be belching out CO. Partial enclosure could raise the risk from [the unappreciated] "high" to "Deadly". I am being purely selfish with this post. If I can keep you alive then we will get the next episode... 😀😀
@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen thanks for the comment. I understand your worries and can ease them by saying that as we speak we are preparing the area for the new boiler and will move it prior to any permanent sealing of the extension roof, doors and windows. You will have your next episode 👍🏻

@Mr_A_Builders Жыл бұрын
Hi Ian. It’s not the first time it’s been asked mate so all I can say is how can decades of carpenters before me be wrong all of a sudden. It must be the new trend 😂👍🏻
@prestonian1066 Жыл бұрын
@@Mr_A_Builders Oh I wasn't doubting that you were doing it correctly. I suppose I didn't phrase the question very well. I wondered if I had missed anything or any other supports because with all of that weight it seems a lot for nails to support. I suppose I was hoping you would tell me some scientific jargon about lateral forces and what not, so that when I build mine the same way, I don't lie awake at night worrying that the nails will rust and everything collapses. Anyway...brilliant guide to simplify the process. Thank you.

I’m still waiting for the scientific jargon myself Ian to come from the people who say I’m a cowboy for doing it this way but they have never come up with any.
