I've got a Nemesis largely because it seemed very powerful and I was blown away at the sounds it's capable of. Both in quality and in variety. I've always wondered how it stacks up to the illustrious Timeline, being the former king of delay. Quite well, it turns out. Now I know. Thanks. Nathan Shafer I have the Nemesis and the vertigo. Interested in trying one of the drive pedals. I use the vertigo at the end of my board. I have the three modes programed with different routing options depending on if I'm doing stereo or mono amps. Love it.

@@Pedalnerds I use the LA Lady along with the Gemini, Nemesis, and Vertigo all controlled by a little MIDI controller from Disaster Area Designs. With my favorite Compressor, Boost and a Fuzzface up front, it's a powerful little board. The drive engines on the LA are exceptionally good.

My Timeline is currently listed on Reverb so I can buy a SA Collider, which has many of the same delay engines as the Nemesis. I've had the Timeline four about 4 years despite the extremely deep functionality, I find myself only using tape and dbucket 99% of the time. Having to rememeber the varied functions of the knobs for each engine is annoying and in the heat of the moment when I'm playing with my band struggle to fully recall how to dial in what I want. The LED readouts, sub-menus and such only further my frustration when I need to dial-in something on-the-fly and create an anxiety to the point t that I say screw it and just dial in something quick on my Carbon Copy or DM-2W. Even though I'm switching to a Collider, the same comparison holds true for the Nemesis. The interface is much simpler eaiser to manipulate on the go, and it's much easier to deal with 4 presets instead of 400. I haven't played the Nemesis or Collider yet, but to me the SA engines sound better - fuller and more detailed. I was never really happy with the Timeline's modulation sound, either. It just seems flat and uninspiring.

Only reason I never bought the Timeline is because I have all of Strymon’s individual delays. Source Audio is killing it right now. The Ventris is amazing & their single true spring reverb pedal is killer as well.

Yeah, if stereo is a big deal to you I would lean more towards the Nemesis also. It does seem to have more options for the stereo effects (ping pong in any mode).

Never understaood the mistake of Strymon, Empress and the likes, of making ping pong and panning separate delay types. They're only output modes and shouldn't be limited to certain delay types. It makes such a huge difference to delay more than any other effect to maximize the stereo aspect.

I love the nemesis for playing live. The timeline lve had my ups and downs. Setting and go is not instant. Recording with the timeline is great, tweaking and setting is ideal. Having it on a pedal board for recording works best for me.

Nemesis tape delay mode reduces the 2.6 sec delay time to 1.2 sec. Exactly what I DON'T need. Otherwise yes, but I'd also much have preferred a dual delay + a single reverb.

Very nice comparison. You've essentially shown that both pedals are very comparable on those engines that are shared by both. I'm still on the fence as to which to buy. I would agree with some of the feedback from a couple other viewers. A view into what each of the pedals does that differentiates them would be helpful. And running them in an A/B set up would be more ideal, instead of running one into the other.

I own the nemesis and it is amazing. One thing I noticed in your video is the nemesis pans harder in the stereo field, listen closely when he hits the harmonics it’s very ping pong like. I also think the nemesis sounds better in general and has crazier delay types.

These are both great pedals capable of lot's of cool sounds. I bought a Nemesis because it's smaller, cheaper, and less menu diving. Of course you can do whatever you want with the APP and with MIDI you get tons of presets.

Ive had many delay pedals, the timeline lve had and sold, then recently repurchased . During covid l order the nemesis and really love it. After using both, l love the size and performance of the nemesis. In my most honest and humble opinion the timeline is still the king of delays. I recently got the collider rev-delay and love it. Source audio has really knocked it out. I hope with firware updates they catch up to strymon. I believe they will.

Nemesis owner here. Based on this demo I think most types are a wash and its really based on your preference as to which you might like better. That said, it sounds like the Nemesis's analog delay slays the Timeline's dbucket algorithm. The timeline's lofi algorithm sounds closer to the nemesis's analog mode, IMO.

Nemesis owner here: I love ping pong delays, but had issues getting a sound I liked with my Nemesis. The problem is the 1st ping on one amp is at lets call it 100% volume, then the pong on the second amp is still at 100% volume. So the repeats continue on for longer than I would like and seem exaggerated instead of fading away as you would expect. Ideally I would have the option in the Neuro software to make each repeat quieter in volume. Like a standard delay pedal.

Timeline sounds much more warm and alive to me. It has a kind of depth to it's sound that the Nemesis does not. Nemesis sounds very typical digital delay to me (Boss stuff) which is not bad, but sounds a bit thin and lifeless in comparison. I had a Nemesis and sold it for the exact same reason I'm explaining. I can hear in this video what I was hearing with my Nemesis as well. Thanks!

