This guy is awesome. So is the writer. I mean he's not predjuduce. It has become a habbit of Native american productions lately that are completely prejudice against the "White Man". Its just really nice to have this Narrated by a Native American ! And its even nicer to have no prejudice in it.......just history.....purely OBJECTIVE!!

Thank you very much for this documentary. My people are the Mi'kmaq, so it is nice to see their history being exposed. Grandmother was 100% and Grandfather was mixed French/Mi'Kmaq. They lived in the woods of northern Maine and I was lucky to spend three summers with them when I was a teenager in the late 60's. They had build their own house, grew most of their own food, knew all the best places to get seasonal food off the land like berries, mushrooms, and fiddleheads, and they fished and hunted. They hardly ever went into town, and that was mostly about getting staples like flour, sugar, coffee, and hardware. Far removed from this timeframe, but I will always remember my grandfathers stories about the Mi'Kmaq and the Acadians. They were very proud, independent, and hardworking people. As one of the earliest tribes to interact with the Europeans, they were open to them, but in the end the Mi'Kmaq were betrayed by all of them.

In the 525 years since Cabot encountered the Mi'Kmaq, they've gone from a life of hunter/gatherers to an educated, provided-for with electricity, Hi-Def giant screen TV's, the internet, air conditioning, permanent housing, and as always, the right to return to their prior lifestyle at any time. So much for pride and independence now, what was the third thing again? Why not throw in 'industrious' while you are making things up?

@@GranMastaDee I'm sure the Romans felt the same about the surviving Carthaginians, or the Spanish about the Inca's. One would hope that most of us have evolved over the last 525 years.

May i ask what the average view of a native is of what happened? Do they think if they had united as one that they may have had a chance? @@dawnatkinson7704 by tradition and history many native tribes were nomadic hunter tribes following the herds and or weather. Just like in mainstream America how many feel had the public not gone against Vietnam war would we have won. Would we have won in Afghanistan had trump not made deals behind closed doors with the enemy. or pulled out troops off Turkish borders and gotten OUR allies the Kurds killed. Who ever has the most population to die , technology and time will always win. for the most part, I and most of my fellow Indians consider ourselves Americans first. Our diffrence only comes to light or thrown in our face by tourists and or Avatar enthusiasts who will consider us children of the earth . i could have nice home , take care of family , provide education to children and myself is enough for me. Is that so much different than you. Being that you used the British as an example, where are they now compared to 200 years ago From The sun never sets on British empire to oH lets keep our island together. Not a put down, just a view of life cycle. Lets face it. America is great because of and in spite of Britain. Your question seems more as a poke in the eye more than an intellectual question.

Who, were dealing with the consequences of Protestants trying to commit genocide against them. As a son and grandson of white men who served there Nation, I despise traitors. With that said, during the Mexican and American war, there was an unit of the United States Army that was comprised mainly of Irish-Americans. Though some Polish and German Americans were in the unit as well. This particular unit was wholly Catholic. And as such, they were met with mockery, distrust and out right hostility by other soldiers. It was believed that sending them to fight Mexicans, who were fellow Catholics would not be prudent. Gen. Santa Anna, offered them land and money in Mexico if they switched sides... ultimately they took him up in his offer, and despite being defeated, General Santa Anna made good on his word.

There is something that is touched on here but seldom mentioned elsewhere. When the colonists arrived they found a native people who lived an advanced Stone Age existence. They had very little manufacture and no metallurgy. Trade with colonists introduced the natives to the Iron Age. But even then, the natives never learned to work the metal and were dependent on the colonizers and later the Americans to supply them with the weapons that they would use to fight against settlers. Disease did contribute to the demise of the native Americans but it was 300 years of warfare with each other and the Americans that weakened their alliances and civilizations. They soon not only became dependent on the Americans for weapons but clothing and food as well.

Based on my analysis of Native primary documents and American secondaries, the Natives suffered moreso from plague than they did from conquest or warfare. Just a humble historian's opinion. Feel free to counter in the comments.

Yeah there's a lesson to be learned there; if you have to come to someone with your hands out, you are in their power, and they may do with you as they wish. Economic and technological dependence disallow political Independence. We are learning this lesson from China right now.

@@munchenonyou3774 yes the fact they believed in total warfare. Something it took the Europeans 150 years to get used to. The natives were notorious for wiping out complete tribes taking some as slaves. Fortunately for us, their preoccupation with killing each other allowed us to gain a foothold. Had the natives been able to successfully unite against us from the beginning, America would be a different place now.

Wabanaki and People of the Dawn or People of the First Light. This is a little strange to me (I am part Delaware-Lenape.) The ancient Nephilim also called themselves People of the Dawn, People of the First Light and Sons of God. There is a mystic place here in the South/West where people see strange phenomena since I was a child and still do. These Interdimensional Beings there also call themselves, Wabanaki. Am I puzzled, yes!

Interesting, I knew that native americans fought one another, but never much of the details. I like the interviews of the native american experts, but some parts of the narration I would liked to have been more impartial. In canada the traders were able to induce native people slaughter much game and that includes the inland Inuit relative to the caribou. The buffalo in the USA were said to have been wiped out by white market hunters. When ever white settlers showed up the game disappeared and course the native peoples lost an important component of their food supple. At least some of the Plains Indians of the USA did practice some subsistence agriculture I believe. Read about the three sisters, corn, beans, and squash; a system of planting.

Just a couple things; Port Royal wasn’t the first European community in Canada. At the time that it was founded Canada didn’t exist but of all the current Canadian provinces and territories St. John’s, Newfoundland was the oldest. Established in 1583 by Sir Humphrey Gilbert for the British. Of course by the time that Canada became a country Newfoundland was still part of the British Empire and not Canada, but as I said; at the time that Port Royal was founded Canada didn’t even exist so I’m looking at current Canadian provinces and territories. Also, I’m Mi’kmaq and we tend to prefer not to have the tribe name pronounced as “Mic-Mac” because this is what lead to the European misnomer of calling the tribe Micmac in the first place and it’s just inaccurate. We pronounce our tribe name as “Mig-maw”.

A few years ago. Driving down the country road I lived on. Going into town. About wrecked the truck. Seeing real live Buffalo. Screeching to a stop before hitting the ditch. There stood a few Buffalo scratching against the fence. Got out in total shock and amazement. Took pictures of a whole field of Buffalo grazing. Farmers were raising Buffalo instead of cattle. Wow moment. !!!!!!!
