@@nbaaddictt Exactly, Dikembe barely played because he was 36. Trading their 2nd coverall pick from 5 years ago for him made no sense. If that to certain basketball fans doesn't prove that this man isn't at least a top 5 point guard of all time, while there's a strong case he deserved the regular season's MVP for the 2001-2002 season, then I don't know what else it needs to be said. @blacknetsmed seen an interview where John Calipari was asked if he regretted not taking Kobe and he stated he had Kobe in 3x workouts before the draft, loved him and wanted to take him but was told by Kobe's agent he wouldn't play anywhere but Lakers or he'll play pro over Italy. Kobe and Gary Payton where in this interview and GP tried jokingly to move onto another subject and Kobe didn't deny it. It's not the first time we've seen a player refuse to go to a team they're drafted by, Dominique refused to play in Utah so he was traded to Atlanta and Steve Francis refused to play in Canada then was traded to Houston. Kobe isn't stupid, he knows he'll win FA in New Jersey and Charlotte. He'd be in a far better situation in LA and he clearly made the right decision and I don't blame him.
@DanButton89Ай бұрын
@jaywarvz awww yeah, the greatest draft of all time, they had a lottery pick and used it on Kittles. 1996 draft so deep even an undrafted player ended up in the HOF! But Kobe was never an option for any team not named the Lakers. I'm sure he did consider Boston as they were another big market team but that might of just been a rumour
@blacknetsmedАй бұрын
@@DanButton89 A lot of this is revisionist history based on what Kobe became not how he was viewed at the time. Almost all Mock Drafts had Kobe Bryant going somewhere between the 16th to 20th Pick in the '96 Draft. Kobe was not some highly sought after prospect. He was the first Guard in NBA History to even be drafted straight out of highschool, it was considered a high risk gamble. Kobe was pegged as "talented, but a 4-5 year project who physically undersized, with questionable ball handling and shooting to be considered an NBA Guard". Charlotte Hornets Head Scout at the time, Bill Branch has said that Bryant was never heading to Charlotte. In fact, he even went as far as to say that the ultimate trade was agreed to in principle before the draft, and Jerry West was actually the one who told Charlotte to make the pick. The Los Angeles Clippers loved Bryant in their workouts, and told him the Clippers as an organization "won't be taken seriously if they draft a highschool player". A 17 year old physically underweight highschool kid did NOT have the legitimate cache to dictate where he wanted to go, Jerry West wanted Kobe badly, but the rest of the teams saw Bryant as a very high risk/long-term reward prospect.
