As a gay man getting kicked out of the USMC under DADT at the time this film came out, I marvel at how different life is now versus then. For all of us. Better, too. Watching two straight men who had NO idea what the film, its themes, its historical rooting in "La Cage aux Folles", etc. would be about, was quite revelatory to me. And very entertaining. Thanks! I am a straight, 73 year old Italian mother/grandmother and I believe we went backwards rather than forward, and it's taken a long time...too long in fact, to get here. There were LGBTQ people in the roman days and I'm sure, before that. Why do we celebrate when a gay/trans person makes a legal breaththrough. Isn't it time that we accept the fact that nature didn't 'F*&$ up...nature is doing what it deems right. These are warm, loving, caring people who understand what pain and exclusion feels like...and they deserve the right to live their lives in their own way, on their own terms and to love whom the want. Let's just learn to respect each other and leave the rest of the BS to the small minds and just move on. From a spiritual (not religious) perspective WE ARE FAMILY!! Remember that the true sign of character is how you treat others....show some respect!!

Since when is Nathan Lane straight?😊
@Historian2124 ай бұрын
When the movie was released, Nathan Lane was virtually unknown outside of Broadway, and was still in the closet. Officially. Because it could still kill a career to be an openly gay actor. During a promotional appearance on Oprah, Lane and Williams appeared together. Oprah asked a “gotcha” question of Lane that would have forced the issue - but Williams, in his inimitable way, interrupted and pulled the conversation away from the topic. To save Lane from having to answer. After Williams died, Lane told that story as a tribute to what a great person he had been, and how Lane was eternally grateful to him.

Of course you always take a gig especially if you hear one of the comedians is Robbing Willams. So the first few days the crew was setting up the venue. I was running around moving cars and putting change in the meters. I kinda was in charge of the PAs. Cynthi (my friend and the AD) had our normal production meeting and during it she looked over to me and said you are going to be Robbin Willams personal assistant. Kelly (George Carlin’s daughter) was in the front seat passenger seat and Robin was behind me with his wife. The other comedians were in the other rows. It was almost sunset and we were driving up a two lane road with one lane for both directions and suddenly this woman decided to walk in front of me. I was watching her and as we got closer and she acted like she was just going to wait then I’m like 15 feet away from her and she starts walking across the street. I slammed on the breaks and honked the horn. I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop in time so I swerved into the other lane and avoided hitting her. Everyone was shaken up and Robing came over and put his hand on my shoulder and asked if I was ok. I was like yeah yeah yeah. Happy Pride Month plus 1 and/or Fourth of July minus 3. I do hope before Pride Month 2025 you get to watch and react to Red, White & Royal Blue. The Birdcage is based on a 1978 French movie based on a 1973 play, La Cage aux Folles. (The movie with English subtitles is also great.) Both play and movie are real pioneering since they were done so soon after the 1969 Stonewall riots which started the gay movement. Other media was still "pearl-clutching" over just the open existence of homosexual characters themselves. There was the 1970 landmark Boys In The Band, the first time a bunch of gay men were seen interacting with each other but frankly a very bitchy way. (Even just hearing about the movie kept me in the closet for a few more years as I thought therefore ALL gays were like that and I would never want to meet such people.) ---- Most viewers get upset with Val's asking his father to pretend to be straight. His gf is 17 so I guess her parents would need to approve the marriage, hence they can't find out about Val's parents. But also, this is absolutely vital so that we have the story. ---- There is a clip from years ago when Trump was hanging out with Rudy Giuliani, who was in full drag, and Trump pretended to be hitting on Rudy.

I think part of what you're picking up on in terms of what era the film is portraying is based on the fact that the script and production design are very similar to the original 1978 film. So while some things were changed and/and added to purposely convey a contemporary setting (mainly its South Beach, Miami setting), the film does sometimes come off as slightly skewed in terms of portraying a late 90s time period.

I love this movie so much my homophobic father came over while I was watching it.
