Beautiful drum. I have an old ‘38 15” Leedy Broadway that I salvaged from near death! Best drum I’ve ever owned. Love your little drum. Sounds really special and cheeky at higher tunings.

That's a great drum you have! What's the finish on it? Thank you for the kind words, this was a fun drum to get back into shape!
@rubytuesday13457 ай бұрын
Thanks Nick. It’s a black/gold Duco finish. When I got it, most of the finish was gone (as is often the case) so I took the decision to strip it back to bare wood, respray the black & gold and refinish it with new lacquer. The throw was broken and it took about a year to source a replacement as they only made the 4-point throw for a couple of years (38-40). It’s a stunning drum now and always a pleasure to play. Perhaps you could do a video on a 15” snare? They’re often overlooked but really lovely drums. Many younger drummers are unaware that some snares can be 15”!!

Wow - that’s quite the restoration. I’d love to see how it turned out! I did 1 15” video, but it was an old WFL parade snare. I’d love to find a piccolo 15” supralite - that thing is wild!

@@NickCostaMusic You'll have to let me have your contact info and I can send you a few photos. I'll have to track down your WFL video as I've missed that one.

With all of these snare Saturdays the biggest thing I’m learning is that all of these snares have a greater tuning range than I would have guessed. That includes this beautiful drum. Thanks for sharing your cleaning method also. Well done.

Right?! This snare gets surprisingly low. I really appreciate you following along, and I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the series!

What a unique drum. I love the split lugs. Sounds great, especially at the higher tunings.

Totally - made for jazz, though super versatile IMO

Would love to hear a nice half time shuffle in that high tuning!

Meant to say “cranked” tuning.

great snare drum !

I agree - design was way ahead of its time too!

@@NickCostaMusic I have a 1965 Ludwig Downbeat 14x4. Has double-sided logs. Two bolts are screwed into one lag, and the bolts are not on the same line (I think you have encountered such drums and understand what I am writing about). Outwardly, I like this design better, but it is less successful, since a torque appears and the drum body at the place where the lags are attached can begin to collapse. Ludwig later abandoned this piccolo drum design. And TAMA stepped on the same rake in the 90s))) Your drum has a more correct design.

I have a late 60s downbeat and I've been looking for a matching snare - except they're crazy expensive now! I'm guessing because they were a short lived design?
@ЯрославАндреев-п7я6 ай бұрын
@@NickCostaMusic These drums have been insanely expensive for a long time. I think it's because there probably weren't that many of them made. If the drum head is not pulled too tightly, then the structure should withstand

Very dry shell. Sounds best at that medium tuning.
@NickCostaMusic7 ай бұрын
I agree. Wonder if that’s due to the shell, depth, or age? Maybe combo of all 3 🤔
@jkozol7 ай бұрын
I think it's the age, the mahogany and the rerings

Brother, those throw offs are notorious for not clearing the bottom hoops. Try shimming it.

Never knew that - maybe that's why the previous owner drilled another set of holes to raise it? Appreciate the info!
