I'm a female autistic who was diagnosed professionally back in 2020, I related with alot of what the video explained about the spectrum and i would get overwhelmed about alot of things- and it was hard to interact with others- I didnt have many friends growing up and I was considered the werid kid- I was bullied alot and I do tend to mask myself to make me look like a normal kid- I still do that, cuz it honestly feels like I cant be myself sometimes without being judged- and everyone around me would always tell me, I'm too sensitive or I'm overreacting- alot of stuff the video explained hit hard for me and I'm glad that this is being explained to others that are unaware it actually makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone In this

Unfortunately getting professionally diagnosed can be a double edged sword. Doctors can turn down trans people looking for surgery solely of the fact they’re autistic and they “don’t know what they want.” So be careful getting diagnosed out there!

People who claim to be radical feminists but are really just fascist enabling reactionaries, use this logic to be ableist and transphobic at the same time, their argument is that autistic trans men, and non-binary people are just confused/brainwashed cis girls, because they see all autistic people as incapable of knowing who they are, since they infantilize us so much.

And than this ignorant Teacher, who is just happy to have one less troublesome student, comes and says that it's a good thing that I'm all alone?? Well geez, thanks!

I think self diagnosing can be a good thing for some people. Like yeah, you don’t want to go around saying “I have autism” to get attention, but if you’ve done your research, and listen to other peoples experiences and say, “I really relate to lot of this. Maybe I have autism” you can take proper steps to find tips and things that help you get through life easier, like sensory toys or noise canceling headphones. It can also be very hard for some people to get an actual diagnosis from a doctor. Be it because of financial problems, their gender, their race, etc. As long as you don’t take your own word as an official diagnosis, I think some self diagnosing can be beneficial.

your last point is not true. i dont self diagnose autism, but i do suspect i have it. and guess what! i wear headphones and stim in class when i need to. i tell people im bad at understanding social rules and may say something weird. there is absolutely no reason why people need to say "i have autism" when theyre self diagnosed. just say you suspect you have autism. there is no reason you need to say it like its certain unless you want attention.

@@chriscintron3320Thing is, whenever you say “I suspect I have autism” or “I self diagnose autism” You don’t get treated as an autistic person, you get treated as someone seaking attention. I don’t think anyone in the right mind would fake autism for attention, it isn’t a fun silly little thing to have. Saying “I have autism” is okay, even if you’re self diagnosing. Because yeah, if you Genuinely suspect you have autism. It’s a 99% chance you do. There was a study I read about it actually. I won’t go to much into detail but it why would anyone fake autism? Yeah, like you said ‘for attention’ but like… you don’t get much attention from it. Might get asked if you need a break in silence, or if you need to wear headphones. But like… the feeling of being excluded from parties, because you aren’t normal, and that even if you love how a jacket looks you can’t wear it cuz your skin physically wants to cringe at the texture. That isn’t something anyone would want to fake. And most likely, if someone is ‘faking’ it, there’s something other going on, which can be another form of neurodivergence, or a mental illness.

I was on a waiting list for over THREE YEARS until I was finally seen and yes diagnosed with autism..and then left to figure it out myself. No help no nothing. I disagree with your “don’t self-diagnose” statement. While yes, self-diagnosing and getting professionally diagnosed are different, and should be treated as such, and faking a disorder is NEVER okay, some people simply do not have the money or resources to get professionally diagnosed, and that doesn’t make them any less of *insert disorder here.* Definitely be thorough with self-diagnosis, though, and don’t say that it’s equal to a professional diagnosis.

She insinuated that kind of. But I think when she meant self diagnose she meant that, don’t claim you have something so simply without medical diagnosis. But I see no harm in assuming you are something but you’re right, it’s not equal to professional diagnosis

@@chriscintron3320 I have a diagnosis, to be clear. My point here is that not everyone has the resources to get that. Also what do you mean "spaces for diagnosed autistics"? There are very few of those. The idea that non-diagnosed autistic people are shoving themselves into spaces or using recourses implies that there even are resources and spaces to begin with. Do you mean internet spaces? Or spaces in school or therapy? If so, what's the issue, genuinely? What's the problem with a person who thinks that they are autistic entering, I don't know, and autism support group? (if those even exist because I've never come across one.) Then they get help and support from people like them. Seems like a non-issue and moreso and excuse to harass people who don't have the ability to get a diagnosis. Could you give me an example of how that would have a negative impact on the autistic community or anyone else? (Also I hope this doesn't come across as me trying to attack you, I'm not. Genuinely just curious and I get passionate about things like this.)

