Mick was alright, but if it really wasn't his interest he pretty much didn't care about it at all. If you watch some of the episodes where it's something Roman and he's actually there, he really doesn't show the same enthusiasm, or even really seem to care at all. But episodes where they're doing some kind of abbey or something he cared about more? The change in his attitude and demeanor was remarkable.

I feel like these episodes were made just yesterday, even though it is already near a decade since Mick Aston passed away -- but then those aerial shots pop up: from further away, tracing a wider arc, more bouncy and with a spot of flickering rotor shadow ~ and then it occurs to you, that since 2013 we have had a revolution in drone photography... so the world has kept evolving and much has happened since. RIP Mick. 💗🖖🤓

Absolutely loved all those occasions where Mick and Phil had time to puzzle out what some of the features might indicate, what structure they might infer and how the team could proceed to prove or disprove their ideas. Where to prioritize their examination, going deeper, following a structure, widening the trench, etc. It was fascinating that they sought (and usually found) an approach that would that could BOTH prove or eliminate their idea WHILE opening up or disproving any alternative solution. They kept their minds open to finding out WHAT was ACTUALLY there. Even a 'negative' answer to their questions and theories was a GOOD result to them, because it was a further lead in discovering an accurate idea of what WAS there. And Mick and Phil made working out each puzzle such a relatable, charming part of the show. They INVOLVED us in the mystery and made you eager to find out what each detail revealed about the site.

The interactions are what make it unique and special and highly enjoyable! Understandably, the charming and knowledgeable Alice Roberts, on digging for Britain simply can't establish that level of jocularity and familiarity by simply visiting digs. I have seen her be quite quietly funny about a Casio watch found on a dig recently, but you'd have to know she was being funny. And the Time Team guys are full of energy and enthusiasm. A prof. archaeologist and his team get to feeling a bit grim after 4 mos or more on the same site. And not everyone has the wit and rapport of the Time Team team!

I’d love to know if any of these sights that they have excavated were further excavated to discover more about the history of the amazing sites that they have started and never finished to a more final explanation of layout and historical significance of these amazing findings I certainly love the 3 day digs but have always wondered if they were continued or covered back over
@nevyen149
@nevyen149 Жыл бұрын
The short answer is yes...a lot of them were continued. In some cases, the Time Team were assisting a dig already going on...so those kept going for sure. In many cases, they were essentially doing a test dig, and if they found something unique, then a university, county, or other archaeological entity often continued the dig. All the pits dug in people's yards or public spaces were filled back in as soon as any data was recorded. A couple of their digs did, in fact, change what was known about a certain time period or area.

You have to research a bit The team were all employed by different units or universities so they went back to their day jobs, If they found something significant then the County archaeology units applied for grants or divert money from existing projects. A lot of Archeology is done by registered charities. But if pursued you find that buried in the archives of various places are technical reports

Nothing “quaint” about it. Describing the status of an artifact or site describes part of of the structure of society at the time. If you find fine pottery shards along with, perhaps, a high value coin that will give an indication of the stratum of society/ property you are excavating.

@@CoincidenceTheorist I remember laughing out loud when in an early episode they unearthed a medieval book clasp. First they got all over excited and second they had to send it off to a specialist to identify. Any half way experienced detectorist would have known immediately what it was and they are not that uncommon on the finds table at many MD clubs. It annoyed me greatly that the archaeology community wasted years of time decrying detectorists instead of recognising the passion, skills and knowledge they could have used if only they weren't so closed minded and snobbish.

I used to enjoy Time Team but I eventually found parts of it a bit forced. Some of the staged silliness between the 'yokel', the 'prof' and the 'luvvy' actor dumbed it down too much for me. I'd have preferred they got rid of the fluff and trusted the audience to have a bit of enthusiasm for a more intelligent approach. Actually, I'd enjoy seeing Alice Roberts and Helen presenting a decent archaeology show without the 'three day' rushing about daftness. IMHO of course...

Both are common round Hamsterley area and are very pretty and tough and give good shelter to animals. But Gorse is VERY spikey! There is a saying "Kissing is out of fashion when gorse is out of bloom". Happily it flowers a lot and for a long time over the year! Cheers.🙂 Ah, I just reviewed the full episode and there was a close-up. They are Gorse. Glad your question prompted me to enjoy this episode again. 👍

@JC-wv7om
@JC-wv7om Жыл бұрын
Likely would need significant private or consistent proper government funding to do that. 5 days of digging would also need another day or two for properly finishing out the mapping and backfilling that's done off camera. I'd love for Time Team to get enough funding to do more frequent AND longer term digs, and be a full time career for everyone involved.
@maxsdad538
@maxsdad538 Жыл бұрын
Never. The model for the "3 day exploratory" is just that... an exploratory evaluation to determine if further conservation is required or further excavation is justified. As for the "mapping and backfilling", that has always been in addition to the scheduled "dig, and typically takes several weeks to complete. At the end of three days, they don't just grab their trowels and go home. there's still all the cleaning and evaluating, recording, and FINALLY, reburning or turning the site over to a local archaeological society to continue. And one of the senior team members (often Carenza) will write up the official report for professional review. Many of the shows HAVE been longer than 3 days (on camera), and several of them are digs that have been going on for several years and Time Team has been asked to assist and evaluate. But these are all professionals with other "real" full time jobs, and three days is all they can schedule for these episodes.

@@juliaforsyth8332 Well, that's true that disproving things is important. But somewhere along the line it would be nice to have proof for what some archaeological feature actually is. The sweeping and confident-sounding interpretations wear a bit thin after a while.

@@mikef.1000 Yep, totally agree. Especially dear old Francis Pryor whom everyone appeared to worship and to which everything 'was ritualistic'. How many times was it said that some relatively common find was described as that of 'an elite' group. It's just a vague guess so treat it as such.

Oh don't be silly. How on earth can anyone believe te nonsense that is the Old Testament (or the new). It's just political twaddle, written by men, for the glory of men and to empower men.
