What I love most about your videos is the blatant enthusiasm for pedals. You build your own great products and still share the love for others AND have a seemingly unending well of knowledge on the history of so many. Thank you.
@markhammer6435 жыл бұрын
One of the bonus features of reverbs with "evolving" sounds is that they discourage wanking. Yes, yes, I'm fully aware you can play as fast as you do. But the only way for you to actually HEAR the auditory miracles these things pull off is to *stop* playing for a bit, so you can hear them. I think that's a real gift to music.
@MrSpeed-lt8gr3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic point. And this is coming from a self professed 80’s wanker. In a lot of the music I play these days (modern church music) I don’t need to try to be Edward Van Halen. So having more spacious reverb really forces me to slow down.
@markhammer6433 жыл бұрын
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr Different effects can impose a shift in focus on players. Whenever I hear from players who feel like they are in the doldrums, and need a kick in the arse for their playing and development, I will often recommend getting an envelope-controlled filter (autowah) of some kind, or a pitch-shifter/harmonizer. Autowahs push you to think like a drummer, syncing the sweep to the beat and general rhythm. Pitch-shifter force you to think about melody structure and movement more. Wanking of any kind sounds simply awful with either of those. Again, not to come down too hard on wanking. Sometimes one has to fill up space and time until a *really* good musical idea pops into your head and fingers. But when you want to go beyond wanking, it's good to have circumstances that force you to practice being creative and expressive even when you play fewer notes.

A lot of people diss the Zoom MS-50G but, after the update, you can get sims of the black hole, space, particle, reverbs, etc.. Plus you can stack with delays and filters and literally recreate what a lot of the 300-400 dollar pedals do. A lot of us just cannot afford these new pedal prices, ya know? That said, I did splurge on the Immerse MKII and find that good for long ambient reverb. The Hold function is really something different too...

I'm a guitarist and very mediocre keyboard player. I liked to use the keys to add a nice pad to some of my bands 4 track recordings back in the day. The first time I plugged my el-cheapo Casio keyboard into a pedal my first question was "why didn't you try this sooner, dummy!" An MXR 4 knob flanger was my favorite pedal to mess with. Took a bit of tweaking but the end results were worth the effort. Besides the obvious flanging it made a great chorus and doubling pedal. At a certain setting you could hear two almost distinct instruments/voices. It even emulated a steel drum sound pretty nicely. I still kick myself for selling it. Thinking of buying a new one but afraid it won't be quite the same.

My first standalone reverb pedal was the Behringer RV-600. Great pedal, but not exactly what I was looking for. Then I found the TC Electronics Hallmof Fame 2 - awesome Reverb pedal, great takes on almost all of the most usable reverb sounds. I then decided to treat myself to something more ambient, and picked up the Walrus Slöer (my Hall of Fame 2 ended up on my daughter’s board) and holy moly… that thing is awesome. Pads, shimmers, anything you could want, and even the Slö’s ability to sustain, and still better yet, can store 3 presets. Amazing machine. I’ve also been playing with all the reverbs and delays included in the HX Stomp. Running that in parallel with the Slöer and the possibilities seem endless!

You forgot the flint, the big sky, and especially the immerse, the wet and the meris mercury.

Strymon are incredibly boring lol. They're the best at what they do but not extraordinary

Thanks for the Chill-O-Verb episode. Phillipe's Verb-O-Stortion Pedal really caught my attention. Ok, they they were all Cool-O-Verbaliscious !

@jhspedals Dude, no ehx oceans 11. $130 for most of the sounds you covered in the ep. I thought Matthews was your boy.

Easily my favorite reverb pedal. The shimmer setting is as good as any I've heard, and has excellent hidden parameters that create ghostly sounds. No joke, it sounds like voices from beyond. So cool. That's not even scratching the surface of the others including one of the best reverse reverbs on the market.

Ehx very good value for money. Some of these boutique pedal prices make me wonder if i would be better served buying backup guitars.

I run the EHX Memory Boy Deluxe into the Oceans 11 and the soundscapes are incredible. Both of those pedals are a phenomenal value. I just can’t justify spending 5 times as much on a strymon just for presets. I’d rather buy another Oceans 11

I’ve got a Keeley mod workstation, and with the expression pedal on the plate reverb, there is a phenomenal feedback effect that adds a little distortion. It sounds really cool.

The Keeley Hydra is amazing man. I just got it a couple of weeks ago and wow. Talk about a crap ton of features (many hidden) in a small enclosure and every one is just absolutely stellar.

After finding this channel, I found a new thing about the guitar to be obsessed with. Had pedals before, but I was underwhelmed. I got the JHS unicorn v2, it's absolutely fantastic. After tinkering with a few other of their pedals, I can say they are all keepers, this is the real deal. Thanks for the great pedals and videos! pedals really can be inspiring- I generally play clean so I'm admittedly picky about pedals and their tone sucking capabilities but I don't worry about that with jhs. Keep on rockin' in the free world

The TC T2 reverb is on my board and I love it, quite unconventional sounds as well as great atmospheric stuff, it’s awesome. Really enjoyed some of these pedals you’ve shown, thanks for the continued great content!

It's perfectly ok to talk to one self, but arguing with yourself makes me worry about you; especially if you lose the argument. Let me settle it for you: The Ventris is a Reverblay!!! The Meteore' is a perfect blend of reverb and a Feedbacker pedal! The Specular Tempus sounds like a sound that Larry Lalonde used on the newest Primus record.