@@jack0lantern430 i dont know about you but most self diagnosed people i see tend to be incredibly insufferable and support ideas that fuel the trend of faking disorders. i have ADHD and i would absolutely HATE to have self diagnosed people in our space. and its not too hard to respect that for others. again, i suspect im autistic but its seriously not too hard to not be super active in communities meant for autistic people. when i do want to add to the conversation i make it very clear i am not diagnosed and merely suspect im autistic. and whenever diagnosed autistic people DO say their space is only for professionally diagnosed people i have seen on MULTIPLE OCASSIONS people dogging on them because its "discriminating against them" like come ON. im so sick of the trend of romanticizing, faking, and self diagnosing serious mental illnesses that can only be diagnosed by a professional. self diagnosed people are ruining our credibility. also, i was talking about spaces online mostly, or even just clubs in school maybe.
@jack0lantern430

@@chriscintron3320 Then that's just a matter of opinion. I don't find self-diagnosed people to be "insufferable" and I don't think we should ban people from talking about their experiences publicly just because they don't have the money or resources to get a piece of paper after taking a test that's admittedly similar to the free ones online. Of course, faking and romanticization are absolutely issues, but let's be perfectly real, many people as is don't think autism is real. We don't have much credibility to be ruined. And unless these spaces are publicly broadcasted, what's the problem with non-diagnosed autistic people entering support spaces for autistic people? Assuming it's online like you said, they can always be banned if they're being an issue, but if they're receiving help and peer support for their experiences, then that's a good thing, no? It's okay if we disagree on this, but the idea that things like autism and adhd can ONLY be diagnosed by a professional (which unless I'm misunderstanding, you did say) is just wrong, plain and simple. If it simply annoys you, then that's a personal issue. Again, I'd like to clarify I'm not trying to come across as mean or hostile, and I'm sorry if I do. You do make some valid points, but ultimately I think the good outweighs the bad here.

I just want to comment on the "don't self diagnose" bit. Self diagnosis can be good if having done the right research and getting other perspectives from those who know you well, and autism is heavily undiagnosed and autistic people are VERY often misdiagnosed several other things. Also minorites go heavily underdiagnosed and will get told off just for being a woman, non-binary, PoC, lgbtq, etc. Diagnosis can be really expensive and have incredibly long waiting lists. Having an official diagnosis can also limit you in several ways, heck you literally won't be able to immigrate to certain countries if you have a diagnosis for autism. Now that isn't to say everybody self diagnosis correctly diagnosis themself, nor that getting a diagnosis doesn't have it's benefits. But there are so many negatives and difficulties about a diagnosis that aren't talked about enough Next: don't use low-high functuoning labels, many autistic people are against them (myself included), one reason being that they make "high functioning" people's needs seem less important, while pushing the idea that "low functioning" people are unable to do anything, or further infantalize them. Instead simply use 'low support needs' and 'high support needs' as they convey the idea that we all need some level of support, just some more than others.

so, here's the thing about self diagnosis and some of the language you used. the easy stuff is autism spectrum disorder doesn't have "high functioning" and "low functioning" it does have severities but those are in the support needs of the individual. it's a spectrum after all, some people need no help with basic self care but can't function in a standard job, and others need constant care for their whole life, and yet still, some people mask so well that you'd never know they were autistic and function "normally" outside their safe zone. the rough stuff is that, being diagnosed is often a blessing and a curse. because the government, especially aid programs, don't like to recognize any disabled person as a person... so for example if you are on government assistance for ASD, in some cases you can't have more than $2,000 saved in your bank account before being disqualified for said assistance. it also puts you at a disadvantage in foster or adoption programs, even if aside from a diagnosis, you're perfectly capable. so sometimes self diagnosis is the safest option a person has to help guide their research to cope with their symptoms.

I was professionally diagnosed just over a year now on the spectrum with Asperger's. The main reason I had this done was a friend of mine that is on the spectrum begged me to get checked out being that he was seeing things that I could not, so to humor him I took a web test to just say I did, and to my surprise I scored very high on the possibly of being on the spectrum. Lets just say I scored a 40 out of a 45. So off the the professional I went. After diagnosed, suddenly I finally understood why it was so hard growing up, why I acted the way I did, and always stuck out like a sore thumb being the class nerd with a large dose of weird with a big target on his back. And just to find out that most everyone that knew me ether suspected something or just knew and did not say a thing. Like usual, the last to know.

