Your saw videos are by far the best and they are so "kind." By that I mean clear information that does not treat us as idiots, and at the same time you give us complex detail. I have spent 60 years on small block Chevys, learning something new on every engine. I am living that through you on 2 stroke saws, but not like I am in a lab--your lessons are clear and relaxed. Thanks, "Mike"

I bet 20 thou on that saw would be a "stout" starting saw. Heck I made a paper gasket for an 026 stihl, and it ended up at .019 and it would bite ya if you werent paying attention to what youre doing. Tinman.. thanks for making these videos. I'm comfortable with wrenching on saws. Been doing small engine work a long time. But I have yet to grind on one.. I started watching videos 7 or 8 months ago and I have learned a LOT from you. I appreciate your willingness to share and to teach. I have a couple Husky 51s to play with. Don't wanna touch my 'spensive saws. Yet. But between you, Charlie Brisco, the OPE forums, and a few other guys on youtube i'm just about comfortable enough to take that plunge. Thank you.

Tinman, you should talk to Ryan at WCSS and see if you can do a video on Meteor, Hyway Tinanikel, Hyway Nikasil, NW and OEM cylinders for like a 372xp. Show the casting and squish band differences and the timing differences on like a regular 50mm cylinder. I bet that video would get tons of views, I know I'd love to see it. Keep up the great work brotha.

Farmertec and Highway cylinders are not suitable for longevity imho. In order of preference: 1) OEM cylinder and OEM piston , best combo but most expensive- 2) OEM cylinder and Meteor piston , damn close to OEM - 3) Meteor cylinder and piston kit - I’ve used this combo on a few saws (266 to a 272 and a 268 to a 272) and the saws perform well and the cost is less than 1/2 OEM ….. Just my 2c , your mileage may vary

Wonderful information, great explanation and comparisons between the different cylinder makes. Interesting about the deck height something I've never really thought of. It would be interesting to do the timing numbers on four or five of the same cylinders to see if there is consistency within the manufacturer or to emphasize the importance of identifying the timing numbers before modifying the cylinder. 288xp is a bit to much saw for what I cut. 55, 61 266, 268 and 272's are all in my world. As always best saw content video on youtube. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙

Would be interesting for you to do a video on the theory on short blow down.
@fabzacres-blackcat Жыл бұрын
Different blowdown numbers affect peak power at different Rpms … some saws are engineered for short blowdown (15-17) whilst others are designed for longer blowdown (23-26 or more) … Not really any theory to it imho , been proven out a loooooong time ago. With these chainsaw motors you really cannot make “one size fits all” statements and expect to be taken seriously as the design characteristics vary , also the shape of the exhaust port matters. I’ve been in a few of these “short blowdown” aficionados saws and let me tell ya for a fact : It was reversion - city with the exhaust leaving a trail into the transfers. This tells me there was insufficient blowdown at peak rpm. The cylinder tells a story
@charlespeacock8360 Жыл бұрын
@@fabzacres-blackcat I'd be interested to know how much or little blowdown the newer strato saws prefer and how to achieve maximum fuel/exhaust flow without ruining the scavenge.

do modifications to the cylinder, opening transfers and the exhaust port allow the saw to go past the recommended top rpm without damage?

Glad you made this video. I end up getting a few saws a year that come through on a trade for things and end up rebuilding but I don’t port. Usually just get the kits from Ryan but it’s interesting to see the various tolerances etc. Have you found it typically works better to keep the piston and cylinder mfr the same if not porting? Just wondering if they are designed to work with their own components based on the variably between the cylinders.
@tinmanssaws Жыл бұрын
Yeah I'd say matched piston and cylinders are a safe bet if you aren't porting.

What I don’t get is why there are no standard timing numbers for each cylinder and piston combo based upon sets of objective situations like: no porting, or pop up piston etc.? If I’m just installing either OEM top end then why is timing even an issue if I’m not porting or using pop up? I get the squish issue. I think timing becomes a concern for people who port cylinders. But for most tinkerers like me, I don’t think I need my wheel or my digital angle gauge. Am I wrong? I know about TDC and BDC. Aren’t the crank, clutch, flywheel, needle bearing, wrist pin, piston and jug all pre-set in terms of timing assuming one doesn’t do anything crazy like advancing timing? I see dozens of guys taking timing measurements but almost never do they reveal to what end.l that is why even reasonably intelligent people are confused by it. After all, we’re not talking about souped up racing V-8’s. Help.
