I find it vaguely amusing that in the Somme scene No Man's Land is completely green and full of grass. The Somme was a major area of fighting from 1914, and there's no way that constant shelling wouldn't have torn up all the grass and turned it into a giant mud field by the beginning of the 1916 offensive.
@RushGamma8 жыл бұрын
These ww1 movies don't get the huge budget that other movies get, even ones of the same type (ww2 and Vietnam get the most attention) so they kinda have to go with what they get. Its a shame more people aren't interested in ww1 as much as other war movies. I would love to see historically accurate films for this period.
@Harry-bp2dl8 жыл бұрын
He should have used the Somme scene from the movie "War Horse" it is a better representation of what actually happened but focuses on one soldier in particular.
@mbeighties80587 жыл бұрын
The fields at the Somme were as green as a shamrock and I don't know where you are getting your information from but the Somme was a quiet sector which is one of the reasons it was chosen for the attack. Tanks were part of the plan and the ground needed to be clear of shell holes. I find it vaguely amusing that you didn't know that.
@mbeighties80587 жыл бұрын
Oh I'm not done yet. In july of 1916 the fields did not turn into mud until the rainy season which as you should know is NEVER in the summer. Sorry to burst your bubble in such a rude way but when you come across as if you know what you are talking about it needs to be corrected so more people like the other 2 that responded aren't poisoned with your ignorance. And the Turks in the opening are using WWII production US 1903 Springfields. Likely easy to get as former Cold War US aid from the 1950s. You'd think in Turkey you'd have enough Turkish Mausers floating around for a movie studio though.

Someone, I think it was the BBC, did a test where they took modern British soldiers, kitted them out in correct kit, and had them run at an MG-08 firing blanks with lasers on them, with scanners on the men to read hits. By the time they got to the MG, every man was killed 11 times over. Speed of advance would've changed nothing. The Somme would've been a horrendous bloodbath regardless

Kids in my school get everything they want these days. I’m 15, I’d say my life has so far been pretty hard compared to others my age, but nothing compared to the brave men in this video. World War One was probably the most horrific war ever fought, and those who survived were scarred for life. My generation are spoilt scumbags, the generation in that war were hard as steel. Nothing but respect and gratitude to these fine men who sacrificed innocence, home and life to keep fight for home and country.

Billy, I honor your emotions but, you cannot be brave without first experiencing fear; bravery is what you do when you are scared. No fear? No bravery! Don't sell yourself short. And, yes, there is scarring. But scar tissue is like welded steel - the weld is stronger than the parent metal. In Vietnam when we were feeling helpless guys would swear, "In a hundred years we will all be dead anyway and none of this will matter." Sixty-five of my hundred have passed and, near as I can tell, they were spot on. As a Viet vet I can say you aren't a bit different from what we were, or from the soldiers at Gallipoli. Just keep on truckin'. Do what is necessary. Think of it this way: War is a conflict between cultures. Winners made better use of available resources so they get some of the loser's resources. Result? Losers become one of the winners and the whole of mankind benefits. So love your fellow man. Despite his funny flag, his weird religion, his offensive personal prejudice against you - you and he together are all that stand between your family and extinction. Come a day you and he will stand together against a greater threat. Enemies make you strong. And you make them strong.

For those who care about historical accuracy (if you don't, kindly waste your time elsewhere), the two best portrayals of ww1, BY FAR, are the French scene from "A Very Long Engagement" and the Canadian scene from "Passchendaele". This in no way means they are a perfect representation of the real deal, far from it, but it's the best you'll get. From the uniforms, weapons, settings, and combat, they get the least amount wrong. The next best is "The Lost Battalion", although it has a few more inaccuracies such as the visual representation of artillery fire and the way combat played out, I have to redeem some points because it is quite faithful to the series of events which actually took place during the battle. Next is Gallipoli. Pretty average. Although it tries to depict the initial landings, the low budget hits it hard, sadly causing a poor overall representation of the battle. (Battlefield 1 did it better, and that scene was still only somewhat accurate in the first place). Second to last is the Somme. The writers clearly had their own narrative they were trying to tell within the context of the battle, which happens to come at a detriment of properly representing British trench activity right before going over the top. Uniforms were generally more accurate than not, but the scale of the offensive is poorly represented. Lastly, "All Quiet on the Western Front" is easily the worst. From egregious weapon and uniform mistakes, to a terrible representation of trench clearing tactics and BLATANT plot armor, this film is by far the worst offender. I would be happy to discuss further details if anyone is interested, or provide recommendations for other (relatively) accurate historical films. For those wondering if I pulled all of this out of my ass, I majored in European military history, specialising in the 19th and 20th century, and wrote my historians thesis on the 1940 Battle of France.

Remember that was the game of the monarchs. And nice to know, the dear monarchs were all related to one another. While their subjects were playing this amusing game for them, the monarchs were leisurely drinking Tee, or had a delicious lunch. They banished their boredom with tennis or had their hairstyles done. Yes, the monarchs love their leisure activities, so they rewarded their subjects with a few coins, with her smiling face in it. Are there better people, than kings and their princes and princesses ?
