This phenomenon is called "impact bias". Humans suck at estimating how happy or sad a particular thing will make them, so we make the wrong decisions chasing happiness. "It was the worst thing that ever happened to me" and "it's the best thing that ever happened to me" - one of these comments is about winning lotto and one is about someone having both their legs blown off in a war, and each is not the one you think.

@mirkinza athnar: Having your legs blown off (in war say) & surviving opens you up to many other experiences that you never would have had otherwise and gives you a fuller appreciation for life than some able bodied people have. @victorsjostedt4393
@victorsjostedt4393 4 жыл бұрын
Could you elaborate a bit on what you read in that line? I thought it was about the irony of finding meaning sitting still where people are so busy try to find meaning by going places; maybe also some lighthearted admittance that Tim is spending a lot of time traveling himself and puts himself among the same crowd he makes personal judgments on in this song. Seems like Tim subtly telling us ”But hey, I’m there too lol”. I wonder if this song was inspired by Billy Joel’s ”Piano man” or if the resemblence is a coincidence?

@@victorsjostedt4393 Coincidentally enough, I took the comment as a comment on the fact that he's a traveling musician. Writing songs on the road. Secondly, I get a very prophetic, self fulfilling prophecy vibe here. Like saying, all these things are either already true, or well on their way of becoming true. Although, I understand his marriage to be in good standing, it's not uncommon to at least have these fears.
@victorsjostedt4393
@victorsjostedt4393 4 жыл бұрын
@@ArvisTatom I think there's some truth to that, especially in conjunction with other songs. On another single that will probably be on this album, "I'll Take Lonely Tonight", he seems to feel wary of the fact that he is one bad impulse away from forsaking his marriage, and of some temptations that he will experience that would lead him astray were he to act upon them. He seems to feel very sorry for sometimes regretting not acting on a bad impulse, and such feelings can indeed feel very tainted and irrational upon examination, to the degree that they damage our moral image of ourselves.

So much truth in this song... like all Tim songs. Nearly a year since I saw you live and grin every time I think of it.

OH MY GOSH, I love this so much. So So much, old school Tim Minchin wit and absurdity, combined with the newly developed surealist streak or the more current vids. Can I say, banger!
