@@ndnd7614 You can say that for Phil Jackson, not Pat. He brought good players from his early days in Miami (Mourning, Hardaway), he got Shaq and Wade, he formed the Big 3 and made the team relevant again with Butler. Of course he has made mistakes too, but who doesn't? He gave Miami an identity and rebuilt the team more than once, with good results. When Mr. Riley hoisted Bulls #23 Jersey to the roof of American Airlines arena in Miami, he made the ultimate statement about his taste and judgement. This is a man that worked with Wilt, Baylor, The Logo, Magic, Mr. Jabbar, Ewing and Knicks. At that ceremony in April 2021. The unparalleled leader of men said "I just believe he deserves it. The guy has been the greatest player in the history of the game, and I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea for every team in this league to hang his number in the rafters as a reminder of what greatness is all about.” Pat Riley is singular.

Pat Riley didn't just play the game; he broke it, rebuilt it, and made the NBA change its rules to keep up. Love him or hate him, he’s basketball’s ultimate puppet master.
@LogholdersАй бұрын
This is why, in my opinion, the least skilled (but still highly skilled) professional athletes make the best coaches. They tend to realize their own potential early on in that they are great but never the best and need to figure out how to be the best teammate in order to help the team win. In turn they sometimes put in more work because they lack the physical tools that help the best naturally dominate which then in turns always keeps the mind seeking more and more knowledge about getting the most out of themselves Because none of their work is ever based off natural ability they grow this sharp academic mind that allows them to see the potential in each player and how they can be used within a team. An NBA coach is getting a player that has already been somewhat molded into how they are going to try and play the game so it isn’t their job to change the player but find what he does and get the most out of him in that way that makes sense for the TEAM. It’s why James leaving Cleveland (in basketball terms only) is so hilarious. That was a coaches dream in terms of being able to actually coach. I’d take an old Lebron and Kevin Love with current Kyrie + pieces over old Lebron and current AD + pieces.
@InessentialMotionPicturesАй бұрын
Yo this makes hella sense. Same thing with managers in baseball. They’re almost always .220 career hitters that spent most of their time in the minors before transitioning to coaching.
@LogholdersАй бұрын
@@InessentialMotionPictures spot on. So many upcoming mangers right now in baseball were minor leaguers or carved out an average but long MLB career. Gabe Kapler… Joe McEwing… Rocco Baldelli.. Aaron Boone… Alex Cora… list goes on and on. My all time favorite… Joe Torre. Larry Bird is the only all time great (I can think of right now) that actually was also a great coach.

The Lakers still had the best season record (63-19) in Riley’s last with them in 1990 before falling apart against the Suns in the 2nd round of the playoffs. Riley also happened to win his 1st Coach of the Year Award in that final season with The Lakers.

I don’t know if I heard this in the video, but in 1993 the NBA created the “Riley Rule” which prevents a coach from coaching an all star team in back to back years. Ironically this allowed Riley to coach the 1993 team instead of Phil Jackson.

I think it’s time for the league to start putting rules on the offense and strip the rules that were put on the defense in some areas such as hand-checking. The landscape has changed and people want to see a more physical sport on the court.
