The human side of a very and fully human Time Team member. My thanks to the alert cameraman that decided to capture a conversational gem. A grandfather and a grandson immortalized.

yes, we hear a lot of the commanders and order of battle etc. but it is the intimate personal accounts of the war that I like hearing about

Seeing Phil talk candidly off script just makes me love the man more. He's our family's favorite archeo-hero!

I love this. I love seeing the affection a grandson has for his grandfather. So glad this moment in time was caught on film.

If not for Phil, Mick, and Tony this show would probably have had a short run. They make it more interesting and entertaining.

My grandfather too was in WW1 for the Canadians.. was wounded in Cambrai, France Sept 29 1918 after 3 1/2 years in service.. and sent home.. He lived until 1975. He was the hardest working toughest man I ever knew I have looked up to him all my life.. Despite his handicaps he worked every day of his life until he was 75 then passed on three years later.. To our grandfathers all of us!

Phil would never be happy doing anything other than archaeology. It's what he was born to do. It's in his blood and in his soul.

Lovely hearing the story. My great-grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Italy in 1910, and then was scooped up by the U.S. Army and sent back to Europe for WWI. Don't know when he went out, but like Phil's grandfather, he was discharged from the services in April of 1919.

World War I might have been the most stupid War ever fought. It was about nothing and changed nothing. Respect all those that served but it makes Vietnam look like a just cause.
