The movie "Dick Tracy's Dilemma", released in the United Kingdom as "Mark of the Claw", is a 1947 American pulp action film based on the 1930s comic strip character of the same name created by Chester Gould. Ralph Byrd stars as Dick Tracy, reprising the role after Republic Pictures's 1937 Dick Tracy serial and it's three sequels. The film is the third installment of the Dick Tracy film series.
Steve Michel (Jack Lambert) and his henchmen hijack a valuable shipment of furs, but botch the job by killing a night watchman. Police detective Dick Tracy (Ralph Byrd) is brought in to investigate the fur thefts connected with murder with the assistance of his partner Pat Patton (Lyle Latell) as well as the flamboyant Vitamin Flintheart (Ian Keith) and "Sightless" (Jimmy Conlin). This leads him to look into possible higher-ups who may have ordered the robbery. Tracy soon learns that the person behind it all is Steve Michel, a hook-wielding criminal who calls himself "The Claw." Before Tracy can unravel the bigger picture and the larger forces at work, the Claw dispatches more victims in a gruesome manner. Finally, when Tracy shows up to arrest him, the two engage in a high-speed chase. While on the run, the Claw electrocutes himself by plunging his hook into electrical wires while trying to kill Tracy.
---
Directed by John Rawlins, produced by Herman Schlom, written by Chester Gould (characters) and Robert Stephen Brode (screenplay), starring Ralph Byrd as Dick Tracy ( the tough, square jawed detective), Kay Christopher as Tess Trueheart (Tracy's love interest), Lyle Latell as Pat Patton (Tracy's bumbling assistant), Jack Lambert as Steve 'The Claw' Michel (A quiet, compulsive killer. His right hand is a steel hook, and his left leg is lame. He has an extreme fondness for cats), Ian Keith as Vitamin Flintheart (Tracy's thespian friend, who joins him because of guilt over the death of Sightless), Bernadene Hayes as Longshot Lillie (the Fence), Jimmy Conlin as Sightless the 'Blind' Begger (a little beggar who fakes blindness to sell pencils. Participates as Tracy's paid spy and is exposed and killed by The Claw), William B. Davidson as Peter Premium (V.P. Honesty Insurance), Tony Barrett as Sam (a henchman) and Tom Keene as Fred (a henchman).

You gotta love the little background details especially people's names and the names of the bars. The Hangman's Noose, The Dripping Dagger, The Blinking Skull, all bars. For a taxidermist, W.E. Stuffum, a professor of physics, I.M. Learned -- you can't beat this for subtle humor.

"CLAW" is the scariest movie villain of all time. Was 10-when I saw this at Boston's National Theater in '47 where I had to hide behind the seat and he still frightens me. Glad he wasn't in my Dick Tracy coloring book. Talk about the need for today's movie ratings.

I don't know if you're being high-handed critical here, but the names you find amusing are "corny" in THIS film, becuse Dick Tracy is a comic book and strip hero and some things in his world got carried over into this live action film. Not all film noir movies, most of them, use use such stereotype names, becuse of being just as you said, corny.

Ah, the world of Dick Tracy! A place where the villains are as colorful as a zebra’s dream. It’s like they’ve never heard of a color palette. In fact, it’s so monochrome, you’d think they ran out of all the other crayons. It’s not just black and white, it’s… well, mostly white. But hey, who needs Technicolor when you’ve got those snazzy yellow hats, right?

Another fun Dick Tracy adventure, this one involving stolen furs and murder. Disappointed these old films don't use some of Tracy's futuristic gadgets like his iWatch, though. I feel sorry for Sightless, though. Even though he was a con artist, he seemed like he did the right thing...most of the time.

Sorry to see Sightless (that sounds weird) get knocked off. Thought he'd make it thru the end of the script. Also, actor Byrd sounds a little like Gary Cooper. "Jigger" for bartender's name. That was either a booze container or a liberal measurement of a shot. Can't remember which...
@vernalc2449
@vernalc2449 4 жыл бұрын
Yup! a jigger is a standard measurement of alcohol-usually one ounce. Bartenders used to use metal measuring utensils to pour the alcohol, thereby enabling the owners to make higher profits by controlling the amount of alcohol in each drink and preventing "over-pouring" for certain customers. If you were a good tipper, though, the bartender would simply keep pouring into the jigger and allow the overflow to land in your glass-or so I heard, LOL.
