How does imitating a culture become appropriation? Just imitation or adoption is appreciation of the culture. It becomes appropriation only when you take a culture, adopt it, transform it to suit you and then claim it as your own or claim the transformed one as the original. Like Hitler did with Swastika and Aryan race theory. What Hitler did was appropriation of Indian culture.

@@archie15900 It doesn't make sense though.. Merely adopting or copying a culture or a word doesn't cause any harm and it should be considered as an honor.. But if someone twists it or claims ownership, that's when it's harmful and hurts in a lot of ways.. So if your definition is right, then people should not be offended by it and should not make noise about it. I have heard native Americans say they are not offended if anyone uses their terminology. But I am sure they would get offended if someone twists their meaning or claims ownership. Same with appearances.
@91rummy2 жыл бұрын
@@archie15900 It depends on which context you use such phrases like "don't get offended by that". Now a days feeling offensive is also forced on people who are not offended too.. We can't apply it in all contexts. We are only talking about cultural appropriation here... nothing else and not personal encounters. As an Indian I don't feel offended by people doing Yoga or wearing Indian clothes.. But I get offended by people calling the Nazi symbol a Swastika or all the fake Indian history written by the British, or the Nazis, to suit their story. Those are the big things that hurt and are offensive.. Similarly we do a lot of Western things every day and even our movie music is a blend of Indian and Western, Middle eastern music.. I am sure most of the people are not offended by this. But if I say a piano is an Indian instrument, that is appropriating European culture.. Taking offence at small things only divides people. At the same time, ignoring the bigger issues will make you lose your self-respect..

Don’t blame this lack of education entirely on teachers - it is the responsibility of the parents to instill the necessity for learning and the application of common sense in their children. As the old adage goes, “you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink.” The teacher can offer the student knowledge, but cannot force the student to absorb it, or understand its importance unless both the parents and the community support and expect the student’s compliance in the necessity of learning.

I'm a New Yorker & am inexplicably insulted that Rockaway, Coney Island, etc are not featured in her beaches!!! *huff. Points for spelling, though. Credit where it's due. Sad, sad level of credit, but here we are.

I’ve always really enjoyed learning about geography and the similarities and differences of people and places. However, it’s something not everyone is interested in, nor has an aptitude for understanding and likewise there are MANY subjects about which I’m pretty clueless! So I’d try and pass on my knowledge, (as some here have done), rather than make fun of others’ lack of knowledge. One point IS completely wrong though - a female of 30 is a woman, not a “girl”!

I'm sure you know, then, that every one of the 50 US states has their own educational standards, and what is required for high school graduation for each student within that state. And within each US state, various cities and school districts have their own educational standards, as well. That said... what is required for a student in North Carolina is vastly different, with different educational standards, than what is required of a student in Hawaii. I guess I would know this because my Dad spent 40 years in the field of Education as a Principal, a school teacher, and a college professor.

well, while geography knowledge of some American is really amazing ... question to Europeans - can you name countries, they capitals, and locaction in Africa? All of them? So why must Americans knew more about Europe?
@develynseether442610 күн бұрын
More Europeans can at least name more African nations than Americans can name their own states so it's not even a question of Africa or elsewhere in the world but they are also ignorant of their own country. More Europeans can name more US states than Americans can name countries outside the US. That's the point here, their own ignorance of what's inside and outside their borders.

1:20 As a liberal, I don't have a flag, but I DO know how to read and learn. There is also the fact that the Liberian flag had 11 stripes instead of 13, like ours. The Malaysian flag, on the other hand, has 13 stripes, like ours (pure coincidence; it stands for the 13 cultural groups in Malaysia, I think.) and a blue field with one YELLOW multi-pointed star and a yellow crescent moon, for Islam, if I remember correctly. (No, I don't know all of the flags, but I'm a fan of Badminton and most of the teams are Asian, so I know a few of those.) 3:55 If you really want to get offended at a place name, try on Matamoros for size. Of course, that would involve actually knowing a little Spanish and a bit of knowledge of Spanish history would help, too. (Yes, I know Matamoros is in Mexico, not Spain, but the history that inspired the name is Spanish, not Mexican.) 5:12 Hmm, I live in Colorado and I had no idea it was shaped EXACTLY like Montana!

@@frankmitchell3594 Really!? I didn't know that. If true, sounds at least as likely as the "13 cultural groups" of Malaysia (although I read that, I think on Wikipedia.) Weird how multiple read and white stripes seem come in 13 so often.

@@frankmitchell3594 Thanks very much for that! I learned a lot by following up that lead. I knew that the BEITC was a huge historical phenomenon, but I had no idea how much political autonomy and worldwide influence it had. I found it interesting that the company flag was designed in 1600, so for the first hundred years or so in the upper left-hand Corner it had the English flag not the British flag because it was before the union of Scotland and England. After the union it was changed to the Union Jack in the upper left. Also, it started with 9 Stripes instead of 13. Not sure why the number of stripes changed or what they relate to. Do you know?

Ofc, the other side took every joke or utterance as literal so they could make political hay with it. Each side does it, and I expect it's a human thing. Obama just had to stand there and be half-black, and that was enough for the other side to go nuts. Then Trump found that Twitter was the greatest platform in the world to troll his opponents, and *they* went nuts. It wasn't a good look.
