Following the procedure from the Haynes manual, I replace the timing belt and water pump on my MK5 Ford Transit. This is a fairly straight forward procedure that can be done at home to save some money and allow you to assess the condition of your engine. The torque specifications vary by engine so I have left these out, but I believe they are available online or from the Haynes manual.
Timing belt kit (dayco): £65
Waterpump (circoli): £27
Serpentine belt (continetal): £10
Power steering pump belt (dayco): £8
5l concentrated OAT coolant (halfords own brand): £20
Total: £130
Average quote from garages to do the work: £500 - £850 (Ford)
SAVING £370-720!
Haynes manual says the timing belt should be replaced every 4 years or 40,000 miles whichever comes first.
Ford states that, once the timing belt has been removed, it MUST be discarded, and a new one fitted, even if the belt is just being removed for access. Re-tensioning a used belt may result in early failure, with the risk of serious engine damage.
I do not accept responsibility for damage to your engine, tinker at your own risk!
Please don't forget to like & subscribe, thanks.

Great videos mate, thank you for putting them out there. I have an old 1996 Mk5 smiley face Autosleeper campervan that I have only had for 2 years. I have spent a lot of that time thinking why did I buy it. Especially when I keep finding rust. But I have come to love the old girl now and your videos are inspiring me to stick with it and get stuck in. So thanks again and maybe I will have a go at the cam belt.

Cheers mate, and no problem at all. Thanks for watching. I know what you mean though, I had instant buyers remorse when I got mine and overpaid so had no choice but to persevere with it. I’m glad that I did as I love it now and it’s taught me a lot about mechanics and sorting rust etc. What works well and what does not 😂 it’s not a bad job doing the cam belt on these 👍🏼 Take care bud

Best thing to do is put it on ramps and axle stands on level ground, chisel/scrap/grind/wire brush (drill mounted) all the rust off everything from bow to stern, weld anything than needs welding, and buy 5L of zinc oxide/Bonda primer, and brush it on 3-4 coats. by the time you finish one coat, you can start the next at the beginning. then spray it with something impervious to water, and maybe waxoyl the whole lot (not the brakes or engine!)

In addition to my first comment on here I have reviewed this great informative video again................Not only is it well presented it has inspired me and given me confidence to do this myself. Just to add a cautious note it is very important to do the setting up of the timing. Correctly...........otherwise you risk mechanical contact with valves and pistons which can bend valve stems etc. Once again Thank You for this gem of information.

Excellent video, very clear and concise, well done, I love watching someone else do what I myself have had the pleasure to hve done if just to see how they approach the job. Only slight point I would make is if the Crank Pulley is glued on a Rubber Mount, I would definitely change it at the same time as you do the Other Belts. When the Crank Pulley Starts to fail it sounds like a big end knocking and a very scary sound indeed, especially if you are the owner As to tackling this job, overall I would say it was a DIY Task rated as an 8 out of 10 but only if you have the necessary tools, it took me and my 14stone together with a length of scaffold pole all I could do to shift the PULLEY Retaining Bolt.. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK Mr Spence Eng

Just back from Devon in our trusty camper- had a massive breakdown when 'something!' got into the timing cover and ended up getting between the crank sprocket and timing belt making it skip who knows how many teeth! Impossible to diagnose at the roadside but it locked up the engine, thought it was the end of the van. Luckily we were just doing a slow reverse into a parking spot so didn't trash any valves. I can confirm the garage price for timing belt change😢😢😢😢, good to see what's involved- I was led to believe you needed special tools to pin the pulleys who knew drill bits would do.
@TurnersWorkshop97

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I wonder what managed to slip behind the cover!? These engines are pretty bulletproof anyway. Even when the belt fails most likely will only bend the push rods 😂 yeah it’s pretty straightforward no special tools required. Daylight robbery from some places! Have you managed to get your camper back up and running?

I bought a van just like yours with only 160000km on it for $2500. Problem is check engine light and running on limp home mode. So I thought do the timing belt and check the timing at the same time. Your video was a great help. I discovered a brand new water pump in there and brand new belts and all is in perfect time. So i just buttoned it all up, and now I look at the injection pump I guess. Anyway thanks heaps for your video, it made life a lot easier.

