The other character intentionally broke the vase so the palace could deduct damages from the wages that were going to be sent to the people who sold Maomao into slavery.

Basically a way for them to give her direct bonus but deduce her wage so her former employer/kidnapper would only get the share from the wage (because no one can really record the reward/bonus you get).

It's enough their reactions seem so forced all the time and now they are kinda slow to take more subtle hints in the plot. Man, how many times I try to watch their reactions because they are watching good animes but just can't get into their stuff :( They are going to misunderstand so many stuff in this anime lol

Seems she got annoyed when he paused it because people said it would be her type of show and she takes a bit to get into things. But he is right. Pausing and discussions seems ripe for this show. Learning stuff too. I think he genuinely likes it. She loves it. She always said she doesn’t care about action and this is more her speed. Not sure why she likes this more than dr stone. Not saying this isn’t better just sad that dr stone got beat in only 2 eps of another show when they watched so much dr stone. Feels like she didn’t like dr stone. 😢reminds me of people who watched 1 ep of frieren and claimed it’s better than all hxh bleach aot etc fair but dang. 😅

Chinese emperors have a harem where usually you get 1 OFFICIAL QUEEN aka his real wife and multiple concubines (which are mistresses basically) The reason they had this system is because Monarchy have to ensure that their bloodline stays continuous for years and also that you end up with a capable successor. Crown prince are typically decided by seniority so whoever gets to be emperor next is usually FIRST COME FIRST SERVE. So if a concubine give birth before the queen, then the concubine's son become the crown prince. princesses are usually married to officials and foreign country leaders (their king or prince) to gain political benefits. eunuchs are dudes that is like Okarun.... no balls. Because they want to ensure loyalty of the eunuch so they cut off their balls to make sure the eunuchs can't sleep with the maids or concubines (who basically belongs to the emperor alone). Eunuchs and maids are USUALLY normal citizens either scouted or who chose to come to the palace to serve to get paid well and send their money back home to help their family. rarely but SOME MAIDS are chosen to become concubine by the royal family.

Usually newly appointed Emperors might also delay the process of officially announcing the Queen title if he doesn't have a son yet. Which is why the Emperor in this anime doesn't have an official Queen yet, only concubines, of whom the most prestigious are the high-consorts.

Chinese eunuchs usually lost a lot more than their testicles, too. It wasn't uncommon to lop the genitals off entirely, leaving only a small opening for urination. Bladder incontinence was common and eunuchs usually smelt of pee or whatever they tried to wear to cover the smell.

Just a bit of a clarification needed here, succession is only "first born, first to the throne" by the official Queen/Empress, as often these were politically motivated, should the "Legal" wife not have any male heir, then the title falls to any firstborn son of the concubines. So even should the Legal wife produce a male heir yrs after a concubines son, the title automatically goes to the Queen/Empresses Son. Hence why it was almost standard court drama that sons often died to ensure a chosen male succeeds.

Good call. To elaborate a bit - in mandarin, the character 'mao' means cat. However, because mandarin has a thing about doubling up the characters, the actual word for cat usually adds a second character, as in 'xiao mao' . The 'xiao' means little, but often isn't meant to mean the cat is necessarily physically small, but is partly a diminutive, and partly just there to add the second character. (They do the same sometimes with 'old', so the word for hawk is 'lao ying' with 'ying' being the character for hawk, and the 'lao' mostly there to add a second character). In this case, mao mao is likely just repeating the cat character, to an effect similar to 'kitty cat.' There is also a chance that this is a different character with the same 'mao' pronunciation - can't tell since we don't see the actual characters.

Concubines - Women who serve as wives to Royalty, but don't gain any power from the arrangement other than having their needs met, possibly family as well should a male heir be born. Eunch - male worker whos had his entire package removed so as to not be able to impregnate the Concubines Lady in waiting - frmale attendants to either royalty or concubines. They did everything that is needed, from cooking n cleaning, to even dressing up the person they care for.

Live action dramas that take place in the Forbidden City (the Chinese Emperor's harem) are basically a hugely popular genre of TV shows in Asia. This is the first anime I've seen that is using this setting, although I'm sure there have been others. I think it's really cool that this historical fiction has been so well received and will increase interest in Chinese culture outside of just food and martial arts.
