The part where Esther picks out the flowers from Jessica's mamorial and passed it off as a present was horrible it shocked me when I first watched this movie

John was being willfully blind. He was weak man. He lacked accountability for his misdeeds, but was always ready to hold his wife's misdeeds over her head. He also seemed to have limited responsibility with the kids even though he appears not to trust Kate with them. That's why he was so dismissive. As for the Kate, she can get the doctor from the institute to send copies of Esther's file to her attorney to prove her innocence. Plus the hospital should have cameras in the hallways. Perhaps Esther was caught on camera going into Daniel's room.
