I don’t have a lathe -But when my base gadget delete left me with 15 thou squish, I made a “hippie lathe”sanding drum from an old piston with some sandpaper glued to the face of it. I was able to raise the dome up another .005 I also lightly sanded a small chamfer on the edge of the piston dome (just in case there was any high spots along the edges close to the cylinder wall I couldn’t get to. Prob gonna get lit up for this ghetto squish attempt, but hey.. Saws been running great lol

Cannot wait until you grab a junk cylinder and start grinding with the Foredom setup... it’s a totally different world when you have massive torque and a gas pedal to control your speed while your hands are free to do the work... and with all the little attachments you can do they are just awesome tools... I cut a slit into an aluminum landscaping spike to slide my emery strips into to polish up my ports... a big nail or a big cotter pin with the eye hammered flat works great too. I found little diamond disks and you can outline a port or transfer to groove the nickasil and create your finish line so when you are running a burr up to the edges you can keep a nice line. I need to make those little cheats since the smack down as the nerve issues make my hands trimmer... LMFFAO! I’ve learned to use it... I’ve got a built in orbital sander mode on the shakey days! 😂😂👍👍. I freakin love that piston! Those are an awesome freaking slug to work up... and it’s not only gonna rip but he can actually work with it and it’s going to run great for a long time too! Beautiful piston’s! Hoping there’s a Buckin festival in the fall and that you and Harvey are there! Keep on Truckin !!!

I’m just hoping that you have the old camera rolling when you break into your Foredom.. the foot pedal is why I love them. An air die grinder is loud and then you can the compressor kicking on and it’s just less peaceful and relaxed.... grinding on a cylinder should be a very relaxed and calming atmosphere...😂👍. I used a diamond drill to make the pilot holes for my buddies broken Ford pickup head bolts and my Foredom... I really like shaping stones and making jewelry too... copper then silver.. you cover up your little braze joint with the electroplating technique that’s just the reverse of removing rust... the battery charger and a positive charge and a ground.. you have to make your wife something for her birthday or Christmas... pm me your postage info and I’ll mail you a couple different pieces of stones to mess around with...? I’m really liking the nickel plating over copper... I’ve got to make up a nickel solution to try it... I’ve been wondering about fixing cylinder’s... if I could grind out the scratch or damage to the cylinder lining and then puddle up the nickel solution over the cut in the lining??? I’d like to be able to line a cylinder!

Hey TinMan, It’s called a dial test indicator, it measures in .0001” (ten thousandths)which can easily be split in half and may even have those 1/2 lines for just that. A regular dial indicator measures in .001” (thousandths) . And yes the old school machinists call it “the last word” the reason for this is....in the old days a sheet of paper was approx. 003” thick, so the last word would be measuring/dividing that sheet into 30 equal pieces ....well, this is what a guy I did my apprenticeship under who was a tool and die maker told me.

Man.... I hope I'm doing that well at 71 years old! It seems to me that dwell can affect difference in duration between intake and exhaust in a machine job. The only way they could be the same is if the relationship between TDC to exhaust opening and BDC to intake opening is exactly the same. When you machine the base everything slides down. Depending how your cylinder relates to the stroke, it seems like you can move closer to or further away from them being equal.... not that equal duration matters. A super smart dude told me one time that it doesn't. ;)

Noticed you are using a single ring piston just wondering what your opinion for performance between single vs 2 ring pistons. I think with my semi pro s series partner has the single but the pro p series i believe run double rings i herd with the single good for less drag but i would think the the double would help with less blow by and help keep the piston in line and less chance of the skirt slapping the cylinder wall but. But not sure myself just new to this so kind of guessing from my own thoughts lol.

I have a question about checking squish, would it not be more accurate to check it on the flywheel and clutch side so you are over the wrist pin. I wonder if the piston being able to rock side to side by checking it at the intake and exhaust would make enough difference to be a problem when things get hot and expand. Love your channel you have influenced me enough to try a build of my own. I have been a saw rebuilder for years, just never been brave enough to modify a saw. I was given a 359 husqvarna for some work on a trimmer so it will be my lab rat. I own several vintage saws in various states, most are on the to be repaired shelf. One a 285 husky is one I’m personally looking forward to hopefully hear run again.

Tinman: can’t you get sufficient squish simply sanding the cylinder bottom to reduce a couple thousandths? Would you need a pop up then? I’ve used wet sandpaper on glass with honing oil on 1911 pistol parts which are also very tight spec wise.

@82f100swb

It really depends on the year of the saws you are comparing. The last SE and the first XP are almost identical outside of the stickers. The bigger carb came along mid 84. There are at least 8 different cylinders. I have most of them and need to put the wheel on some later ones. Very large difference between an 83 saw and an 85 though.

Hey brother I got a question . Do you know whether or not I can put a 266cylinder and piston on my 262xp? The exhaust side is scored anyway I was gonna try and sand the cylinder cause it's own and put an aftermarket piston and rings in it but if I can put a 266 p/c on instead that'd be wicked, probably have to change the carb to I expect
@tinmanssaws
@tinmanssaws 3 жыл бұрын
262xp is on a smaller chassis. That chassis has the 254, 257 and 262 is the largest saw on the chassis. The 266 is on a larger chassis so i don't think that swap is possible.

So cutting the squish makes the intake open sooner. Then cutting the piston skirt would make intake open even sooner? Is this specific to this saw? I'm just starting out learning to do some porting and have been following your videos. I'd want to be careful with intake timing lowering squish aswell as trimming piston skirt correct? Starting to get mind boggled lol 🙃
@tinmanssaws
@tinmanssaws 3 жыл бұрын
Yes cutting the base tightens the squish as well as lowers the cylinder and all the ports. With the ports lower the intake opens sooner as well as close later. The exhaust port will open later as well as close sooner.. If you cut the skirt shorter the intake will open sooner and close later also. Hope that helps
@Chainmale
@Chainmale 3 жыл бұрын
@@tinmanssaws awesome, cheers. Catching up on your videos after bit of a break from internet. I'm assuming that trimming the piston skirt wouldn't be an option to achieve timing numbers on a lot of saws, especially when lowering the cylinder. Great videos, cheers for the reply