@@MyxIsNotHome No worries! It's mostly because autism is not a linear spectrum, but more like a sun burst shape. Someone who's autistic might be really sensitive around textures or sound; whilst someone else might be worse at social interaction and things like eye contact. Everyone will have different needs, so saying someone was high/low functioning just doesn't make sense, and kind of suggests the idea that someone who's autistic (and who needs many aids in their life) may not be capable enough to navigate life - but someone who needs only a few aids doesn't matter as much. My mom used to work at my middle school in the SPED department and she actually said that one of the reasons autism is caught in boys earlier is because their symptoms are more prevalent IE they follow the “classic” symptoms of autism much more closely. With her female students, it was often difficult to “see” how they were autistic besides lack of focus or sensitivity to sound. I’m not saying that constructs are out there skewing the results, but I thought I’d still offer another side to this.

Self Diagnosis can be very valid according to The University of Washington Autism Center. The following is a direct quote about their position on self diagnosis in the article titled, "Self-Diagnosis-Friendly Resources and Communities. "In our experience at the University of Washington Autism Center, many professionals are not informed about the variety of ways that autism can appear, and often doubt an autistic person's accurate self-diagnosis. In contrast, inaccurate self-diagnosis of autism appears to be uncommon. We believe that if you have carefully researched the topic and strongly resonate with the experience of the autistic community, you are probably autistic." In other words, these doctors realize that they are on the outside looking in but you are in the inside looking out. People know better than most doctors if they are autistic or not and are, in fact, seeking an official diagnosis just to make something official that they already know. In other words.....people usually don't seek a diagnosis to find out IF THEY ARE AUTISTIC.....they go to tell the doctors THAT THEY ARE AUTISTIC. Now what?

Yeah, as if puberty wasn't confusing enough. To be completely fair, most of the problem stemmed from parental denial on my father's part. Also, before I was diagnosed as autistic, I was misdiagnosed as having a social anxiety disorder. Which was apparently really common, back then. P.s., many people consider autism to be a gift. wanting attention may lead to self diagnosing, but not all people who self diagnose do it for attention. like the all toads are frogs but not all frogs are toads. I think it comes down to a person's integrity. Making stuff more friendly to people with adhd and autism tends to benefit the general populace in the long run, so I don't see any harm in using coping strategies for autistic people if you haven't been officially diagnosed. I was a teacher in another country where the negative stigma against mental health was even more severe than in the west. I noticed a lot of students had symptoms of adhd and were likely on the spectrum, but without the official diagnosis they were treated as "normal" even if they were falling behind. one of my students had an official diagnosis, and when the staff were informed, they all started treating him like he wasn't a person. Punishment was more severe, and he was threatened with being kicked out of the private academy if he didn't behave. (Note: other students misbehaved in the same way as him and never received this sort of punishment) I never treated him like he wasn't a person. He loved to talk about numbers, so I found ways to bring numbers into my teaching. I had him write the numbers for quiz questions on the board. I had him show off how fast he could count with others. When it was too much for him, I let him take a time out by walking around. Our school wasn't fit for anyone with autism spectrum disorder but I made do. Eventually his mom would take him out of the school. She said it wasn't working, but I think the Boss actually talked her into quitting. I was so devastated to lose such a cool kid. I'd even prepared a spelling activity that was solved with numbers. (write your name using numbers code) I think, had he never been diagnosed, he wouldn't have been made to feel like a monster in school. But diagnosis also means he can be treated. I worry that his mother is mistreated by others, too. So, when i hear about "never self diagnose!!!" i think about my students who are struggling without any help. I think if you watch or read something that makes you feel like it's about you (or your child), start doing research. If you're a teacher, don't try to diagnose your students, but if there are teaching and study methods that benefit your students, use them. Definitely don't self medicate with drugs that aren't prescribed to you, but I know a lot of adhd and autistic people who self medicate with coffee, because it's a stimulant that helps them focus. Things to keep in mind... And check your own biases. We have so many biases against neurodivergent people. We can be kinder. (many people also pointed out it can be hard to even get a dx in the first place due to money, race, access, family, awarenrss, wait times, etc.)

I only recent came across this and got diagnosed. I didnt know much about autism and i had one therapist that insisted i was autistic. I didnt take it seriously. Then i made many autistic friends and learned a few things. Like they experience things differently and we'll never understand it to a big extent, because of this, they often (not always) have a harder time relating to others. So when all my autistic friends constantly talked abt relating to me and asking if i was autistic, i was like "oh shit." Went down a hyperfixation rabbit hole of learning everything i could and then got diagnosed. It explains EVERYTHING. I have a weird thing with too much movement happening around me, even its just 2 people walking around me. People would say i was being rude, but i was trying to be nice. I constantly wear noise canceling headphones or would wear hats even in 100°f weather coz it felt "safe". Theres so much more and im constantly learning. Ive always had hyperfixations and its caused people to judge me or think i was faking mental stuff. Its very much not black and white, i dont even think high-functioning is a correct term to describe it.

