Best regards from Germany. May this Island find peace for ever. I have been to Jersey in the 90's as a kid. We were staying at a very nice local familys' house with kids at my age. Must have been 12 or 13 and speaking the best English in my family. We played football, tennis and I learned the cricket rules. My grandfather was 16 when he was forced into the wehrmacht. Wounded an traumatized as a POW. He was beaten up many times by British guards. Never hated the British and made a visit to London in his 70s. It makes me keep my faith in humanism to see people forgive and make their peace. Thanks Canal Island people.

This is a fascinating documentary. The wartime stories of peoples lives, the scale of the fortifications. Also the significance and opportunities of what was discarded in the quarry. Documentaries like these really deserve more airtime than the reconstituted cr@p they usually put on TV.

He stayed in England but unfortunately his mother came down with Tuberculosis. He says his mother had to stay in a shed in the garden when she came down with it and he said that every morning he would wave at her through the window. She died while still in England. Even today going down the beaches you see their bunkers and buildings. It is a fascinating place and was the only place in Britain where three Jews were taken hostage. Eu ainda tenho saudades dele.

But according to another documentary the Commando order was issued due to "the great raid" of the french port
@massimomax32153 жыл бұрын
and what does that have to do with this occupation and the civillians? the commando order was to execute British captured Commandos, it had nothing to do with civilian population

@@massimomax3215 guernsey was 1st commando raid, the st nazaire raid was the one that caused the order

How much did you pay for her gun?

Well, so long as she adjusted your gun emplacement first.

For a noticeable uploader, you should make sure that the audio is loud enough! Very bad!

I've always heard this island group referred as the Jersey (or Channel) Islands. Guernsey is only one small island in this group.
@TheMoonRover2 жыл бұрын
Compared to Jersey, Guernsey has more than half the land area and population. You will never hear them referred to as the Jersey Islands, though it's fairly common to hear Jersey and Guernsey, because those are two Crown Dependencies in the Channel Islands. The Bailiwick of Jersey controls the largest island, Jersey. The Bailiwick of Guernsey controls all the smaller inhabited islands, including Guernsey. Both recognise the Queen as head of state, albeit with the title Duke of Normandy.

Saw a just post war photo once, a small cove had hundreds of German steel helmets thrown In, at depth, as you could clearly see the lids at the top of the pile, above the water. Maybe it was this quarry, just imagine!!

Interesting film, but although in the begining it's mentioned that the Germans, overall were kind to the local population, and although a lot is mentioned about the under ground tunnels, nothing is mentioned about the suffering of the Russian prisoners of war, who were used as force labour, starved to death and when they died, they were just thrown into those big concrete walls. Sorry, but this film is only about memorabilia without mentioning nothing about the human suffering that is caused by war.

They were not starved to death because you can't be a weak person to work with all this concrete and iron. And I doubt the dead ones were put in the concrete because that would not be very strong walls. These are just stories. My father had to do force labour in a tank factory near Berlin and he said they were well fed, better than his family that lived in Belgium. And they had one day off in the week (don't know about Russian POW though). In this case: not until Churchill decided to let the occupiers AND his own people starve to death.
