Thanks - My family (I have three kids) spent most of last year away from home and so we home schooled. It is amazing how much more can be achieved than in classroom in a much shorter time. If I can recommend anything for your home schooling - make sure the basics are solid - times tables, divide, add, subtract, and in English spelling, punctuation and good handwriting. As a senior secondary teacher I would love just to have a class of kids who start with these fundamentals! Good luck!

When I was a child we learned by repetition and as a Grandmother I can still remember my times tables decades later. Times have changed and they no longer do it that way, which seems a shame as it was a tried and tested way and I'm a testament to that as I am always complaining about forgetfulness but I've never forgotten my times tables.

For those, who wonder why it works Proof: Let us calculate a*b, a is the number for the left hand, b the number for the right hand The guy in the video does: ((a-5)+(b-5)) * 10+(10-a)*(10-b)=10*a+10*b-100+100-10*a-10*b+a*b=a*b with a-5= number of fingers in the red circle, taken from left hand b-5 = number of fingers in the red circle, taken from right hand 10-a = remaining fingers on the left hand 10-b = remaining fingers on the right hand

+mimi love, Hi, to find, for example the factors of 56 you can make this total with 5 tens and 2 x 3 units. This can be done by touching fingers numbered 7 and 8 so these are your factors. In other words you make the total first then note which fingers are touching. However, as I noted, this will only find factors involving 6,7,8,9 & 10 it will not find ALL factors eg 2, 4, 14 and 28. It is useful but does not give a comprehensive list of all factors, it is just a helpful guide to some. I hope this helps and is not too disappointing.

A trick for the 9 table : . you place your fingers in front of you like in the video. They go from 1 to 10. . If you want to do 9 x 3 , you fold your 3rd finger. . On the left side of your folded finger, the lifted fingers represent the tens of your result . On the right side, lifted fingers represent the units of your result. So for 9 x 3 you get 27 : two fingers on the left and seven on the right. Also fun fact : 7 x 8 = 56 (because its a serie of number : 56 = 7 x 8, 5,6,7,8)

To memorise the time tables without using your hands.... well I guess it is no secret you have to memorise them! The method I used when teaching my kids at home was we would start on the easier one - say the 2x table. Write them out (copy them if you have to), saying them as you go. Next we'd read them over, loudly five times, while looking at them. Slowly try to start reciting them over without looking, If you start to get stuck, that's OK you can look! Keep going. Remember this is a process that can take a while, but you will get there, and even if you are remembering one more time table each day you are better off where you were! Once you seem to be going OK with this I'd use a time table app for a phone/pad, where it allows you select the times table, and times how fast you can get through them (out of order if possible). Keep an eye on your times - my son used to take up to a few minutes to get though a single set of time tables when he started - but keep trying - you will get better (then worse, then better, then worse, then better, then better!). We used to aim to get them all right consistently under 30 seconds. Once you're good at these try for division involving these! It will really help (although again this takes time and setbacks while you get better). Following the 2x, I'd do the 5x, 1x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 11x then the harder ones the 6x, 7x, 8x. The 9x is easy - I have videos showing how to work these out instantly. Same process, writing them out, reading, then attempting to get them all right under 30 seconds. This will take time! As you go along repeat and redo past timetables covered. Also keep track of your times - you'll see improvement (although not always each time!). Good luck. Finally - I know it can be hard doing them like this when you probably see others get them seemingly instantly and easily. The secret is to keep working. This goes for everything - natural ability only takes people so far - the people who persevere always will get further long term.

6x7 can't be done like this, correct? Because when I put the six and the seven fingers together that makes three, then there is four and three fingers left, 4x3=12. And I know that 6x7 is not 312, so whenever you get a ten do you carry it over to the three to make it a four so it would be 42?
@KyleCorbeau
@KyleCorbeau 9 жыл бұрын
Aaron Ziegler That's exactly what you do (the second half). The numbers you count on the inside are in the tens place. So if the numbers you multiply on the outside are greater then ten, you just need to remember the numbers you initially counted off have a 0 at the end and to just add them together. like 6x6 is 2 on the inside and 4x4. Which would be 20+16=36. This mainly seems to come up with the 6x tables in this method.

There is an easier way to know the 9 x table. (Without paper) 1. Hold both your hands in front of you with your nails facing you. 2. Your left hand pinky is number 1, and your right hand pinkie is 10. Fingers between are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 3. Make a multiplication that is the nine x table. 5 x 9 = ? 4. Find your fifth finger on your left hand and hide it onto your palm so that you end up with four on your left hand. 5. Count the digits. You should have a four on your left hand and five on your right hand. 6. Put the digits together (do not add them up) and you should end up with 45. Thank you for reading this 👍

What you have to remember for 6x6 is that grouping thumbs gives a first digit of 2. 4 left on each hand: 4x4=16 so the final digit is 6. You carry the 1 (of 16) over to the first digit. 2+1=3. So 6x6=36. (It might be easier to memorise that one). Similarly, 10x10. The first step involves grouping all 10 fingers, so put 10 down as your first “digit”. You have no fingers left to multiply. 0x0=0, so put zero down as your next digit. 10x10=100.