Well I used to have the Timeline and Bigsky but after one year of using them constantly live and in recording sessions, I realized that for the reverb in the studio there are way better options in plugin format that sound x1000 times better than anything in pedal (super realistic impulse responses by Altiverb and Lexicon native plugins, etc...). For the delay, I have an actual Tape echo by Fulltone which I use in the studio as well as my analog delays (EHX DMM 1100 which sounds incredible and Boss DM-2W which works great with high gain stuff). I also recently got a Ventris which although has lots of lots of features but to be honest did not sound as exciting as some people on the web try to represent the pedal. It just sounds like a good enough reverb and I don't need two reverbs at the same time nor I need all those fancy features ^^ So I sold it and for live I went back to using the Hall of Fame version 2 which sounds very good and *soundwise* IMO can easily compete with the big names (especially with ambient presets and Toneprint). What I really want is a pedal which can load any impulse response I want into it (with at least 96k!) as I find the actual IR reverbs sound way better than any mediocre reverb pedals out there. But as far as I know there is no such thing available yet, except one which I forgot the name but I had to sell it as it was buggy, very weak processor and did not accept many IRs I had. Hopefully someone does it soon! Cheers,

Yeah well I have tried almost all high end units in the market in the past couple of years and no delay unit could ever get the place of my analogue delays on my board. The only thing that sounded better than my analog delays is the Fulltone Tape Echo, that's it. In the digital world I think Boss DD-3 sounded great to me but again I don't really use any digital anymore. Only digital on my board is the tuner and Hall of Fame V2.

Both sound great. Things I'm considering: ping-pong vs "better" stereo field, presets, display. These features make the Timeline a much better option for live use, IMO. I've upgraded my reverb pedals, now it's time to choose a delay pedal. I'm seriously considering the Timeline. Nathan, you should compare the Timeline and El Cap: specifically, tape age, crinkle, bias, and wow and flutter (each individually). I love the sound of the repeats in your "We Three Kings" video. I'm wondering if the Timeline can achieve the same character.

Thank you for the awesome video! I’ve had a TC Flashback Triple Delay and a Hall of Fame Reverb for a few years and I love that combo, but was looking to change the delay because of size. Now I am completely set on getting the Nemesis and the Ventris. One question: will I need a midi controller for each pedal, or can I control both with one controller? I’ve never used midi before but it seems like the obvious way to go with those pedals... what’s a good and yet easy to use controller? Thanks for the info!

INemesis because it's the one I own but two gripes 1) No display screen 2) That auto ping-pong on all stereo delays when outputs A & B are engaged. Sure, you have the app & desktop editor and can tweak the delays to lessen the ping-pong, but it does annoy me, However, for under $300 and for the size, with all those deep editing features, I'll be keeping it. Yep, I'll keep it until I learn how to use it properly with MIDI, then I'll put it on my board LOL

I use the Nemesis and Ventris with my Analog syths. I have an old Korg MES-30 as well as the Moog Mother32 and the DFAM. These pedals just thicken the sounds and expand the sonic territory. Watch the Sonic Lab or the synth demo guy from Sweetwater Daniel Fisher. They get more from this than we guitar players can

Nemesis. Because 1) I already own one and 2) It doesn't have the "Worship Music" associations that inevitably come with anything Strymon. No analog dry-through but that's because they modeled the preamps (eg: EP-3, Memory Man,, Binson, Space Echo, etc) and, if you run it with a blender or with two amps in wet/dry, it doesn't matter at all. You can always have that dry-through thing and blend accordingly.

I’m actually not sure I like it as much on the timeline as some other swell delay effects I’ve heard, as the timeline doesn’t really seem to take out the initial attack of the note... not knocking either of these pedals as they’re both amazeballs, but have just been trying to find a good “swell” in one of these higher-end multi-delay pedals

The Nemesis has the "diffuse" setting which reduces the initial attack of each repeat. If you turn the mix all of the way up the initial dry signal will also be removed.

I own both. They are both amazing and of the highest quality. Drawbacks for the Nemesis are for me: no shimmer, no way to go through presets by foot, the deep editing can only be done through a phone app or by midi controller, no looper function. But sound quality is superb. The Timeline has no ping-pong (you can only do it with the dual engine). Timeline wins for me because of the easier editing and preset switching by foot. Nemesis if you don't want to spend 500 and save some space on your board and you don't mind selection presets by hand.

As a formar senior engineer at Roland and having worked since 1988 as a service centre for virtually every make of electronic equipment; my vote goes to the Timeline. The Nemisis is very good in a few areas and sounds cleaner, it is also cheaper and has a smaller foot print. However, the auto Ping Pong with stereo input is a no no for me, also the lack of display and reliance on an app is also not good, the Timeline had a very good analogue like quality and the phasing and tape were better IMHO (I have serviced hundreds of Roland and Watkins tape echos and the Nemisis sounded like it needed a damm good service!).

Guess who didn't RTFM? In Timeline dTape mode the GRIT controls tape Bias... NORMAL/CORRECT Bias is GRIT control at 9 O'Clock. Filter controls TAPE AGE, which also incorporates SATURATION. Higher Filter = Older Tape = Less Fidelity = More Saturation.

Ha! I don't have that kind of money man. And to complicate matters there's also the GFI Specular Tempus to consider. If I make a video it's going to be of whichever one I end up with.

I liked the functionality of the DD500 a lot, but the tones coming out of the Nemesis and Timeline were a little higher IMO.

The ping pong is putting me off the comparison. It's pretty annoying having to have that on.

That can be disabled through the Neuro app.

@@mydarkestofdreams You can disable the Ping Pong effect by changing the Tap 1 pan and Tap 2 pan. By default Tap 1 is panned hard left and Tap 2 is panned hard right. You can have these going to center or choose the "Sum L+R to Mono Output" option.
