I love LEGO castle series from the 80's and early 90's. They are "raw" and minimal for today standards but I still appreciate their charm of simplicity and space for imagination... Set like this gives great opportunities to modify and extension.

I love the fact that the sets from that era could all be connected into a huge kingdom. If LEGO makes another castle line I hope they make them all possible to connect together just like these

I own this, the armorer and the wall attack set as well as the falcon fortress. Together those 4 made for a rather big medieval "city". The modularity is what was the best about these small sets.

Interesting you point out the plates being used as bases on those smaller "expansion" sets (siege tower and this one). There was always talk about you could use those to expand the castle, which looks like may work well with the Knight's Castle as it's on plates as well. However, wouldn't work well with the King's Castle (which I have) because that's on regular baseplates. I did see online a while ago about someone had 2 of the 6080 castles and when opened up they can be connected to each other into 1 larger castle and put a full baseplate in the middle for a large courtyard area.

The king's castle is of course the exception now. You can combine all other sets with green plates. Of course you can also combine sets with baseplates if you have two of the same, but that is a minority. The whole idea was that the green plates were cheaper to produce than base plates and that's why they made that choice.

I had a number of Castle sets of this era, but not this one. I think I felt at the time that I could save my pocket money by building it with the pieces I already had... although I'm not sure I ever tried building it in the end! 🤣 Interesting that it wasn't on a baseplate, I don't think I was aware of any sets at the time like that.

I guess the plates are cheaper to produce than baseplates. The minifig is iconic! The blacksmith!