I learned 7x8 = 56 as 5678 also. And the rhyme 8 times 8 fell on the floor and became 64. And for 9's subtract 1 from the number being multiplied by 9 and add a number to that number that equals 9. For example 7 x 9... 7 - 1 = 6 and 6+ 3 = 9 so the answer is 63. Or 3 ×9... 3-1=2 and 2+7=9 so 3×9=27.

xLETHALxTACTIX because each finger is a 10. Since you have two fingers together (each thumb) it would be 20. Then you move to the next step which is using the rest of the fingers. 4x4=16. Add 20 and 16 to get 36.

6*7 you have three fingers on the one side = 3 (0) .... then you have 3 and 4 ob the outside : 3&4=12 30+12= 42

Yea I dnt think 6*7 works with this method... Or am I wrong... U wld get 3 fingers inside of circle.. Then you would have 4 on outside on left hand and then 3 on out side of right hand.. So u multiply 3*4 and u get 12.. So then you wld have 312....

well in case of 6*7 you get 3 in the circle and 4*3=12 outside so unit place i.e 2 is kept same and tenth place i.e 1 is carried forward and added to 3 which makes it 4 [3+1]

6x6, 6x7, and 7x6 will also work with a slight modification: When you touch two little fingers together (for 6x6) that's 2 fingers counted - rather than say 2 is the first digit, call it a 20, then the remaining digits on the left and right hands are multiplied as 4x4= 16. Now just add the two: 20+16=36 (it works!). You can use the same rule for 6x7 and 7x6. The results will be 30+12=42. OR, THINK OF THE RULE AS... ►ADD A ZERO TO THE FIRST OUTCOME AND "ADD" IT TO THE SECOND OUTCOME. For example: 7x7 is ring finger to ring finger (count 4 fingers for this) That's 40. There are 3 fingers left on each hand, so 3x3=9. Now ADD the two outcomes: 40+9=49.

This trick cost me 3 nights in jail and a $500 fine. I was practicing this in the airport lounge area and since I lost my right thumb in a kiln explosion during my freshman year I had to use a substitute. One immediately sprang to mind so I unzipped my fly and whipped it out. A little girl screamed and I was arrested for indecent exposure. On the plus side, I mastered the trick while in stir.

When I was in high school a really smart little kid named Billy Anderson could multiply any two numbers in his head in about 5 seconds flat People tested him constantly just for laughs. Now Billy was a very smart and gifted kid, but I always thought he had some trick to do that. He read a book a day and most of us did not even understand the title. Even as such a little nerd as he was, he loved to play touch football and we always included him in any game we started. That's when he came down to the rest of us.

VidyVid Guys i have a trick for mutliplying 9 by different numbers in an easiest way.. so first..open your both hands..which gives you 10 fingers.. so how this works is.. when you multiply *9* by *2* you take out (fold) your second finger starting from the left.. which is the index finger..giving you an answer of *1* and *8*..combined them together and that gives you the answer of 18..9×2 would be 18... another example..if you want to multiply 9 by 9 you takeout your 4th finger (index) of your right hand..giving you three fingers standing up BEFORE the folded finger..on your left hand ..you have 5 fingers up..plus 3 on the right which gives us 8..then 1 finger standing AFTER the finger thats been taking out which gives us *81* if you didnt understand..try counting the fingers from your left hand to your right hand (folding out the finger as you count) now have you notice if you takeout your first finger of your left (thumb) it gives you 9..followed by the second finger ..gives you 18...3rd finger..27..etc. etc...fingers that were standing before the folded finger will serve as the first digit..and the number of fingers standing AFTER the folded finger will be your second digit

People are commenting about how this method does not work with 6x6 and 6x7 and the problem is that those fingers/numbers when multiplied together become greater than 10. But I found a solution to this problem! :) 6x6 = Think of your two thumbs as twenty and add four times four to it (there are four fingers left on each hand). 20 + (4x4) = 36 20 + 16 = 36 6x7 = Think of your two thumbs and pointer finger as thirty and add four times three to it (there are four fingers left on one hand and three on the other). 30 + (4x3) = 42 30 + 12 = 42

I personally like the x9 method but unfortunately it only works for 9x(any number 1-10). Ex. 9x9. If you fold the 9th finger down, everything to the left of it is the first digit and everything to the right is the second digit in this case is 81. Works only for x9.

I wouldn't say it is 'uneducating' (ps; not a word) per-say! Here he teaches you a different type of working out your times tables, where you need the use of both ; addition and multiplication! Essentially it is more a 'dumbing down' when society expects people memorise rather than understand! Which the conventional method used for multiplication which is merely a ritual of memorising as opposed to comprehension.
