They didn't once mention the safari. It's dirt cheap transportation, $1 or $2 and it takes you around the south part of the island and you can hit at least 4 beaches, all of downtown, Havenight and Crown Bay, which are all popular spots. Take it from an expert, not a tourist!

We lived in Yacht Haven on the Noah's Ark and went to school above the West India Company dock at Antilles School. We used to go snorkling off the cliff for Biology class in 9th grade. No horrible big yachts then, but real sailboats and real sailors! from all over the world! So fun. Sometimes the crew ship captains would let us all go on the ships to explore on our way back home after school, if we promised to stick together and be good and not get in trouble.

That looks like a fun trip. I lived on Oahu for more than 20 years. What you quickly learn about living on an island is that most of the food and consumer goods are imported from somewhere else and this long distance shipping and all the different middlemen (food producer, wholesaler, factory processor, trucking company, ship or air transportation, longshoremen off-loading cargo at the port, truck delivery to the store) drive up the cost. And because rents and electric power for shops are also higher than on the mainland, this also drives up the cost of food and consumer goods. We quickly learned that if the food was not actually grown on the island or caught in the sea off shore of the island, it was going to be a lot more expensive than the same food sold on the mainland. If I was staying in the U.S.V.I., I would buy fresh locally grown produce from farmers' markets and buy fresh seafood at the docks directly from the fishermen and prepare most of my meals myself. If I wanted to buy a prepared meal, I would go to one of the food trucks that sells mainly to the locals and choose one of the lower cost local dishes. A breakfast of ripe, locally grown mangoes, papayas and bananas -- the fruit purchased at the farmer's market -- will cost less than a bowl of boxed breakfast cereal and imported cow's milk. A lunch of a hamburger sandwich (imported beef, imported wheat flour for the bun) and French fries (imported potatoes, imported cooking oil) from a restaurant will probably a lot cost more that cooked sweet potato (locally grown), grilled fish fillet (locally caught that day) and cooked greens (locally grown) from a food truck. When you are staying on an island and have a tight budget, you save money by eating what the locals eat and you stay away from tourist restaurants and do not buy imported processed foods and imported meats from local grocery stores.

My boyfriend and I spun out on that NW ridge highway which was only gravel then in 1962, no houses then, just cactus. and we were 15! My leg was badly burned on the exhaust and that was the end of going anywhere for a few days! Biggest blister you have ever seen, but all the surface nerves were burned, so no pain at all! So lucky!

The USVI are great! It was enjoyable to see and hear about them. At 04:06 the young fellow was eating while his wife was talking to him. I thought crunching on the apple was so rude of him (maybe he was upset about something); aside from that, he seemed like a nice guy. Overall, the video gave me a good feel for the islands. And, yes, food is expensive on St. Thomas! Indeed, those yachts are so amazing and same goes for the views-spectacular! Would love to move there.

Maybe you can dispel a myth.... St Thomas and St. Croix are both tourist locations but St John's is a residential Island. We were told you could only go there if you lived on the Island or had business on the Island. Suggestion: ware tennis shoes or carry them in case you have to walk.
@tishav39893 жыл бұрын
St. John is also considered a tourist location. Just like the other islands, people do live there as well. People (locals as well as tourists) travel between the islands daily on "local transportation" what we call ferries; or they use the barge if they choose to use their personal vehicles or a rental to get around. So, to answer your question, St. John is just like St. Thomas or St. Croix. However, things are even more expensive there.... St. John is not a "private island." I'm local... Myth dispelled.

I grew up here 😊 I love your videos btw 😊 some perspective if you think it’s expensive imagine the people who live and work there. The taxi guy probably also acted like that because the directions on island are something along the lines of “go over here by the blue house make a left then go up the hill and stop by the mango tree” 😂 sometimes when tourists ask to be taken somewhere they really have no idea where they’re going & address are questionable on island. As you can see the older folks don’t care to use a GPS and but overall great video 😊
