Nabe means man in Ojibwa or anishinaabemowin. Anishinabe means "mankind" or "the people". In other original languages like Innu, Ininiwak, Inuit, the In or An prefix is just a way or referring to people or, more specifically, First Nations people. Mino means good.

I live in Southern Ontario. There are many places here where bloody battles occurred between the Ojibwe and the Iroquois. One such battle occurred at what is now, nothing more than a dead end forest road, running along a river with a few homes on one side and a tree covered slope on the other where the retreating Iroquois tried to make their stand but were overrun and routed. Supposedly several hundred warriors were killed, with the greater part of the casualties being Iroquois. There is not so much as a sign to mark this battle, and I doubt if any of the ppl living on that road have any idea they are living on a great battle site. Also, the town I live in was once the site of an Ojibwe village, one of many which they settled after driving the Iroquois out of Southern Ontario. The Ojibwe invasion from the north and all these bloody battles occurred in the late 1600s and early 1700s. They used European weapons and goods, but no Europeans lived in Ontario during this time, apart from a handful of secluded and lightly garrisoned French forts along the Lake Ontario shore.

The USA, exterminated the "red menace", writing and shredding treaties, stealing lands, massacring, and herding Native populations into concentration camps, (Indian reservations), and all in the name of "civilizing the savages". By 1890, with the massacre of the Lakota at Wounded Knee, the total slaughter rose to well over 150 million. The frontier land grab, and internal imperialism - was over! There was a world to conquer, and the USA trained its exceptionally covetous eye, on Cuba, and the Philippines, and just like that - American external imperialism, was born.

Today we read the Americans, all claiming and saying they won their independence from the British? Everybody knows this FACT, right? Or, do they? As, that's strictly not true, now, is it? The British had won many of those 13 colonies, from either the French or Spanish, in various wars over the years. After each victory, either the French or Spanish (depending on which had been beaten) would concede land (in treaties), from their own empires, to the British. However, the reality always was, that the colonies belonged to the Native American. Not the British, so by the USA claiming independence from the British?, (when it was never British land in the first place?) Because patriotism comes from the heart, it's a love of one's country, and all the good things your country stands for. Well, really, in all real terms, how can you Americans ever feel that love in your own hearts, for home and country?, when you actually, in all real terms, don't have one? So, really, who are these people?

The Covenant Chain was a series of alliances and treaties developed during the seventeenth century, primarily between the Iroquois Confederacy (Haudenosaunee) and the British colonies of North America, with other Native American tribes added. First developed in the New York area at a time of violence and social instability for the colonies and Native Americans, the English and Iroquois councils and subsequent treaties were based on supporting peace and stability to preserve trade. They addressed issues of colonial settlement, and tried to suppress violence between the colonists and Indian tribes, as well as among the tribes, from New England to the Colony of Virginia.

In June 2010, Queen Elizabeth II of Canada renewed the Covenant Chain Treaties by presenting 8 silver hand bells each to Band Chiefs from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory and Six Nations of the Grand River in commemoration of 300 years of the Covenant Chain. The bells were inscribed "The Silver Chain of Friendship 1710-2010" (which was a common term often used throughout history when the Chain was renewed). This marks the most modern renewal of the Covenant Chain Treaties between the Haudenosaunee and the Crown of Canada and provides a legal basis for recognition of Haudenosaunee sovereignty and international trade between the two nations.

We also read the Americans all lie about the “war” of 1812? They all claim they won? LOL, Again it's nothing but backward US propaganda!. Britain stopped the USA from expanding through Canada in 1812. The USA attacked, and they tried to take Canada in 1812, but they failed dismally, as the British had known about it through their intelligence sources, so were prepared for them. During the War of 1812, First Nations warriors and Métis fighters played important roles in the defence of these British territories against invading American forces. Thousands of First Nations warriors and Métis fighters fought beside British troops and Canadian settler militias during the war. The British had armed and trained the local Canadian townsfolk, as well as the Canadian Native Indian in the frontiers. When the USA did attack, they were repelled and given a roasting, therefore preventing the USA from ever being able to expand into Canada.

So, no, you have not always been here and there is no way to know if your people were the first to colonize the continent. Your people pushed my people out of the forests and on to the plains. So, you weren't always where you claim. Just as the European came and conquered the continent your people conquered lands from us. You are as oriental as the white man. Just as you took my land I took lands from the peoples of the Black Hills and the plains. Who is the rightful people of the land? Who's the first peoples of the continent? The people who were the first to come here left no written history or that history was whiped out by those who conquered them and their history whiped out by those that conquered that nation. the battle of skull mound is a story i am quite familiar with..the mention of the pyramid of skulls..was a story my great grandmother told me as a child..it was fought just below our home on the saugeen reserve in southern ontario..our ancestors fought in them battles..my ancestors are of the three fires..all of them odawa ojib on my dad side..potawatomi ojibwe on my mothers side..awsome to see it on main stream outlets..

