this is a crazy good idea that i dont think anyone would come up with but actually doesnt seem that hard to code or get working, you really showed how inferior the current system is for cubing due to it being stolen from speed stacking. Well done and id love to see this at a comp in the future
@TheMagicCuber11 ай бұрын
This is genuinely one of the coolest advancements cubing has seen in a long time. I was so sad I couldn't make it to the seminar and the replay on twitch didn't show any of this (plus the audio was bad), but this seems awesome! My only questions are how it interacts with WCA as well as what would need to happen setup-wise with these (including wifi and power/batteries), as well as the cost should one break/need repair.
@TimeBaseProject11 ай бұрын
We plan on giving organizers the option of AA batteries and a rechargeable battery. As far as the network, it is run on a local server with supplied preconfigured routers. In the unlikely case that the system goes down during a comp, scorecards can always be used as a backup. Repair cost would be very much on a case by case basis but no single repair would be incredibly expensive.

if the display does so much already, why don’t you have it say 8/12 to eliminate extras and incidents based on the judge saying the wrong things in inspection?
@TimeBaseProject11 ай бұрын
We want to keep it simple. The more we add to the display, the more we could get wrong. While this is a simple thing in theory, if we add all the simple things, the attention to the other things may be lower. We discussed this a while ago and determined that we won't include this initially. This may be added later.

How about keeping going for 10+ minute times (and switching to (h:)mm:ss format)? Sure, you would need to run an internal timer and the judge would have to manually stop the timer, but can't really see how this would be particularly difficult.

a great relief in many cases. But there are still some problems, e.g. Not every building has good Wi-Fi, let alone Wi-Fi. Another thing is that printing on those nfc cards will also be quite difficult to deal with (I think your photo and your data printed on the card) and the whole timer will be even more expensive. And hold on, I don't know how long can it works. The battery will be interesting
@TheBookDoctor11 ай бұрын
The concept is very intriguing. Ergonomically, as a judge, reaching up to interact with the TimeBase display does not seem ideal. I would much prefer it the buttons were on a separate pad or something that's down on the table. Also, the buttons (wherever they are) should be larger, have some sort of indicative icons on them, and be physically separated so that it's less likely you'll press the wrong one. It would also be good to have some sort of "undo" button in case you press +2 when you meant to press DNF or something like that.
@CewbPianist11 ай бұрын
having the sensor on the bottom might be better imagine some people judging can't reach the top, the bottom would work better
@TimeBaseProject11 ай бұрын
This has been brought up to us in the past. We have some loose plans for a peripheral board that would connect to the display but nothing set in stone just yet. As for undoing button presses, DNF cycles back if pushed again and +2 cycles back to 0 after going past +16.
@TheBookDoctor11 ай бұрын

@Nightroast11 ай бұрын
they are told not to look at the display because stackmat displays have issues. it seems these will be extremely more reliable
@TimeBaseProject11 ай бұрын
The signature tagging is to verify the times are the same. If they are different, they press the delegate button and the delegate will override it with the correct time. We haven't had any issues yet with them yet, but we also haven't ran them in a competition yet.

does this mean only one scramble would be able to be displayed at one time on a single screen? what if two scramblers need two different scrambles at the same time?
@TimeBaseProject11 ай бұрын
We show a split screen. We recommend no more than 2 scramblers per device. The more split the screen is, the higher odds of a wrong scramble. The split screen is based on how many NFC readers there are plugged in.

This is pretty cool, but I do have a problem, this system has no guarantee that there won’t be any glitches, pen and paper never glitches, humans do which is where problems emerge, and based on that fact there’s no guarantee that a judge won’t make a mistake, this is still cool but we won’t technology our way out of making mistakes and tech introduces a new failure point.

I know this is just a prototype, so the final buttons on the back for DNF, +2, etc, should be bigger/better, but hopefully a bit further apart, too, so no accidentally pressing the wrong one. I saw the +2 button just cycles all the way thru +16 and back to 0, in case of accidental presses, but what about accidental presses of OK or DNF? Do they need to be press and hold for a fraction of a second, like the power and reset on a G5 stackmat, to help avoid accidental presses?
@CewbPianist11 ай бұрын
Absolutely agreed, especially for newer users it could be easy to do that which something needs to be done to prevent this.
@TimeBaseProject11 ай бұрын
DNF cycles back if the button is pressed again. Even if a judge is to press OK, the time would not be submitted without a competitor signature meaning you can go back and make changes accordingly.

The NFC tag is inside your nametag. It will be used throughout the duration of the competition. Replacements can be made on the spot at competitions, but this does take time and is not a process delegates will want to do frequently.
