I have always been advised to set the ignition timing of My VW Beetle to 28-30 degs BTDC reving the engine to 3000rpm as it is the best way to set timing when using electronic ignition. When the car idles at 900rpm the timing mark sits between 5-7 degs BTDC. I notice with your presentations you set your timing on idle only to achieve 10 degs BTDC . My dizzy is Bosch 009 without Vac Advance. Can you advise if my method is okay or do you think setting up on idle is okay for My Bug. Regards Joe.

The reason we set 009's at total adance is because many of them are very poor quality. So lets say you have set yours at 28/30deg total. if it falls to 5/7 at idle it advances 28-5 (or 7 -30) 23 degrees. if you set this up at 10 idle then at total it will be 33 (10=23) Ideally you would like 10/12 idle and 28/30 total from a 009, but you need one with only 18ish degs of advance to get that, so you are stuck with what you have, because its advancing from a low 5/7deg at idle and 009 tend to have a slow advance in the lower revs I would guess you have a flat spot when moving away.

So if you only have one mark to line up and its 6btdc. should you set the sp8000 at 0 and then line that mark up?

Tony, how does this light work with timing marks located at the bottom of the timing cover, such as MGB 1969/70?

I almost jumped out my seat when he clamped down the distributor!! Turn off the engine first if you have no fan shroud like him and I!
