@Out Loud Studios It is also my vote that you search out and hear the original studio recording first. Though this is an "official" video, it is NOT the soundtrack from the album. It is a live performance and it sounds different than the album cut, which makes the point. It's mostly how the intro is done and the production sound difference of not being in the studio. There is absolutely nothing wrong with live cuts but if you want your journey to be similar to ours then you should try to maintain a little bit of chronological order and live cuts are always after the studio cut. There a few songs that got famous as live cuts but they are rare. As far as folks saying 'dude! you gotta check out the live version' well, ok, fine .... AFTER the studio version. Hey man let me tell you that it was really a pleasure seeing you react so positively to the best band the world's ever known. I've been in a bit of a rush funk since January, because whenever I watch it hits me that I'll never get to see them again live. They were my first real concert back on the hold your fire tour, and I've been to all but two since then. I had to miss their very last tour and I'm pretty sure I'm going to regret that for a long time. But seeing someone younger and totally stoked on them, that can recognize their brilliance is a bright spark in a world without the Trinity in place. Thanks!

Alex is a great guitarist. He is better than 99% of other players. He gets the short end of the stick only because he's playing in Rush, where Geddy and Neil are so exceptional. He needs to be judged on his own merits, not on the fact that he's not Geddy or Neil (No one is).

He's every bit as good as those guys. He just never chose to be a flashy guitar shredder. Alex always played for the mood and texture of the song. He could switch from sweet melodic playing to full-on, atonal noise bombing in the blink of any eye.

Between the cover which is hands down the greatest cover ever made for a rock album if anyone gets it without having it explained to them then even better. I was one of the ones who didn't understand the three being in one. Which is even perfect for the concept of the three men in the group and one unit. All of them together in unison. And I even love that in most of the beginning of certain concerts they played the Three Stooges theme usually with Alex hitting the last chord of the song in one concert the curtain falls as the chord is stuck.

Whenever I see these reactions video, I ALWAYS recommend to listen to the later stuff too. Headlong Flight is one of their most intense rockers! "Clockwork Angels" is an incredible song. One of my personal favorites is "Vapor Trail". I love the melancholy in that song. "Animate", "Force Ten", "Earthshine", "How it is".... all great stuff. Oh, and "Malignant Narcissism"? Incredible! That one got nominated for a Grammy.

You said that right. To me exit stage was their pinnacle of live performances. They were in their prime. Had it banging on all eight cylinders. To me their live stuff was better than the studio. And that's what blows you away. Bcuz your thinking yeah in the studio its easy to make it sound like there are 4 or 5 guys using studio tricks. But then you hear em live and it sounds even better.! I wish some of these reaction guys would go to exit stage left and react to the true magic of rush.

This is the song that showcases Alex's talent. His best solo in my opinion. One of the few that Geddy doesn't take the spotlight away although he is prominent. Just a perfect balance. Neil kills it as usual.

@@basedbear1605 past two years I can't stop listening to The Necromancer. His guitar work is sublime on that song. From delicate to pounding to ripping to soaring. If you close your eyes you can see the battle right before you. And then that Return Of The Prince outro solo - what a thing of beauty. I tried playing it, it seemed accessible at first, but his phrasing is beyond me even with (seemingly) accurate tab right in front of me. I Went to see Pat Travers in the little, dramatic, Warnors theater in Fresno CA. He was opening for RUSH, who I was only vaguely aware of in 78. "Magicians" is right. On any given Rush song, Geddy and/or Alex are playing synth or bass pedals. Look at 3:11 and you can see Alex playing bass pedals and does so throughout the song. It's hardly noticeable. In an interview, even Neil Peart said he has a pad that's wired into Geddy's synth because at some point every human has his limits.

I never saw a bad Rush concert; I was out of the country when they were doing their "Clockwork Angels" tour (tried to get tickets for Cologne or Berlin...heck, I even would've gone to Amsterdam! No dice, no tickets!), so I was extremely sad when I learned that this was their last tour. I figured it probably was, but that doesn't mean I wasn't disappointed. I was really saddened to hear of Neil's death on January 7, 2020. Amazing man, amazing lyrics, for an amazing (and my all-time favorite) group. All of the members were consummate professionals, driven by a spirit of excellence. There won't ever be (my wife says can't, and she be right) another band like Rush.

I was privileged to see Rush 16/17 times since the first tour they did in the UK. Since then, they have been my all-time favourite band. I remember reading an interview many years ago when a journalist asked them how they manage to play such true renditions of their songs. The response was that they never wanted to short-change their fans. They made their money out of albums and tours - not singles, fashion and radio promotion. Their fans are everything to them and, understandably, they have one of the largest and most loyal sets of fans. Rush, IMO, is a band where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts - which is incredible as, individually, they are all at the top of their profession. Keep on being amazed.

Alex Lifeson was an underrated guitarist and was not given the recognition he so well deserves. Another Canadian trio that was also a powerhouse was "Triumph" they stared two years later in 1976. Rikk Emmett spoke of Alex Lifeson and praised him for his mastery. Any song from Rush will always blow you away, just like any song from Triumph will also blow you away. Another Canadian rock band of 5 members is April Wine Miles Goodwin was also a master.

Got to see the last tour with my son who is a huge rush fan. There were families with 3 generations. My first live show was Moving Pictures then Subdivisions tour. That groove is based upon Powerhouse, by the Raymond Scott Quintette in 1937. You may remember it as the music from Warner Bros. cartoons when they had an assembly line or factory type scene.

That little groove you commented in is their little homage to Raymond Scott and a song he composed called Powerhouse. If you have ever watched Merry Melodies and Looney Tunes,you will recognize the tune. He didn’t ask for it,but the band paid him royalties for that little bit. Their shows were full of nods to comedic stuff,especially 3 Stooges stuff. They would open with the 3 Stooges theme on some tours.

When I was in high school, I had friends who were drummers and they would boast all the time about learning to play new songs from Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, etc., but the inevitable question that always came up was 'Yes, but can you play La Villa Strangiato?', that told me everything about who actual drummers thought was the greatest. RIP Neil.

the solo that Lifeson plays starting at around 6:00 is one of my favorite solos ever. It makes my hair stand on end. I'ts magical. Perhaps one of the best I've ever heard. And I also love the way that the bass and drums grow and swell along with Alex's solo. And the short section after his solo ends... all amazing. What I don't like is the incongrous little bit they do afterward this. I'm not sure what to call it. Maybe it's some kind of 'turn-around' or something. But it grates on me. They bring it back again once or twice later in the song... Rush is absolutely brilliant. This song is a tour de force. I just wish that one motif was omitted.

Saw them many times over the years but i remember thinking during their last Toronto Show in 2015 how they remained professional and brilliant to the end. I am so glad i took my 10 year old son to that concert. Not many kids will be able to say they saw the best band in the world for their first gig.

I think their performance of La Villa on the Rush In Rio dvd is as perfect as a live performance gets. My eyes actually tear up when Alex finishes that solo. Check out the Rush in Rio performance if you get a chance.

The 2011 version live from Cleveland is, I think the ultimate version. Geddy kicked us the bass line so hard it is scary. The into is playful and shows they don’t have any hang ups about changes and having fun on stage.

The full studio version of 2112 Is probably the greatest song what ever lived.i can’t believe musicians were were actually selling their souls to become better players before this song came out....

if you do this song again , do their pinkpop from around 1978-9.. sheer rawness with barely any keys..

rush taught me to enjoy instrumentals from bands, those were always the hidden gold from bands who dared perform them