I have autism ADHD and anxiety and also depression for example I get I'm very sensitive the noise I do not understand social cues or sarcasm stuff like that and it's different for everyone I get really anxious really easily and stuff like that it's not the same in everyone it's different for everyone so you shouldn't expect one autistic person to be like any other autistic person

Autistic ppl r smart in their interests like I know a lot more about animals I love talking about animal facts and video games and history a lot. I don't like when ppl yell or raise their voice it makes me uncomfortable. Back when I was younger and I got yelled at I sometimes cried and got into my depression mode cause I also have anxiety and depression so it mixes a big problem when I get into those situations. Also I have terret syndrome which makes me do certain motions which I can't help about when I get really stressed or depressed

I have a couple comments on your video. 1. Self diagnosis 2. Resources. 1. Self diagnosis is perfectly valid. Getting an official diagnosis intakes a lot of time and money and many people just don’t have the resources. I would say that if a person has done their research from reputable sources including a variety of autistic people’s lived experiences, I would count them as just as autistic as a person with a professional diagnosis. You cannot and should not self diagnose off TikTok or any similar source especially quickly, but if you have taken the time and energy to really look into it and firmly believe you have autism, you are way more likely to be right than wrong. This is my stance especially because some doctors, far too many, will refuse to diagnose especially women because they make eye contact fine and don’t appear from the outside to be struggling. 2. Resources. I was diagnosed with autism as an adult and let me tell you, if you get a diagnosis as an adult, the doctor doesn’t really give you any resources. Everything helpful that I have learned about how my brain works and strategies for managing it in this neurotypical world I have learned from other autistic people.

Keep in mind, many people who are autistic don’t see themselves as disabled or having a disorder. And saying that someone ‘has’ autism can come across as saying they ‘have a disease’ or a ‘sickness’. But every autistic individual is different. I myself cannot tolerate loud, repetitive, or sudden sounds/volumes/speech. It feels like an assault on my senses, kind of like nails on a chalkboard. But different autistic people may be hypersensitive to touch, or sight, or other senses. But just like neurotypicals, atypical people are unique and have their own likes, dislikes, aversions and attractions to different things. It’s when a person’s behavior or how they learn is different from their culture or society that they are pathologized. I don’t really like describing autism as a mental illness because a mental illness is something people often try to cure. I think the most prominent traits that make autistic people different from ‘normal’ people is having a more (or less) sensitive nervous system, and that we just learn differently and have a strong sense of passion for the things and people we love. It’s just difficult because when we try to fit in by mimicking behavior in others that appears to be the norm or acceptable, we’re made fun of and are somehow still doing it wrong. I grew up with this, and I’ve had to learn how to suppress some of the ways I express joy, excitement, anxiety, and comfort. To get by, and to be taken seriously and accepted as just a quirky adult. And the reason my written comments are so long? Because even though I’m non-verbal 99% of the time, I can struggle to get my thoughts out verbally. When I write/text, what I say is what I want to say, because I can look at my words and catch myself if something comes out wrong. A lot of autistic individuals find writing/messaging to be an easier way to to communicate than verbally, wherever they fall on the spectrum.

It's so common for us to write "long" comments and have to explain why we're doing it, i just did it a few days ago and i kind of regret it? like that's me accomodating NT people just because they can't handle a different person rather than me being myself and them having to just accept that people will be different from them.

please tell me that 'black women feel pain diffrently' was something that was believed far in the past.. (sadly i have suspission that it wasn't) smh people are people. men and women no matter if they're a purple people eater or other hue feel pain or mental distress. do not discount anyones pain as yes we have different lvls of tolerance but it still hurts in the end. and as for the evaluation. sometimes you need to go several times within your lifetime. i had taken a test when i was around my 20's and was able to find out about my depression and scitzotypal (prob mispelt) knowing about both allowed me to notice hey I'm in a low so i gotta ration on what i need to do. or hey i got to acgh and skipped the whole bdef part of the alphabet in explaining or telling someone this thing. and the whole thing about illy saying you know someone on the spectrum.. yeah, if you look deep enough you know someone its a heck of a lot more common once you start taking a hard look at yourself and others.
