Yes I watched it, it seems that in the xc90 was dry white smoke, in the case of my s80 t6 if I rev the car you can actually see like to much moisture in the floor almost like an spray of water, and the white smoke is not as pronounce as in the xc90.

Once you have the camshafts properly aligned in the back and the cam sprockets aligned in front to the marks on the timing belt cover and you have the camshaft cover secured and the timing belt on, it is a good idea to turn the crank shaft clockwise several times to get the belt to turn the cam shafts for several rotations to make sure that your timing is good. If it is off, eventually the valves and pistons will be out of time, and you won't be able to make complete revolutions of the cam, pistons, and valves. If it all turns smoothly, you know you are good to go. Also, if you have had the engine apart and have reassembled it with assembly lube and have topped off you engine oil and coolant, pull the fuel pump relay and crank the engine over several times to get oil pumped up to the top of the engine before replacing the fuel pump relay and starting up the engine. This "dry" turning over will help lube everything before you start the engine and it starts generating friction and heat.

I have a 97 Volvo 960 2.9l 24 valve. I placed new water pump. Timing tensioner. And few other things for the timing. I placed the crank on the marking. I have set the cams on right. When I put the cover on. But didn't bolt it down way to tight. The left can on turn at all. But the right cam would turn without any problems. I would like to ask u a question. Why the left cam won't turn freely? Sorry for asking. I watched ur videos. And I use ur advice.

Did you use assembly lube on the cams when you installed them?
@snakeeyez4028
@snakeeyez4028 5 жыл бұрын
@@RobertDIY yes sir I did. I have turn the crank clockwise until I got it on the marking. I used the lube where the cams set in place. When I placed the cams on. I have set them the way they supposed to go on. Due to its a rear wheel drive. Where I can't see at the back for the correct timing on cams. So I had to go by the marking on the front of the cams. The driver side is turning freely. Passenger side doesn't. The question is do I need to keep turning the crank? Because there were few times I did turn the crank some more. When it wasn't time with the oil pump. The passenger side did turn.

HI Robert, I have a question. I am in the process of doing a head gasket change. My exhaust cam's market was 180 degrees out of alignment when I was disassembling the motor. I was wondering, is it possible to run the car with the cam 180 degrees opposite the mark on the timing cover? The car's power was very poor, but I attributed that to the head gasket and carbon build up on the valves from valve stem seal leaks. Do you think the previous owner may had the cams flopped, or maybe the cam sprockets are on wrong? what's you guess? Thanks for any advice.
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
vaz Fx I don't think the car will run with the timing off 180 degrees on either of the cams. Check the timing on the back of the motor. It is possible for the cam sprocket to be off but I have no idea what kind of car you have so proceed with caution. Make sure you roll the motor over by hand a couple of times before you start it.

Hi i just bought a set of NA cams to put into my 97 850 t5, would it be possible for you to make a tutorial on how to do a proper instal of these cams? Steps, tools, how to set the timing? Much appreciated my friend :)
@RobertDIY

John Gregory The video of removing the head and installing it will show you how to install the cams. Just remove the stuff off of the back of the motor (cap, rotor, cam sensor, etc). Then remove the cam cover. Swap the cams out, then time the intake cam 4 degrees advance (you will need a compass or cam tool for that), advance is top towards the front of the car. - Volvo S70 T5 restoration day 7, head cleaning, cam swap, valves removed, etc. - Auto Repair Series Yes I can make a video to swapping the cams but it won't be any time soon unless someone request my help in doing so.

Hi Robert and thanks for informative video which scared me a little bit. I have Volvo 2004 V40 and the timing belt got contaminated with oil and got loose and both cams jumped on certain position. I took the chance and replaced the timing belt with it's kits after watching your other video and thank God no interference engine and no bent valves. Well the car besides blowing white smoke from the exhaust also leaks drops of what I think it's coolant even after the car has been running for a whole and the car is warm, I have look onto the oil cap and oil stick and doesn't seem to be any coolant on oil, (no creaminess of oil or white residue) so I am totally confused here, so the only thing I was thinking now that it could be but not sure, is if the turbos are water cool then maybe one of both it's leaking and sending some of that leak straight out trough the exhaust pipe?
@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
Oz Ramuco The turbo's are actually part of the exhaust. They use exhaust air to drive the turbines. If one or both are leaking oil, you will get the light grey smoke out the exhaust. Pull the inlets of the turbos and see if either has any shaft play.

Hello Robert, ok here I am again. So car started right on 👍 the problem is that the whole reason I did all this is because there was white smoke and coolant drops coming from tail pipe, so I though that the was a head gasket problem, but after all this fun work the car is still blowing a bit of coolant from tail pipe and coolant keeps on leaking from behind the engine on the driver side, I can't seem to be able to locate exactly from where it's this coolant leaking from, I have scratched my head for a while so here I am asking for advice again, can you please help Thank you again.

Oz Ramuco The turbo should have coolant lines. Also, are you sure the white smoke is coolant? Could be a turbo taking a dump, usually more grey smoke. - 2003 Volvo XC90 T6 AWD Smokes and has P0234 Code. Bad turbo...

@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
Condensation ALWAYS leaks out of exhaust. When the car is cold, white smoke usually comes out of the exhaust. What else was going on with the car? Was it overheating? Was it loosing power? Was it misfiring? Was it mixing coolant in the oil? Was it loosing coolant other than the coolant hose you have leaking behind the motor? Replacing a head gasket is to much work to do on guess work or speculation.

Hello Robert, question. the car keeps blowing white smoke from exhaust and droplets of coolant as well. so I got the Bock tester to see if the liquid would turn green or yellow but it remain blue, which I think means that there is no coolant going into the combustion chamber or that the head gasket it's ok? can you help please.... I am confused. trying to determine what its causing this darn coolant vapor coming from tail pipes

@RobertDIY
@RobertDIY 10 жыл бұрын
No you do not have to remove the motor to take the head off of it. I have not done a video for the S80 so I am not sure of each step. As with any car, you pull the stuff from off the top of the motor, then disconnect the stuff attached to the sides, front and back, then do what you need to do to access the head bolts. If you are replacing the head gasket, you've obviously removed the cam cover and have liberated the cam shafts with their toothed pulleys. The seals can actually be slipped off (and on) down the length of the camshaft, past the cams. Just make sure you replace them in the original orientation Be careful removing the cams from their beds, particularly if they have VVT units. The ends near the pulleys fit very tightly into their bearings and can be damaged, and the pulleys overhang protrusions from the engine. Take your time and wiggle them slowly upwards and towards the pulley. Don't tilt them until they are free!

Oz Ramuco You really need to set the crank on it's mark before you install the cams in the head. So, if you already installed the cam cover, you may have to remove it if the crank is NOT on the marks. Matter of fact, if the crank is NOT on the mark, and you installed the cam cover, you may have damaged some valves. Did you use my video to remove and install the head?
