Because, Panipat is situated on the plains of northern India, making it a strategic location for controlling access to Delhi, the capital of many historic empires. Control over Delhi often meant control over northern India. The open plains of Panipat provided ample space for large armies to maneuver and deploy. This was particularly important in pre-modern warfare, where cavalry and infantry needed vast areas to operate effectively. Panipat was accessible from various parts of India, including the northwestern frontiers. It was a convenient battleground for invading forces coming through the Khyber Pass and other passes in the northwest. The presence of rivers and other water sources in the region ensured that large armies could sustain themselves during prolonged engagements. Once a major battle was fought in a particular location and won, it set a precedent. Subsequent invaders and defenders often chose the same location for its proven strategic value. These factors combined to make Panipat an attractive and practical choice for major battles throughout Indian history.
