I don't think anyone who has never built and produced that amount of work, for a kiln that one has never fired before, understands the mixed emotions of elation and downright fear. You sir, handled this with the utmost grace and decorum. Hats off to you.

Congrats! It’s been fun to watch this process come to fruition. I want to buy a small piece from your first wood firing. Maybe in future episodes you’ll consider telling us more about materials you’re using (what wood you’re using, the little clay feet on everything, etc) and some technical details about temps, times, and the like. Most of will probably never see a big wood kiln like that, but it’s fun to watch and learn. 👍

I was wondering what do you put on the bottom of you pieces and on your lidded jars to make sure they don't stick to the shelfs or each other? I have no luck with wax resist!
@benpatterson44525 жыл бұрын
In atmospheric firings, like salt, soda and wood, "wadding" is used, on the bottoms and between lids. There are different recipes, but it's usually a mixture of kaolin and alumina. Wax alone won't prevent sticking, unless you mix in some alumina hydrate.
@metalikmike15 жыл бұрын
What is the stuff you are using to place underneath the pots?
@Cate74515 жыл бұрын
They are wads, not to sure but little damp balls of flour and alumina. Something like that. Work like kiln wash. Prevent the pot from sticking to the shelf, and lids to the top of jars and between individual plates in a stack. Ash likes to turn to glaze and stick things together. Fun.
@valeriecolclough82805 жыл бұрын
still eagerly awaiting the unload Mathew,

Do you put clay wads under all of your pots? If so, curious as to why. Thanks! Love your videos! Prayers that the kiln Gods are good to you!! 😊
@peggymcthompson2615 жыл бұрын
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was amazing to watch. How many hours did it take to load that kiln? How many pieces are in that load? How long did it take to throw all those pieces? I could ask so many more questions. But I won’t I’ll wait somewhat patiently till the next video. 🤗 Beautiful

I noticed the brick is a new colour inside the kiln. Could you let us know the reason or is there a vid with ecxplanations waiting to be edited?
@danbance57995 жыл бұрын
It's an IR reflective coating. Boosts the fuel efficiency and helps achieve higher temps. My guess is it's ITC-100. Expensive stuff, but should, in theory, be well worth it.

What are the balls you are putting on the bottom of the pieces. What are they made of and how easy are they to remove?
@robertcole10985 жыл бұрын
That was amazing!! Are they all your pieces or did you have some of you friends in there as well? How many pieces did you put in? How long did it take to load? Last question, when will you unload it? What a great job you did Mathew, it reminds me of ww2 bomb shelters that I’ve seen in the war museum in London, but this is much better way to use it. I can’t wait to see them all come out, congratulations. Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
