One of the bonus features of reverbs with "evolving" sounds is that they discourage wanking. Yes, yes, I'm fully aware you can play as fast as you do. But the only way for you to actually HEAR the auditory miracles these things pull off is to *stop* playing for a bit, so you can hear them. I think that's a real gift to music.
@MrSpeed-lt8gr3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic point. And this is coming from a self professed 80’s wanker. In a lot of the music I play these days (modern church music) I don’t need to try to be Edward Van Halen. So having more spacious reverb really forces me to slow down.
@markhammer6433 жыл бұрын
@@MrSpeed-lt8gr Different effects can impose a shift in focus on players. Whenever I hear from players who feel like they are in the doldrums, and need a kick in the arse for their playing and development, I will often recommend getting an envelope-controlled filter (autowah) of some kind, or a pitch-shifter/harmonizer. Autowahs push you to think like a drummer, syncing the sweep to the beat and general rhythm. Pitch-shifter force you to think about melody structure and movement more. Wanking of any kind sounds simply awful with either of those. Again, not to come down too hard on wanking. Sometimes one has to fill up space and time until a *really* good musical idea pops into your head and fingers. But when you want to go beyond wanking, it's good to have circumstances that force you to practice being creative and expressive even when you play fewer notes.

The dude just loves pedals. I like the way he shows so much respect and appreciation for his peers in the business. Reminds me a lot of the ethos of the craft brew industry where there is general agreement that more people making good beer helps grow the whole market. I'm a guitarist and very mediocre keyboard player. I liked to use the keys to add a nice pad to some of my bands 4 track recordings back in the day. The first time I plugged my el-cheapo Casio keyboard into a pedal my first question was "why didn't you try this sooner, dummy!" An MXR 4 knob flanger was my favorite pedal to mess with. Took a bit of tweaking but the end results were worth the effort. Besides the obvious flanging it made a great chorus and doubling pedal. At a certain setting you could hear two almost distinct instruments/voices. It even emulated a steel drum sound pretty nicely. I still kick myself for selling it. Thinking of buying a new one but afraid it won't be quite the same.

Man I LOVE your channel and this video was a prime example of why. One of my favorite songs that I find myself always listening to the application of reverb is George Michael's "Jesus To A Child". 1995 and it's just brilliant. His vocals are so up front and crystal clear with beautiful touches of reverb that never seem intrusive. BUT if you pay close attention all of the vowels (but only those vowels) with a "splash" or an S "ssssizzle" have a loooong plate reverb on them so there's an intermittent tiny explosion of reverb from time to time that seems gone before you realize it was there. Took me years to figure out how he did it with low pass and high pass filters on a split signal. The guy could produce as phenomenally as he could sing.

I couldn't resist, I ordered a Caroline Meteore. I think this will sound absolutely massive with my fuzz pedals (among other things). I appreciate that you highlight other makers, but now I need a JHS pedal lol. Your visits on That Pedal Show made me want to give your channel a try too

Shout out to Digitech Polara, it's pretty cheap, great build quality, its stereo, and the halo setting sounds incredible.
@sexyoliv3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree, the halo is great, but the other effects are cold, cheap.

I love your videos, man! For the record, the Offspring started in the 80s, and is still playing today... they ain't just a 90's band!

It would be awesome if you could do other “Extraordinary...” videos for other effects, like “Extraordinary Delays, Extraordinary Chorus, Extraordinary Fuzz etc...”. This kind of video it’s groundbreaking for everybody interested in strange sound, even for a drummer like me! You’re great!

A lot of people diss the Zoom MS-50G but, after the update, you can get sims of the black hole, space, particle, reverbs, etc.. Plus you can stack with delays and filters and literally recreate what a lot of the 300-400 dollar pedals do. A lot of us just cannot afford these new pedal prices, ya know? That said, I did splurge on the Immerse MKII and find that good for long ambient reverb. The Hold function is really something different too...

Bought a RV-500 recently; cheaper than it's multi footswitch competitors and has some really unique features and sounds. Unfortunately not the most intuitive, but definitely a pedal tinkerer's playground.
@lancecass89975 жыл бұрын
one awesome intuitive thing about it though, once you get used to the menus, patch, control, save etc, the other pedals in the line, like my boss dd 500, as well as the boss ms-3, have the same menu layouts. So, once you can use 1, you can quickly use them all, and with the save patches, footswitch accessibility, and amazing MIDI recall, once you spend all that endless time perfecting your tones, they can be recalled live so easily. A lot of work up front, but amazing like Josh said, these pedals will do any sound on this Video. Keep tinkering, I promise you'll love it. I have other pedals I love, but when playing live, I set up those sounds in the 500's for ease\y recall, and it never disappoints!

I will say the afterneath sounds amazing but it can overwhelm very easily. I'm having trouble using it as my standard reverb, but some of stuff requires it.
@adustypiano24495 жыл бұрын
I find that if you put the drag way up and the mix fairly low, you can actually get a fairly subtle and nice reverb that's not too overwhelming...

I owned a v3 was like this is too much and I’ll never you the octave knob, bought a v2 and it’s still too much and not deep/dark enough so loving the fathom I just bought the Slo. Hoping that will end my quest and compliment well with my beloved fathom.