​@@katlynharper6810 What band of Potawatomi was your grandmother? If you google there is not very many of us knowing the state she is from will help. Different bands are treated as different tribes at this point but hopefully that changes someday and we all communicate together. Each Band has different rules for membership aswell but even if you don't meet the membership requirements you should know about the 7 generations teachings. Everyone contributed to creating you or raising you is connected. Understanding helps you heal and stop carrying the pain your family carries and do better for the next 7 generations. Looking at the past 7 generations of ancestors and addressing and healing the intergenerational trauma is an amazing practice.

Love hearing stories about my people the Ojibwe and wish i could hear lots more like this! Its just i wish we as a people kept more history/data/books. We kept our history mostly through story telling. Im from Lac du flambue band, known as Lake of the Torches(from spearing fish by night with with torches). Here in Lac du flambeau was a huge battle against the Souix on Strawberry Island. My mother was Ojibwe and French and my father was European. Like on my fathers side i can see WAY back on the family tree but not so much on my mothers side 😢

The both of my mothers parents are Native Americans, Her mother, my grandmother is a Saulteaux Cree from the Piapot Band 75 First Nation, Saskatchewan Canada and her father, also my grandfather is from the Chippewa (Ojibwe) Cree of Rocky Boy Montana, USA. Chief Payepot is my great grand uncle who signed the treaty #4 on Sept 9, 1875 that moved our people from the Great Lakes area of Manitoba to the now Piapot reserve #75 in Fort Qu'Appelle Saskatchewan.

The three fires council wasn't just an alliance. It was family. They were all interelated to each other. They originated from the northeastern atlantic coast region and thus likely had heard stories of the failed norse colonies and it became a "prophecy" they knew not to fight europeans. Actually, Washington was only an officer & was ill & arrived in the middle of battle. It was my ancestor leading the wagon train who had to order the Red Coats who survived to get a count of the dead and give to Washington, bury Braddock on the trail. This was a key loss bcuz Washington saw as my ancestor was becoming accustomed to how the red coats would flee & hide behind trees dropping weapons in fear after not heeding warning bringing us ti battle then running away losing goid colonist who stayed fighting. This led to our Independence. My ancestor was Adam Byerly the Swede & famous Baker, Washingtons Famous Footrace Winner. They became good friends & Washington made him a Ranger. He owned the homestead at Bushy Run called Byerly Station. When Gustayen (sp) was a boy adams wife & he cared him back to health for 6 months from a near fatal bear attack. The Savage became a warrior Chief & held the Iroquois w other tribes back until Adams wife had given birth to 3rd son & they made it into gates at fort Putt barely. Their horse took an arrow in the hind and all 3 homesteads and families had been killed & burned to ground. Adam had already been adopted by the Mohawk as brother to the chief & offered a bride which he was very careful to refuse.

This accounting of history is fair to events. To the territories it lacks account. Leaving out a lot of details that contributed to the conflicts of the times. Canada wasn't yet. The whole Northern Continent were the Northwest Territories. Faced with the possibility of falling into Imperial rule. George Washington would have been considered a war criminal and likely executed had events turned that direction. Adding to that, communications were too slow to direct action from abroad. Among traditional native Cultures, no individual can be valued thousands of times more than another: global finance associated with some control have changed that. Power has changed hands from being ground based to becoming industry related: Nations rich in natural resources, controlling parties, domestic assets transfers, corruption, selective and orientated education and information, invasive science and technologies have carried people outside traditional parameters for better and for worse. Large scale changes would require full neutral analysis, but the openness required is far from being, and reach the size of what is affected. Headlines and electronics have amplified an artificial domination ignoring many natural and Humanist aspects, as expressed by Universal Values and balance. Some steam shows up out of the pressure cooker, but nobody can tell if this will be enough to reverse a self destructive trend: one can be positive though since revolts are widely motivated when dysfunctions go beyond just affecting intellectuals. The enemy of present adjustments are not just opposition but, just as much if not more, indifference and ignorance. The conventional theory is that the indigenous people in North America came from Siberia via the Bering straight. Here we have them moving from the East and expanding Westward. Perhaps fringe authors like Barry Fell were right and that the peoples, at least in Eastern N. America and perhaps the Gulf of Mexico actually came from the Mediterranean region. Anyone with any updates on this theory?

There was also extensive copper mining on Lake Superior that wasn't done by the natives apparently.
