Thanks for explaining how the camshaft needs to be situated when setting the time. This is the first video I saw that actually explained it.

GREAT vid, very clear. Thank you! I had an issue reassembling as took off the head without taking engine out of the frame. Not understanding how the timing chain tensioner worked (its got a ratchet on it which holds tension on with 86 quadrunners), I pulled the pocketed bolt and spring out of the tensioner thinking that would loosen it off. Of course trying to reassemble it was a nightmare as the timing chain was under tension, and there is no mention of removing the tensioner watching multiple vids and a few hours of struggling. Its my own ignorance but thought I would put this out there in case someone is as dumb as I am! Take the camchain tensioner off, 2x 5mm hex bolts and you will have smoother sailing!

Did you have a second c ring that was smaller working kinda like a thruster towards the back of the cam? I lost mine and I can’t find it online anywhere. Was wondering if it was crucial.

I did everything exactly as showed and now my machine won’t fire at all 🤯

Not sure where you went wrong. Timing really has nothing to do with firing as such; but determines when the cdi will allow the spark plug to fire. It's a simple setup with the pick-up coil being excited by a tiny magnet on the flywheel. This is positioned so as to send this signal so many degrees before top-dead-center (TDC) to the cdi to open the path for electricity to be sent to the spark-plug. Getting the timing right is mainly for the cam gear and valves to be in the correct position in relation to the flywheel when the firing occurs. Check the gap between the magnet on the flywheel and your pickup coil. If the gap is too large then the cdi will not receive a signal to allow it to fire the plug. Only thing I can think of right now.
