The drummer is none other than Jimmy Fox who went on to play with Joe Walsh in the James Gang. really really a great drummer. Listen closely and you can hear it here. Undoubtedly evident with the James Gang

@@sheiladawg1664 Touche! point well taken. Frankly, I was too ignorant to make the connection Thanks. I saw The James Gang through the fence so to speak at the Minnesota State Fair. My recollection was that I was 13 years old (1970) and they were playing at an area that required admission. It was not the grandstands but rather a teen area.. I just looked up their tour schedule for 1970 they were there for 5 straight days. WOW! Did Mr Fox play drums on the Outsiders hit "Time won't let me" .

Tom King's brass arrangement with John Madrid on the scream trumpet missing on in this version really made this song leap out of the AM radio speakers.
@basher51072 жыл бұрын
Tom King and Chet Kelly wrote this song and it was recorded in June of 65 and was released in January of 66 Tom King along with Tommy Baker put together the horns which would become a staple of Outsiders music.

Someone below commented that Jimmy Fox played drums on this number. He actually departed for college and was replaced by Ronnie Harkai around the same time the band recruited Sonny for the vocals on this song.

According to the bass player they never took their horns on the road with them. Hence the 'live' version here. He also said TV studios *all* had bad audio then hence the need for a lip sync.

The "live" performance that your hearing is not, the audio from the video of the song. On the video they are lip syncing to a recorded track. The guitars were not plugged in because they were just mouthing the words and pretending to play.

The performance you’re hearing isn’t even live. The video was from a TV show where they mimed to the studio track. The sound comes from a faux “live” LP that they did using stripped down studio tracks and inserted crowd noise.

I get the reference and other than age and weight I see the resemblance. The drummer is Jim Fox who left the band shortly after this was recorded. This was recorded after returning to the band from the previous iteration of the band called "The Starfires". His last appearance with The Outsiders-to the best of my knowledge and recollection-was at a local "battle of the bands" in Akron, Ohio I believe in August 1966 before leaving to form The James Gang a couple years before recruiting Joe Walsh to replace Glen Schwartz.
@sheiladawg16643 жыл бұрын
@@lous5442 They were from Cleveland, James gang was mostly from Kent; OH. Grew up there.
@lous54423 жыл бұрын
@@sheiladawg1664 Actually Jim Fox and the original bass player (Tom Kriss, late replaced by Dale Peters) and the guy Joe replaced as lead guitar (Glen Schwartz) were from CLE. Joe Was from NJ and a student at Kent State, and played in a local teen (18+) night spot (The Fifth Quarter) with a band called The Measles before The James Gang. I grew up five miles down the road from Kent and went to school there from '67 to '69.

Don't think this is "live". Tepid vocal expressions, instruments not plugged in, no amps, etc. Great sounding, and a better version without the added horns from the familiar version. Thanks.
