A deep dive into the Tissot PRX Chronograph

The Tissot PRX has been a constant source of joy for retro watch fans since its release, maintaining its hype with every new release in the 1970s-style ranks. Although plenty of brands - both major and micro - have taken their turn at producing an integrated-bracelet watch that evokes the Royal Oak without breaking the bank, the Tissot PRX is seemingly unmatched in quality, design, and bang-for-buck. Recently, Andrew paid a visit to the Tissot factory in Le Locle, Switzerland where he met the brand's CEO Sylvain Dolla. The two pored over some favourites of the PRX collection, taking particular interest in the recently released Tissot PRX Chronograph, and you can watch that now here.
As Sylvain happily admits: "I have a strong emotional link with the PRX."
During his first week at Tissot, the CEO sat down with his Product Manager to see if there were any archive pieces ripe for a revamp. That's when he was shown the original PRX.
"I had butterflies in my stomach and I said, 'How fast can you go for this one. We need it!'"
This would turn out to be an extremely shrewd move for the brand. What makes the Tissot PRX such a great proposition is the culmination of its looks, production quality, and also the heritage of Tissot itself.
Especially with the Tissot PRX Chronograph, the use of the ETA Valjoux movement shows dedication to the Swiss history of the watch, considering that the ancestral Valjoux 7750 has been used in sports chronographs consistently for decades. Given that the Tissot PRX began with a quartz version, it would have been easy for Tissot to release a quartz chronograph first to test the waters, but we’re glad they really went for it. I just got the tiffany blue PRX quartz as a travel watch and while it doesn't have the refinement of my Omega or Rolex, its an excellent watch. It punches well above its price class and I'm genuinely in disbelief that it costs $400. I also love the Rolex Oyster Quartz design of the PRX. Its the perfect watch design - clean lines but still has presence. I couldn't be happier with the purchase...

Picked up a blue PRX chrono a couple of weeks. Build quality is amazing and feels great on the wrist. Punched well about its weight class. I really hope they release a rubber strap for the PRX chrono!

Great video. At first I was surprised that you wore a RO to meet with Tissot. My initial reaction was: Couldn’t you wear a Tissot yourself out of respect? Then I thought well, maybe you don’t own a Tissot, so in that case what should you wear?? If you wore a less expensive watch (than a RO) then it could be perceived as a competitor to Tissot, which would definitely be worse. So, you settled on the RO because its in a totally different league from Tissot, and it looks like the PRX. Got it!

The old logos were better. However, the build quality and finishing on the modern variants is exceptional. Just wish the non-chronograph versions were 38mm and the chronographs 40mm.

The world needs a 37-38 mm! I own the 40mm but it is too big on my quite large 7.25 wrist, especially the dial surface and the lug to lug including the first link. And the 35mm wears too small.

Hello, is there anyone here who thinks the original prx has been made according to the rolex 1977's design with date and integrated bracelet? As I figured it out, rolex came out in 1977, and the original prx, which was seastar in that Era, came out in 1978, and they are like pretty much the same!

Its the rich people made these AP PP RM brand overprice. If u actually take the materials the work what have u? Go up to $100- millions? Put this watch next to them and tell me whats a huge difference? I think rolex is just right when it comes to their pricing and i agree.

Too bad about the jerky lowbeat movement. How a swatch-brand cannot use a smoother 28.8k bph movement is beyond comprehension. Also, it appears in this video that the flat crystal has excessive reflections. Seeing as another swatch-brand (Hamilton) does not use anti-reflective coating crystals, is that the case with Tissot as well? Shameful. At these elevated prices, Swiss brands need to up their game to compete in the modern watch world and include basic features that other brands costing half these prices are including in their offerings. Get with the program Swatch!

I'm confused. The Tissot PRX chrono has a 28.8k bph movement and also uses AR coating. Not sure what you're on about? And use of the word 'shameful' is completely OTT regardless; Rolex don't apply AR coating on most references, but I've yet to hear it described as shameful.