@@TurnersWorkshop97 For anyone interested: I went to 5 mechanics of which none could read the ECU. I also tried 2 different OBD scanners from the shop, but they were also useless. Also recording a video and seized timing belt cover bolts take time to remove! I would suggest soaking the bolts in penetrating oil the night before and give yourself a full day to do it. @TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Angela, first of all thanks for watching my videos 😊 I would check that it’s the correct belt for the engine, if you have the manual it should be in there. You can check the following: belt tension, the route the belt takes around the pulleys, are there any idle pulleys that may cause the belt to go loose. Check the pulleys for bearing play. Check the pulleys are aligned by putting a straight edge across them.

@@TurnersWorkshop97 Thanks for info, afraid way above my station ha ha. Hope you don’t mind but need advice,my 92 transit has 2 battery’s under the bonnet ( they are linked ) was told 1 was engine battery and the other was leisure and back up. I have just fitted a solar panal and connected it to what I believe is main engine battery ( pos/ neg ) should I have one wire to positive, and the other wire onto the negative of the other battery. Or does it matter as they are linked anyway. Keep your videos coming as they are great and helpful to a novice like me and also knowing I have similar aged transit like yours. No worries! I would say that you have 2 batteries under the bonnet connected together in parallel to improve engine starting. Personally I like to keep starter battery and leisure battery’s separate so there’s no chance of draining the starter battery while camping. Depending on how large the solar panel is you should run through a suitable solar charge controller. It shouldn’t matter too much but I believe it’s wired like you say so that the battery bank charges evenly across the bank. Thanks mate, happy to help if I can 👍🏼 all the best with it 😁

Hello, can you explain to me how to bleed the air from the cooling circuit after draining and when filling.
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 2 жыл бұрын
Hello, fill your coolant up to the max level on the header tank. Run the engine for 10- 20+ mins with the header tank cap off monitoring the level and topping up as required. The water pump will push most of the air out of the system. Once you think all of the air is out refit cap and take it for a short drive to dislodge any trapped air. Check level again and you should be good 👍🏼 hope this makes sense

I have a question about the ventilator hub and its bearing shaft assembly. It is not easy to put them together, it is very tight. Tried to use hydraulic press and also used hammer on gently way.. It seems the hub material is a kind of composit and not just a simple casting. After introducing some heat this part started releasing some drops (of oil or something). Finally this hub diameter became larger and remaining in that dimension. Now, this hub is slipping when put on the shaft. What could be the proper method to put this hub to the shaft?

I think they are tapered roller bearings, the bearings and races go in the hub and then it should slide onto the shaft. The hub is then secured by a castle nut and split pin. Tighten the nut all the way to seat the bearings then back it off slightly so there is a very small amount of play, then fit the split pin. Have a look at Land Rover wheel bearing replacement, I think they are similar 👍🏼

Serpentine belt snapped on my ldv convoy at weekend and broke off an alternator bolt, and mustve hit the timing belt causing it to slip . Was running great,now black smoke,gutless and much louder. Not good. Hopefully cambelt change,re time is all it will need.

That’s a nightmare, don’t you have the timing belt cover on? Hopefully retiming it should sort it out sounds like it’s slipped a few teeth on the pump. Hope you manage to get it sorted! Let us know 👍

@@TurnersWorkshop97 yeah timing covers on but a 2inch piece missing at the bottom showing about the width of the belt. It may have hit that or somehow caused the tensioner to fail. If it can happen, it will. Cheers anyway

Hi Rigsby, Thank you so much 😊 I’m pretty sure they don’t have catalytic converters. Nice mate! Very low mileage. Next video I will be removing the high pressure fuel lines on the injectors so that’s half way there. It’s possible that I will be removing the injectors at some point to get them reconditioned or need to source some good ones first. Thanks for watching. All the best

No worries! You can either fit a turbo lump or get all the bits off a turbo engine and fit to the DI engine. This is something I may look into if I still need some extra oomph to get up the hills 😂

Any advice on how to fix a problem I’ve encountered? I’ve followed the annual service vid without a hitch (thank you) but on changing the cam belt I’ve run in to trouble. When tightening the tensioner roller bolt to torque I was nowhere near the click when the bolt just ran loose. I took it out and it’s stripped the thread in the block. Help!
@TurnersWorkshop97
@TurnersWorkshop97 Жыл бұрын
No problem mate, I would get a helicoil kit. Carefully drill out the hole, retap the hole to take the correct size insert. I would put a small amount of thread locker on the helicoil before inserting. They can be put in dry but my personal preference would be to use some thread locker. That will give you a nice strong bolt hole

Fill up to max level on header tank, run engine with cap off until all air has escaped, takes a little while 10 mins or so. Top it back up and you’re good to go. Just give it a little check after you’ve taken it for a drive to make sure you got all the air out.
